The fact that Ramirez’s contract includes a vesting option for the 2019 season did not come into play, Dombrowski was careful to note. “The vesting option has nothing to do with it,” he said. “We’re trying to do everything we can to win.” Whether or not it was a driving factor in the decision, the option can no longer vest, as it had been on track to do had Ramirez remained a semi-regular part of the Boston lineup.

At this point you are just trolling.

At this point you're dodging the question (which may be answered the specific terms of the Red Sox contract with Hanley Ramirez ... or not).

Let me go on record as saying that I'm not a fan of the move.

Let me also go on record as saying that there was an awful lot of BS being flung by Dombrowski in his press conference today.

Just when I was starting to like the dude a little more....

I am so glad that you mentioned this. I was just about comfortable with the idea that DD was a straight shooter. Then he spent 18 minutes bullshitting the press today.

He said that the salary cap considerations had nothing to do with this decision. Right.

Now Cora is on tv selling some of the roster limitations that were forced by Hanley.

And Dombrowski also said this move has nothing to do with Hanley's option.

Seriously Dave, just shut up.

Boom. This is what I tried to say. Just ********.

But I have no problem losing that contract.

As I said elsewhere, I get the logic behind DFAing Hanley.

I don't like it one bit though, especially so early in the season.

I believe he has to say that in order to avoid issues from the Player's Union...

I, for one, am happy the Pablohram era is finally over.

What a collosal waste of money.

I agree.

Let the Rusney Castillo Era begin!!!

I wish Hanley well for sure and yes he was a good trooper but the simple suggestion that he might serve as a role model is just a bit too far out there for me. Good for you if you feel this way but my little 6 year old probably won't be modeling his lifestyle after Hanley Ramirez. I'm happy for those who think that he was something that he wasn't.

I second this.

Somewhere Ben Cherington tosses in his sleep thinking of what might have been, if the Sox had kept Theo or better yet let Larry Lucchino back under the tent for personnel decisions.

There was no need for Dombrowski to cover up the ambush, except to have cover vs the MLBPA. Now Cora will have his flexibility. Maybe wake up some other guys named Bradley.

That would be Toronto --where he is back in his comfort zone -- coffee boy.

I agree. Not sure what the specifics of this kind of deal are, but obviously, the intent is to distinguish a 'regular player' from one who sits on the bench, not to distinguish a guy who gets 490ABs from one who gets 500. And had the RS said they were releasing him specifically to avoid next year's contract, or worse, given him another 150 ABs or so before releasing him, they would certainly have been violating the spirit of that clause.

It may be a coincidence, but the ringling brothers circus announces their demise shortly after desperate dave is hired to run the Red Sox.

And now we have a full fledged circus operating in our baseball operations department!

Nope, that's not how it works. Only the GM gets credit around here.

Well, technically... DD isn’t a GM. If you want to get technical about it.

I didn't like Hanley's contract, but I liked him, I think he really did enjoy playing here, sucks to see him go. I completely understand why the move was made, and in terms of money it was the right move, but man it feels so weird to see a guy bat 3rd all season, then be DFA'd the next day. Crazy

Crazy indeed to see a guy hitting third all season released, esp when all we heard is that the chief reason for this was that Cora loved the guy. And yet now we pretty much know it was Cora's suggestion that he be dropped, and not DD's. Go figure.

I guess Cora was just giving Hanley the best possible chance to prove himself and while not exactly failing, failed in accordance with what the contract cost this year--and esp next year. He's gone because unless he hit with power and average, he needed to be gone. It was another failed signing.

Hanley was who he was ...a fading player who had flashes albeit increasingly loooooong waited flashes of what he once was .Hanley was a great teammate and we loved the thought of him replacing Papi but he wasn't even a 20 th of the hitter we thought he was .The contract was disgusting and it's time to move on .

No matter whether the DFAing was based on BS or was justifiable, I judge it addition by subtraction. Baseball's a business like any other and it's always about the money. Hanley was paid millions here in Boston and for the most part he didn't earn it. And I'm also glad that the PABLO/HANLEY era is finally over. The SOX definitely didn't miss Hanley tonight and it definitely makes Cora's job of managing a lot easier.

Just goes to show, you can't believe everything anybody associated with management says.

I don't agree with it too much. He hasn't been hitting his best lately, but were talking about someone that came thru strong at clutch times(Didn't he have 1 or 2 walk off hits this year?)..To me, he's part of the teams backbone......Its not all about current batting average......I understand its a money decision but Id rather keep the team beefed up on bats and maybe reconsider how much were paying Kimbrel....What about Nunez? Why are they holding on to him?

They didn't miss him tonight, but don't forget the walk off hits, including at least 1 this year by HanRam. I understand he wouldnt get as much use, but why r they holding on to Nunez?

Please dnt get me wrong and please understand that I do see where Cora is coming from....but hasn't HanRam come thru in more crucial situations than Moreland as well?

It's not over. The Sox remain on the hook for Fatboy's salary through 2019, I believe.

That is true and I believe he is owed $5 million in 2020.
