Personally I love it. Not just for the player but for this team's continued commitment to spend and put strong teams on the field.

Per MLBTR.

No details yet, but they will come...

Red Sox To Re-Sign Eovaldi

December 6th, 2018 at 8:53am CST • By Jeff Todd

The Red Sox have struck a deal to bring back righty Nathan Eovaldi, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (via Twitter). Terms of the agreement, which is pending a physical, have yet to be reported.

This was a match that MLBTR predicted in its listing of the top fifty MLB free agents. Frankly, that was one of the easier situations to predict, given Eovaldi’s stirring run for the World Series champs.

Both the upside and the uncertainty that come with Eovaldi’s flamethrowing right arm are well-known. Having witnessed him up close for several months, concluding with a trial by fire on the game’s biggest stage, the Boston organization was well-placed to decide whether Eovaldi is worth the risk.

That’s not to say there weren’t other pursuers. Ultimately, the Astros, Phillies, Yankees, Brewers, Braves, Angels, White Sox, Blue Jays, Giants and Padres all reportedly had some level of involvement. That wide variety of suitors no doubt drove the bidding to heights that would have been all but unimaginable at the start of the 2018 season.

Once Patrick Corbin went off the board, the sprint for Eovaldi was on. Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, however, clearly had decided that Eovaldi was a top priority. With deep pockets and the allure of a repeat title run aiding his cause, Dombrowski was able to get his target.

Agree, this works not only for this year also next too. Guy can swing into BP, if needed. Gives versatility. Just got to hope the new surgery he got works. They tried, a different procedure for him on last TJ.

Dombrowski seems to be able to get his "target" quite often.

DD is decisive if nothing else. I like that about him. He reads the market well. JD market was not there last year. He waited. This year, he knew he had to jump on Eovaldi.

I am curious of years - given the injury history, I am sure some of the haggling was around vesting options and so forth.

Signing this guy is a good move for the Red Sox. He certainly proved himself to be a quality pitcher last season as the Sox would not be WS champs without him..

Every free agent is a gamble with possible health and performance issues, but this looks to be a good signing.

84 million for 4 Starters. Good thing for Sales contract. This trend will continue until you start developing in the Minors. You will pay for Pitching. Edited by OH FOY!

Sale and porcello will be off the hook after this year so that 84 is only for this year.

I highly doubt they keep both Sale and Porcello after this year

I think they try to keep one of them.

I think they’ll be in on a top notch starter next year. They’ll let Sale walk and likely chase Bumgarner and fall back to Porcello if they can’t lock him up. I sincerely think DD is letting Sale walk

Not unexpected. If the Yanks have to settle for a guy like Happ , it will probably make them go all in for Machado and/or Harper.

They could also go for depth by signing two from Happ, A Sanchez or Morton plus one or two from Britton, Ottavino or Familia, it might work out better.

Trade Gray for a useful piece.

Sale is very appealing for me as a closer. But that means taking $100M less on his next contract. He won't do that.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to be the one to tell Sale he's going to the pen.

How much will Ottavino cost and are we still a player?
