Seems to me the obsession with cheating is something normally seen only in a select group of sports fans, who don't get out much, or 10-year-olds generally.

If one wants to expand the definition of "cheating" to stealing signs, using corked bats, doctoring baseballs and using technology or PEDS, my guess is half the league would be guilty. That's not saying it's okay, but really? Ban all cheaters?

Do we ban the whole Sox team that used apple watches?

Cora served his time, as did Hinch and Lunhow. I guess redemption is not something some believe in. No glass in their houses.

It's a nice catchy phrase, but I find it to not be 100% true, people do change.

It would be like saying once a dick, always a dick, and we all know ___ is no longer one.

Cora cheated against the Red Sox in 2017. And yet they still hired him…

Baseball doesn’t ban cheaters for life. Just gamblers.

Gaylord Perry cheated, too, and he was not only not banned, he was enshrined…

A lifetime of HYUCKS and AW SHUCKS on TWIB.

...and then rehired the unforgivable lowlife.

Technically the rehire was the only time they hired him after knowing he cheated. Unless he talked about it in his first go round of interviews.

“Ever hear that trash can banging when we are up? That was me!”

I've only been watching or playing baseball for half a century, but in almost every game uniformed personnel in dugouts try to steal signs from third base coaches to baserunners, who they try to pick off from the mound or the plate with special plays; they even have a sign of their own for pitch-outs!

But not once did any of those players or coaches ever receive such hatred.

The hatred has had an extended lifetime because (a) it was successful and (B) it lasted for a full season before anyone got wise to it. The Pedroia watch incident was squashed quickly and everyone moved on. If people found out that there was an organizational push for Apple watches to be used during games and that the Sox had been doing so for years, it would have been a much bigger deal. It's why the video guy (JT Watkins) got a stiffer sentence, because of the duration. Good thing he ended up with a softer landing and that he's out in LA with his buddy JD for a nice reunion this year.

I'm not presumming anything. You did, when you said he was cheating, then back-peddled to "suspect," and now are swinging back to assuming he still is.

You have the worst reading comprehension skills. Icora cheated. Period. As a result he forfeited any trust. I never back peddle.

There are legitimate techniques within the game to :steal" signs which are within the rules. Just like stealing a base is legitimate. What Cora did was determined tby the Commissioner of Baseball o be illegitimate and cheating. The Commissioner let Cora and the others go with a proverbial slap on the wrist. An earlier Commissioner such Judge Landis would not be so lenient.

To punish the guilty is not hatred it is called justice.

Completely irrelevant (and also completely theoretical) what a previous commissioner would have done. The current commissioner - the only one that matters - levied a punishment he felt was sufficient and Cora served his time…

I know. It's ridiculous. Years ago, I (like many of us) had to deal with a number of indignant folks of the "If he lied about sex, he would lie about ANYTHING!" persuasion. I assured them that everyone lies about sex and that if I ever had sex with them (yuch),` I promise I would lie about it.

Still cheating> suspect> still cheating...

No evidence.

Comprehend?

Apparently, some are beyond reproach, or they have never had sex.

LOL

Never back-peddle? You consider that a virtue? So what do you do when you discover you were wrong? or are you never wrong?

Admitting to being wrong is a sign of weakness for some.

It's hard to know, if they convince themselves they are not wrong (or never wrong.)

Apologies are an impossibility.

i sort of have a different take on Cora's cheating. when it comes to winning, i subscribe to the old theory that "if you're not cheating, then you're not trying". i want the Sox to use every advantage they can to win balls games. if it's cheating, that's fine. just don't get caught. LOL. with that said, i've been unhappy with Cora many times over the years. besides "resting" players two weeks into the season, one thing that particularly irks me is his unwillingness to challenge calls. i've seen numerous plays that would have been overturned that he never even bothered with. WTF? C'mon man, you have to use every tool available to win games and it's like he doesn't care. he consistently ranks near the bottom of all managers in challenges. He has just 18 this year. Kevin Cash leads with 54. i know there is a lot of Cora support on here and though i'm fine if he stays, i wouldn't be upset even a little if he was canned.

I think Cora is an average manager. Stay? Go? I don't think it really matters. He needs to be given a good team again before I can really evaluate him.

A good manager is someone who can take his, and beat yours, or take yours, and beat his.

It doesn't really work that way in baseball. Over the long haul, the manager can get you a few extra wins and maybe manage the bullpen a little better, but I think we overstate how much impact they actually have.

There aren't the x's and o's in baseball that there are in other sports. It's the most individualized of all team sports.

Sometimes it’s just as simple as a new face, and a difference voice being in charge like it was with Morgan Magic.

I guess we shouldn't have fired Bloom, then. Cora should be able to win with anything you hand him.

Morgan Magic didn't win any postseason games, as I recall.

Oh I don't know. I think Cora is very good. But it is possible I am wrong. But it is hard to look at the Red Sox record over his two tenures and feel like they have not largely maximized the roster.
