I am wondering why the team doesn't call Lin up to play 2B?

He is likely not going to continue hitting like that, but he's worth a shot. At the very least, he would be solid defensively.

IMO, he's an upgrade over what Nunez has been giving us. Call him up and phantom DL Nunez.

I've been wondering about that for some time.

Nunez might benefit by having a couple weeks off.

I feel like he's been playing hurt, and maybe some time off can help him get back to close to where he was last summer.

When I watch him, I see a guy that can not stress the leg too much nor can he push off on it. I am willing to bet it is swollen and causing him discomfort at night.

And I agree 100 percent, he needs to go to the dl and we should bring up Lin. Eight weeks or so off now and maybe he is healthy enough for the September race and hopefully playoffs.

Is that Canadian for “you were right all along, mvp”?

Well, you were right that we should have traded him before this injury. That's about it, though.

For the Month of June Lin has been hitting down in Pawtucket. .316

He is starting to surprise me with the bat. He's improved a lot since he was originally signed.

Of course Castillo is hitting .387 for June but he sucks, right? Probably the best Defensive CF in the International League.

Castillo would be more of an option for Boston if:

1) his contract was not so prohibitive in the wake of the new CBA. Like it or not, this appears to be a reality. And

2) Dombrowski didn't think Castillo was nothing more than a fourth OF.

If Castillo plays extremely well the whole season, maybe the Red Sox trade JBJ in the offseason and Castillo is the 2019 CF'er. It's a possibility, at least.

I expected to see Nunez and Holt in the OF more this year, even with Pedey on the bench.

I guess trying to make JD happier is a big factor, and with Nunez's knee making him look hobbled, our hands are tied to some extent.

JBJ looks to be the everyday CF'er- sink or swim.

If we traded Swihart and brought up Lin, maybe we could use Holt in the OF more often, but I'm not sue if that is a net gain, unless Lin mashes at 2B.

How likely is that?

2018 Innings in the OF

623 Beni

572 JBJ

478 Betts (was on DL)

257 JMart

69 Swihart

53 Holt

9 Travis

2B innings:

470 Nunez

175 Holt (should be more)

27 Pedey

15 Lin

What's wrong with Pedey's below market value contract?

What does his contract have to do with someone actually playing the position and contributing. The contract is fine, but at this stage, it's more like Coach Pedey. He may still be back with some capacity but DD/Cora cannot count on it this year, maybe 2019 and then for 110-120 games. Which is what Nunez was hired for, Hold down April/May, then Pedey can play. As Mike Tyson said, "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth !".

I have been wondering the same thing. Quite frankly Nunez has played about the worst defensive 2nd base I've seen in years.

I've been wondering about that for some time.

It appears that the FO does in fact read Talksox and has followed our advice.

Lin has been called up!

Not that I agree with you when it comes to Pedroia, but this post cracked me up.

Has to be in response to Bogaerts' finger.

I'm sure that's the reason. But it's more fun to think that we influenced the FO by what we posted. LOL

Don't encourage the miserable SOB. ;)

I was right all along tho.

It's just hard for some people to accept my genius.

Question on Pedroia’s contract and the luxury tax limits. What happens if he retires? Does the reason for retirement make a difference? I recall a few years ago that when Dempsey retired, the Sox got salary relief. But that was a voluntary decision by Dempster. If Pedroia is medically forced to retire, is it treated differently?

I'm not positive, but I think the only way the Sox get salary and luxury tax relief is if Pedroia retires voluntarily, meaning he is willing to give up the remainder of his contract. If he is medically forced to retire, his contract is still guaranteed.

I've been thinking about this quite a bit. Money wise not sure. But I really hope he knows when to call it a career and end it. If he lingers much more and doesn't return and help, it becomes a sad sob story.

I'd like to see him stay with the Sox regardless of his capacity. IMO it's just a matter of time before we see his number up on the wall there with the others.

Can Pedey retire from baseball and sacrifice his salary, then be rehired as a coach/scout, etc. at the same salary? That would take his salary off the books as it pertains to the LT. Would that pass the smell test with MLB?

Same thinking here. Just do some backroom deal where he retires. But he and the Sox nod in agreement and gets compensated. He'd be a great person in the booth once in a while, the guys flat out funny. And I'm sure he could help younger players. Heck, give him a Pedro deal. We just pay you to do nothing, but you're cool, so hang around and be cool and we will pay you.

We spent $8M on Nunez as a remedy for the Pedey situation. DD already addressed the 2B position, and he used up just about every scrap or resources we had to build the current roster.

I'm not arguing that 2B may or may not be our weakest position, but I think we are going to sink or swim with Nunez/Holt (Lin/Marco).

By the deadline, we'll know more about Pedey, and if Nunez/Holt are still not getting it done, perhaps 2B is where we look to upgrade, but by then, maybe another position looks like it is a higher need.

We only have a few precious resources left and can't fill all our needs. My guess is that we wait it out and make our decision near the end of July.

"Needs" is a relative term. Right now we have the second best record in baseball. We are second in the league in runs scored, second in OPS, and third in ERA. I would submit that while another bat would be a luxury our biggest need is to stay healthy. Do that and this team is constructed for a decent playoff run.

Really could have used a Marco Hernandez right now. All teams endure injuries but it stings more when you have a bunch of guys playing the same position injured. I would be inclined to say we shouldn't have trade away Marrero, but I don't think he gives us anything more than what Lin would right now.

I agree - it really is about who can stay healthy.

The Red Sox have signed second baseman Brandon Phillips to a minor league contract:

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/06/red-sox-sign-brandon-phillips.html

He was still a slight plus on UZR/150 (+0.9) last year at 2B, but he's been -7 DRS two years in a row.

e's probably still better on D than Holt and Nunez, even though he's 37.

He hit .735 last year with 13 HRs, so he coudl prove to be an upgrade on offense.

I was hoping Nunez was the Pedey insurance we needed, but now it looks like he is just utility.
