You just don’t know. Even if they MRI him and it’s clean, you just don’t know. Shoulders are tricky. I’d take far more stock in his next start and the velocity he shows than any speculation. If he comes off the DL at 10 days and is topping out at 91, I’d say he’s got something bad in there. If he returns and is hitting 100, then I’d say it was precautionary

He hit 98 in the ASG and hasn't pitched since.

In fact, he got a pitch over 100MPH

"The pitch he threw to get Freeman out was clocked at 100.7 mph"

OK. 100 then. Doesn't sound like a guy with a sore shoulder. My guess is that its likely a phantom injury. Everyone in the organization knows what happened to him last year when he just wore down. The team is all in this year, going for broke. They have as good a chance as the Yankees and the Astros to win a ring IMO. Why not rest your ace for the stretch run? We have a five game lead on the Yankees and have won 7 more games...hard to disagree with the game plan.

Not the sort of July 31st surprise I was hoping for...hopefully it's something very short-term.

Sale stated last night that if the situation were crutial, he would be pitching in 2 days. He also said that he is confident he will only miss one start, although I agree with whoever said that the Sox might take this opportunity to give Sale extra rest, depending on how the Yankees series goes.

One of the beat writers said that Sale is the type of guy that you take on his word.

I am hopeful that this is more precautionary than anything else.

You're fooling nobody. You want to beat us end of. You're loving this news. And you can't be blamed for that.

I am surprised that somebody beat Jacko to starting this thread. LOL

I never knew anyone who got this disease, and now 2 NY pitchers have it Syndegard and Happ.

Strangest thing ever.

I'm just returning the good vibes from true Sox fans when they learned Judge was injured, like them I like the game and don't want to see any player injured.

Don't get me wrong, I hate to see this guy kicking the crap out of my yanks but I respect him big time, a great professional and one of the elite pitching talents in the league for a few years now

I feel the same way. As a baseball fan, you hate to see good guys get sidelined by injury, even if they are on the rival team. And when you play each other, you want it to be the best against the best. No excuses.

That said, I won't be the least bit disappointed when we beat your team with some of your players on the DL. :)

The only reason I would want Sale healthy is so that nobody around here can make excuses when we take the series this weekend

LOL That's what I'm saying. The best against the best with no excuses.

Not that I'm agreeing that the Yankees will take the series because I'm not, but wouldn't it be ironic if the only game we won is the one that Sale was supposed to pitch?

Based on previous year experience is a great plan to take advantage of your position in the standings and rest your ace at this point, this way you assure you have the best version of him towards the end of the regular season and the playoffs. Let's hope this is just a "phantom injury" and not something serious caused by "overthrowing" in the allstar game.

Same here Kimmi, I won't be grieving if we beat you with your best players on the DL.

Let's hope it's not the case and we beat you with the best lineups available

Who hasn't pitched since the ASG-Sale?

The ASG was way back on July 17. Sale has had 2 starts since then.

Thanks Boonie for denying us of a Gray and Price match up. Boonie knows who loses that.

OOPS

Just trying to confuse the Yankee fans here....seriously though, I do not recall anyone mentioning a drop in velocity in any of his starts after the ASG. Do you? I think that would have been news.

I'm trying to stay optimistic. I'm hoping they are just being super precautious.

At least we still have David Price as #2.

I am currently more concerned with Bogaerts wrist/hand after being hit by a pitch.

X-rays were negative, but per the reports, Bogaerts seemed rather concerned about it.

Thanks for bringing that up. I expect him to hit the DL too...

The money is in the MRI....

The money is in the MRI....

I don't know why they don't perform MRIs on some of these injuries right away. They didn't give Sale an MRI either, which I find kind of interesting.

At any rate, the word this morning is that Bogaerts' injury doesn't appear to be serious. There's some soreness, but he could return some time during the Yankees series.

The way things have gone in the past, that could also mean that we won't see him again this season. LOL

Advanced imaging cost money and exposes the patient to potentially harmful energy.

Maybe they wait to see how much swelling and loss of function there is before using MRI and such.

If the initial swelling is not significant and does not seem to get worse maybe that is viewed as a sign that there is not significant damage as in torn ligaments and cracked bones?

Maybe Jacko can fill us in.

If the Red Sox go 2-2 against the Yankees, and Johnson and Pomeranz (will pitch against the Blue Jays next week) give the Red Sox quality starts, I would definitely wait another rotation cycle before activating Sale--give him the extra rest. The Orioles come in after the Blue Jays--don't need a pitcher like Sale to beat the Orioles. I would look to activate Sale on Aug 14th or 15th when the Red Sox play the Phillies.

Sale is in the running for the Cy Young this year. If he should win, that gets him an extra 2.5 mil next year.

I don't think he's going to want to miss a start, just because.

If he feels healthy, he's not going to miss more than one start.

MRIs are not dangerous at all unless you have metal implants. They are not like XRays and do not transmit any harmful energy. They are expensive, but compared to what ML players are being paid its a drop in the bucket. The Red Sox medical staff has a history of delayed and missed diagnoses, and with Bogaerts' injury history it would seem prudent that an MRI be obtained if only to reassure him.

I think its dumb if one was not done already. Why wait?

I am certainly no expert on the subject!

I would get the best imaging possible so the best diagnosis and treatment can be realized.

Yeah there's no way a sports franchise will worry about the cost of an MRI.

I may be wrong on this, but don't they sometimes wait a day for an MRI to allow for any swelling to occur/disappear? I'm sure I read somewhere that they sometimes take an extra day or so for clarity.

It all sounds very noble, but all I'm saying is I doubt if you're up 10-2 tonight you'll be cursing the baseball gods for not having Sale pitch tonight in place of Brian Johnston.

People only remember the winners, not the injuries.
