Why would you call it his shoulder? You have to sign off on a DL stint. Why would he sign off on his shoulder being the cause? It’ll cost him millions if there’s a shoulder concern a year plus before he tests the market

One DL stint is not going to wreck his market value. C'mon... Be real for a second.

It's now 2, but your point is well-taken.

Still, any should-related DL stint draws interest.

Maybe it will get us a discount, further pissing off the Yankees fanbases.

our medical staff is the worst in the f***ing history of medical staffs. why on earth wouldnt we have him get an MRI to begin with? listen, when your ACE goes on the f***ing DL for the same shoulder 2 stints in a row perhaps you should f***ING GIVE HIS SHOULDER EVERY TEST KNOWN TO MANKIND????!!!!????

how does this not make sense?????

f***ing idiots.

I agree that an MRI should have been done right away when Sale was on his first DL stint. I don't know why it wasn't.

I think they are just sitting him on a phantom DL stint so that he can win a ring in October.

I think there is soreness there, but I think it's probably the general type of soreness that most pitchers deal with after a start. That's my guess anyway. Sale could pitch if he needed to, but since the Sox don't need him to pitch right now, they'll let the soreness heal in hopes of him being stronger in October.

Like how the DL stints and psychological question marks suppressed the market value of Zack Greinke?

Speaking of Sale, the Sox got even more out of that deal. Kopech just went down with a UCL tear. He’ll miss all of 2019 and since he was just called up, all of it accrues under big league time. They’re gonna lose over a year of control while he recovers

It's unreal how many young pitchers go down.

Just saw that. Ouch

That's a shame for the kid, regardless of who he plays for.

So who's the better pitcher? Kluber or Sale? They both have ace stuff and great stats. The deciding difference in my opinion is that Kluber gives his team 6 months of quality starts, while Sale only gives the SOX 5 months.

At this point the additional 20-30 innings of value is a lot to overcome. This is like the Beckett-Sabbathia race of 2007. Beckett in a lot of ways was better but Sabbathia pitched more than 40 more innings and you can't ignore that.

All of our top young pitching prospects -- Espinoza, Kopech and Groome have gone down with TJ surgery.

I wonder who actually makes the decisions as regards Sale. It's tricky business because you don't want to be too conservative either. Pitchers go every 5th or 6th day because it's best for both their game, and their arm strength/health. A guy who has been on two consecutive 10-day disabled lists, and then is limited to 40 pitchers in an upcoming start, may take too much time to find his very superior dominance and rhythm.

Tom Brady usually plays one or two quarters in final games that have no real meaning to the Pats. He does this because the Pats have an extra week off before their first playoff game. I think this is similar.

40 pitches that's it. And you don't think he doesn't have something going on with his Shoulder? Trying to build his arm this late in the season. I am concerned. Just pray he has no pain, in a couple of days after this start. Edited by OH FOY!

I think it's more a matter of being extremely cautious, along with getting Sale the late season rest, than it is a matter of a serious injury. Like others have said, I think that if the race for the division were closer, Sale would be pitching.

Not buying it. Sale is and always was a competitor, he wants to pitch. Rest after AS break makes sense, not now after 2 Months. Pitch counts. This tells me that they want to see if their is any pain, after this start. Edited by OH FOY!

I think he'll be fine. Maybe I'm just being a homer, but didn't he say he'd have kept on pitching, and that the pain was not all that bad or out of the ordinary?

Being cautious is probably all this was. I guess we'll find out soon.

I am not saying it's a phantom DL stint. There was some soreness or discomfort there. I don't think it's much different than what a lot of pitchers probably experience this late in the season.

Given Sale's struggles in September and October last year, along with the comfortable lead the Sox have, they are taking whatever time they need to get Sale the extra rest and to get him 100% for the postseason.

If we were in a must win situation, I believe Sale would be pitching through it.

Does Sale's not pitching affect his almost certain Cy Young award? Or is it not much of a factor?

Yes, it has eliminated it; the best pitcher in the league needs to be durable. Missing over a month of the season should be factored in.

It probably will affect his Cy Young chances.

That said, if Sale puts his Cy chances ahead of the team's WS chances, that is not a guy that I would want on my team.

Over milking it? Waiting til the second week of September to build him up isn’t over milking it. That’s dangerous unless he was really hurt

But given the Sox lead, is there any reason to rush him back?

Maybe if the hapless Yankees had whittled the lead down to 3 games by now, Sale’s timeline might look a little different...
