For luxury tax purposes, a trade of David Price for Wil Myers saves the Red Sox $17+ million annually for three years while the Padres would add $9.5 million annually in real dollars.

One could argue Price is worth $9.5M a year and Myers is worth -$17M a year.

Sounds like an even trade.

It does work for both sides and has been discussed in a few threads on this board.

Or maybe the Sox could deal Price to Seattle for Dee Gordon...

Piggy backing on the topic .Wouldnt price be ideal fallback for Angels ? They may even take on the contract .

Wouldn’t Bumgarner be a better fallback?

I'm hoping we don't have to contribute more than 5m per year of Price's salary. Thinking 25m sounds reasonable for a top of the rotation pitcher in today's market? But more likely we'll have to kick in 10m per year to move him along.

Lol Ken Rosenthall is a world class Yankee ass sniffer ..if he's saying no progress a deal is imminent.

You’re thinking of Buster Olney. Rosenthal is actually very good.

As much as I want something to happen, I don’t mind Bloom not leaping at first offers. In fact, it would have been stupid to deal Price before Cole signed...

He may have a slight potential to return to "top of rotation" status, but he is not there now.

Wonder how much Cole's value drops after 4 season's. Go form 31 a year to 18, for Price. Price was 29 when he signed and turned 30 for us too. Cole same thing.

Price for 3 years at 18 per looks pretty reasonably priced right about now.

Price is a big dude, but pretty skinny and lost some heat. Cole is a different beast. Not as tall (close), but thick with far more power than Price ever had. Cole is the kind of guy who it wouldn't surprise me to see throw near 100mph for the next 5-6 years. I do wonder if that opt out is gonna be used. I actually wouldn't be surprised

If he was on the Sox, you'd be shocked.

Ir's fun watching you convince yourself Cole isn't going to be an albatross.

I know listed heights and weights aren't necessarily reality, but the fact that Price is listed as 1" taller and 4 pounds lighter does mean the two are closer in size than you seem to want to admit...

Yankers can afford everyone! Those empty 1st few rows at the stadium is because the fans are wearing cloaking devices.

They'll just cut the dental plan again and start charging $350 hot for a hot dog...

Cole contract will be an albatross the last 3 or 4 years for sure, I just hope we get our money worth in the first 4-5 years

I don’t believe it unless the Sox are eating massive $$$$.

Or taking back a questionable contract.

Or, apparently, trading with the Giants, who seem to like collecting bad contracts...

I'd be surprised if he had 5 years left in that arm, especially at that velocity as a starter. Cole turns 30 next season and averaged 97.2mph on his fastball last year. Since 2000, no starting pitcher age 30 or older has averaged 97mph on his fastball for a full season. None. Jake deGrom, at ages 30 and 31, is the only SP to top 96mph. Only 4 other pitchers topped 95, although Justin Verlander and Charlie Morton both did it twice. (Paxton last year and AJ Burnett in 2007 were the others.)

The velocity will go down, possibly even next season. And when that happens, Jacko himself insists that Red Sox pitchers who lose velocity will need to take a season or two to re-invent themselves. I assume he thinks that will apply to Yankee pitchers as well.

Actually I don't...

Cole might be a different beast. I am hoping (no science behind this, just blind cheerleader hope) that Cole can be like Verlander and maintain his velocity towards the end of that deal. One can dream, right? Actually, my hope is Cole pitches lights out for 5 seasons, opts out and goes somewhere else to be paid handsomely for his twilight

Yes, but the chances of that dream coming true are roughly equal to the chances of me flapping my arms and flying to the moon.

The best chance the Yankees have is if Stanton decides to ignore his agent and opt out after this year. And, much like with Price, it's not likely to happen. Especially if the Yankees win the World Series.

I would say this was both a good day and a bad day for the Yankees and their fans...
