I try not to let realism get in the way of my fandom. That said, after JD signed last year, I was really over the moon about this team and thought they could win 110 games. I tempered my expectations, trying to be realistic, and said 100, and it turned out closer to my first impulse. So, screw realism, I say Eovaldi is an All-Star 15+ game winner next year.

Sometimes you have to recognize a star in making at the beginning of his climb. There's a good chance that's where Eovaldi is in his ascension. We maybe getting his best 4 years out of this contract. Combine that with the fact that we may finally see a complete year out of E Rod and I'm excited about our prospects for 2019.

If this was at a poker table, I'm playing with the 'house' money right now.

We will likely experience some injuries. Hopefully, none will be major or to key players, but we do have an opportunity to get more out of these players who were not with us all last year, either due to injury, trade or being in the minors:

Pedroia (played 3 games)

Devers (played 121 games)

Pearce (played just 50 games with the Sox)

Vazquez (played 80 games)

Moreland (played 124 games)

Betts, JD, Beni, JBJ and Bogey all played less than 150 games

Eovaldi (Only with us for 2 months and 11 starts)

Sale (Only started 5 games after July 28th)

ERod (missed significant time- had just 23 starts)

Braiser (didn't join us until after 3 months of the season went by)

Wright (only started 4 games)

Poyner (just 22 IP)

Thornburg (just 24 IP)

Walden, Scott, Workman and others missed some time.

There's a lot of reasons we could be better next year, assuming we replace Kimbrel & Kelly in kind.

Here's what we stand to lose:

PA- Player - OPS

195 HRam .708

143 Kinsler .604

27 Phillips .520

IP- Player -ERA

74 Pomeranz 6.08

66 Joe Kelly 4.39

62 Kimbrel 2.74

14 CSmith 3.77

Merloni was on point yesterday. He said going into the playoffs, the question was ERod or Eovaldi to start in the ALDS. It came down to matchup. If the A’s beat the Yanks, Eovaldi goes to the pen and his worth never skyrockets. The guy who finished the 2018 regular season in Boston averaged less than 5IP per appearance. Then he goes on a 4 week tear and is your best pitcher as a Swiss Army knife over that time. His timing was impeccable. But does the overall package warrant the contract?

Merloni is almost always on point.

We went a year too long on Eovaldi, and the AAV is a tad too high, but that's okay.

The Sox are all in for 2019.

Here are Eovaldi's total numbers for the regular season and postseason combined:

IP 133.1

ERA 3.44

WHIP 1.076

K/BB 5.09

These numbers are vastly superior to what went before 2018. The guy was simply a much better pitcher.

Many people keep saying that Eovaldi earned his contract based on a few games in the postseason. Not true at all. He was solid in 2018, particularly after coming to Boston.

Maybe, but for once, I actually agree with Dojii. I think Keuchel or Kimbrel made more sense for that contract...

Keuchel, yes. Kimbrel, no.

Posted
Yup, it will all depend on how his arm holds up over the next 4 years.

If he can start 80 to 100 games, it'll be worth it.

It's all going to come down to his health, IMO. If he can stay healthy, I think he'll pitch well enough to earn his contract.

This deal leaves no question that the Sox are all in for 2019.

It sucks to think one of us will be in a play-in game.

There was a doubt?

Even if we didn't sign NA, we'd be division faves.

Not sure you’re division favorites with Eovaldi right now. You’ve got no pen right now. But that doesn’t matter. You make a favorites prediction before the season, not before the winter meetings

I agree. The Yanks could sign Machado, trade for Kluber, bolster the bullpen etc.

It's gonna be another war this year, jackson.

Yankees front office right now reminds me of the Ben Cherington years not offering quite enough with the top free agent pitchers, falling short a year on both Corbin and Eovaldi. Missing out on Cole last off-season.

Not sure they are going to go as high as other teams on Machado, I’m going to guess they wait out his market.and in terms of trading for Kluber or Bauer not sure they have the prospects left to get that deal done unless they trade off the major league roster.

Of course I may be completely wrong and they trade for another top arm and sign Machado.

One of the prevailing theories among Yankee fans is that they sign Machado and include Andujar in a trade for a starting pitcher such as Kluber or Bauer.

I believe that is the only way they would be able to get one of the Guardians pitchers. I just see Cashman hesitant to pull the trigger, Very much like Cherington was.

IMO it'll be a while before Machado signs with anyone. He's an egotistical punk who's overrated his own ability while ignoring his downside. Some team will sign him to a lucrative contract but they'll pay a price for it and it won't be in money.

Lol. We didn’t go to 6 and $140 mil for a guy who’s had a serviceable career and timed his career year right. We didn’t give away Andujar for 2 years of Cole and he ended up being our most productive hitter. We just dealt our top prospect for Paxton which vastly improves our rotation. We still have one more slot to fill. We have a pitcher we need to move. We’ve got money overflowing the coffers and plenty of high end players still in the market. We’ve got plenty in the farm with which to deal from if we needed to find another starter that route. Right now, the market seems to be waiting for the Machado/Harper sweeps on the offensive side and on the pitching side, the best deals are now via trade or with guys of advanced age (Morton or Happ) and then there’s the Japan posting system with Kikuchi. The Yanks have the luxury of being picky right now.

I think Yankee fans are going to be displeased if there aren't some more big moves this offseason. Personally I'm guessing there will be. The upcoming weeks are going to be very interesting indeed.

You’ve got money overflowing the coffers, but how does Hal feel about paying piles of luxury tax, and how does Cash feel about having Stanton and Machado or Harper on the books until doomsday? Lots of interesting questions to be answered.

After the Sox just won the World Series if George were still around the Yankees would have Harper, Machado, Corbin and Eovaldi signed. Hal and Hank are much more cautious.

He's gone above 6 WAR 3 of the last 4 seasons and just posted a .905OPS while playing SS along with 37HR and 107RBI. Every way you slice it, he is an elite talent

According to current WAR projections, we are not only the favorites for the division, we're also the favorites in MLB.

Not that it means anything.

Hal's comments after the Sox won the WS lead me to believe that the Yankees are going to go big on some player.

^^This.

I'm happy with Bogaerts and Devers, thank you very much.
