Consider this comp of one-time All Star first basemen:

Over the past three seasons Wil Myers posted 4.0 bWAR in 393 games while Mitch Moreland posted 4.1 bWAR in 364 games.

Here are the 2020 Marcel projections for the 29-year-old Myers and the 34-year-old Moreland:

WM 479 PA, .244/.322/.444/.765, 58 R, 19 HR, 55 RBI, 24 2B, 2 3B, 13 SB, 47 BB, 143 K

MM 413 PA, .243/.320/.451/.771, 54 R, 17 HR, 61 RBI, 21 2B, 2 3B, 2 SB, 41 BB, 94 K

Of course the Red Sox would like to upgrade but that is a tall order if the Sox want to get under the luxury tax threshold.

Moreland was overpaid at $6M. Myers is set to make $22M.

Yep ... but good luck getting rid of the luxury tax implications of the $96 million remaining on David Price's contract.

FWIW for the past three seasons Wil Myers was paid $14.5 million and Mitch Moreland $18.5 million.

Can we all agree as of this morning the Boston Globe reporting Fenway Sports is now Ranked 3rd in Richest SPORTS franchises after there newest purchase .Enough of the poor John Henry BS .This guy can afford Mookie and Price without batting an eye .

No one says he can’t, but what we’ve learned is he doesn’t want to...

So?

They back loaded Myers deal, so I'm not getting your point.

The fact is Myers will be way overpaid going forward but still has the ability to earn some of it.

Price is way overpaid and might earn a good chunk of it... or not.

The trade simulator has them at about the same value, but with Myers having a much lower luxury tax cost than his actual cost, due to the back end starting in 2020, a deal might work for both teams.

Not by much though. FanGraphs had his total value for 2017-2019 at about 18 mill.

Plus that huge 3-run jack in the WS.

Rather than comparing past salary and future salary, the comparison was apples-to-apples FWIW.

Or similarly rotten (or ripe or in-between) apples based on bWAR over those three years.

To equate Moreland's contract to Myers is apples to rotten apples.

This is not about one being better than the other.

The post "Moreland was overpaid at $6M. Myers is set to make $22M" cites salaries, not contracts.

likely not going to happen but if it does what in fact does it mean? Sox lose a starting pitcher to shed payroll. Whoopty freakin deal. They follow through on staying below a certain payroll limit it might be a good thing for those wanting to attend a game. More ticket promotions coming - keep your eyes open. And by the way, as much as the non playing adult world hates this guy, what have his teammates had to say about him? That is what counts.

Bloom is a small market guy. He needs to acclimate faster than this.

Hey slappy put the bottle down and read a bit .

I just don't know why you're going apeshit about a possible trade of Price to the Jays. It's not like trading with the Yanks or the Rays.

The MLBTR piece puts an optimistic spin on a trade for Price. It says there about 7 teams interested in Ryu and suggests that the Sox will have multiple potential partners for Price, and that the Sox could expect teams to be willing to pay $20 mill * 3 of his contract.

It's the Jays. Even if David pitched 6 good innings, we'd still have a shot against the Jays pen.

We have much bigger things to be concerned about.

I really do understand what you are saying here but I'm not going to pretend that losing him does not come at a talent cost. I am so absolutely tired of all of the crap posted here about trying to keep this team below a tax limit that may or may not even exist soon. I think that much will happen and soon if it appears that this team does not appear to be an improvement over last year's team. My guess is that many fans will not buy the concept that cutting payroll in order to build for the future is the best way to go.

I recently read a blog which was Not as optimistic about value (https://blogs.fangraphs.com/david-prices-trade-value/). Twenty mil x 3 looks like much more than we can expect and to get him traded, we might well have to add a ML player who is being paid less than his current worth. Beni was mentioned. I think Bloom is looking for his best offer. I hope your concept is correct but it doesn't line up with what I am reading.

So you also are saying that basically a trade of price to cut payroll is of extreme importance to this franchise. So much so that we should even throw another talented player in just to rid this extremely wealthy franchise of of payroll excess. what is wrong with me for just not understanding this? I have heard all of the arguments as to why this is of the utmost concern too. if this is the direction that our owners decide to go in, it will cost them dearly.

If we get the equivalent of 3% more in a trade by moving within the Division, do it, esp when it's Toronto. Of course, now I wonder what the return would be.

I have to think that ultimately moving Price will be for more than just payroll -- though they won't admit it publicly. His antics have been a distraction and detriment to the franchise image, in a time when no team can afford a further diminished fanbase. Even in Boston, where profits reportedly continue to pour in, the bad PR caused by a player can negate his contributions.

The last straw for ownership and management may have been last summer, when Price called his press conference to further dis Eck, at the exact time the Sox appeared to be getting back in the race. I heard an interview with Cora, and he was not happy -- to paraphrase, "Why now?" The Sox soon dropped out of contention and Price never won another game the rest of the season.

Price isn't the first Red Sox player in desperate need of a change of scenery... Spaceman, Manny, Nomar... sometimes the scenery needs alterations, too.

My primary concern with Price is his role in that clubhouse. By all accounts, he has been a player whom his teammates respect and look up to. Whether i like him or not is of no consequence. If he is traded for no apparent gain other than a saving of money, that will have a smell to it that i will find tough to deal with. i'm just guessing that I won't be the only fan to feel this way.
