Farrell made it clear the Sox plan to use Nunez as an everyday player or close to it.

The offense is going to be gr-r-r-r-r-eat!

I can live with this if they don't think Devers is ready, but they need to add another bat. Nunez will not be enough.

Danny Espinosa, who is making his first start for Seattle today, provides an interesting comp for Eduardo Nunez in that Espinosa and Nunez are 30-year-old infielders who switched teams this week.

The trends clearly favor Nunez, although Espinosa has posted 10.6 fWAR in 857 career games while Nunez has posted 3.3 fWAR in 631 career games:

.

Espinosa has posted a negative 0.8 fWAR in 78 games this year while Nunez has posted 1.2 fWAR in 76 games. However, over the two previous seasons Espinosa had combined for 4.0 fWAR while Nunez had combined for 3.8 fWAR. The rest-of-season projections give Nunez a clear advantage.

Espinosa has played only 16 career games at third base, where the Red Sox had their greatest need. Earlier this week Seattle signed Espinosa to a prorated league minimum of about $200,000 after the Los Angeles Angels released the veteran infielder. The Red Sox reportedly will pay Nunez the $1.56 million balance on his 2017 contract.

I think i might be the only poster who likes this trade:o

Nope - me too . Looks like he can hit. We need anyone that can hit just a little bit better than a little. Hitters needed!

After hearing this news I just blew a load in my pants.

This team is glory bound!

Nunez is basically a version of Brock Holt who is actually good (see Holt 2014). And that would help! Between 1B, 3B and spelling other spots there are the ABs for him.

This move was part of the master plan to ensure the Sox come in dead last for team HR's. They want to keep this team a photo negative of all those old 70's lumbering slugging teams.

I know he was supposedly expendable, but I sure miss Travis Shaw. And just think of the numbers Adrian Beltre would have been racking up for us all these years.

All true, but Mr. Devers looks like he has the ability to go yard at least.

My guess? DH

My guess is that Hanly and Xander need a lot of TLC, and will not contribute much this year./ Both Devers and Lin belong in that infield!

HRam is fine.

Lin is a dream not reality.

Nunez should play SS while we give Bogey 10 days on the DL. After that, he can rotate between 3B, DH and LF.

Nunez can run well. He had 40 steals a year ago, so Farrell will probably get him thrown out at 3rd about 5 times with 0 outs or 2 outs.

"Guys, we're going to do a triple steal. It'll totally work!"

No way that's happening. There will be two guys at 3rd or 2nd. No way we get three players on same page.

Here we are on the 28th with the trade deadline on the near horizon. I think DD has admitted that the team could use some help beyond Nunez and there is still a little room on the Luxury tax threshold. We still could use a good BP setup man and a power hitting first baseman. What is holding up the process/

1. Not much money available below the Luxury Tax Limit

2. Limited minor league talent we are willing to part with

3. No players out there we find that enticing

4. FO inertia

5. Other

A combo of 2 and 3. Still 3 days left though.

There is a way we could reset the luxury tax next year instead of this year by replacing Young and Moreland with Devers and Travis or some cheap FA corner IF'er. Let Abad walk. If we have to, we could trade another contract.

Personally, it would make more sense next year, so we would be one step lower on the tax scale into the future, but I think it's probably easier this year.

I doubt there would be any takers for Young or Moreland. Trading both would free up about $4M to spend elsewhere this year.

I think there are likely players out there who are enticing, but the cost of acquiring them would be too high. Even if we didn't have the constraints of #1 and #2, Dombrowski and Henry might deem the costs too high. There's not a whole lot of things that can be done, however, when the there's only about $5 mil to play with and the farm is mostly barren.

Yup, there's still time. I expect something to be done, most likely adding a reliever.

From what I've read, it will be hard for the team to stay under the tax limit next year. They want to reset this year so that they will have the leeway to do what they want financially next year without worrying about the extreme penalties.

Yeah, it's not as easy as moon is making it out to be. They are going to be right up to it next year even if they don't bring anyone new in.

Yes, we probably painted ourselves into a corner with the big contracts we took on where the players involved failed to return any real value. With the Price situation (real or fiasco) the club now loses some of its strength. We were known for pitching and defense, now less so. The drop in performance of especially Bogaerts and Moreland means our run scoring is not competitive. With the Yankees and Rays both trading for help while the Red Sox barely have done anything, it looks as if the Sox will struggle to even make it as a wild card team. If that happens, you can bet the Sox management and coaching will be modified and some of our players who have been thought of as untouchable, will also be gone.

It is easy to be frustrated by what has happened and is happening to this team and I admit to feeling that frustration. There is still some possibility that the arrival of Devers and Nunez will add interest and keep us in the hunt but it is a lot to ask from a rookie and a rental.

Seems to me bogey needs to spend some time on the dl. Since he got hit in the wrist in Tampa, he is hitting under .200 and looks bad at the plate. Nunez can play short until bogey is healthy and that keeps Devers at third.

I think Dombrowski will pull something off between now and the deadline. I don't know what that will be, but I don't see him doing nothing. Maybe the additions of Nunez and Devers will get the offense going. We can hope anyway.

I have not yet heard what roster move is being made to make room for Nunez on the 25. I'm guessing Marrero.

This has been an extremely frustrating season. The team needs to get it going.

Beni, Bogey and Betts need to get going. Moreland needs to sit down if slump continues. Having Nunez and Devers should help. Many ways to skin the cat.

Team needs to stick to the original 'stay' under the cap plan. Unless they go BIG and I mean BIG.

What really sucks is Carson Smith not returning. What the hell is wrong with our medical staff?

I'd rather reset this year. I never said it would be easy next year. The big advantage with next year would be that the big tax step would be delayed one extra year as we hit all the big arb and re-sign years.

I said it would be easier to reset this year.

I think bogey, Moreland, Hanley and Pedroia are playing hurt.

Benintendi is for all intensive purposes playing his triple a season in Boston and needs to keep adjusting to how he is being pitched.

Vazquez and Leon are catching the best pitching staff in the American League.

Bradley is pulling his Weight.

Betts is Hot or Mia and that is frustrating.

Third base has been a black hole. Maybe devers or Nunez bring it to respectability.

Reserves, that do not catch, have been injured a ton or ineffective.

And yet we are in the think of a pennant race. Amazing!

We need Guys to get healthy and hit like we know they can.

With Nunez joining the Sox, Marrero is optioned to Pawtucket. Devers stays.

Ysla was DFA'd

That was to get Nunez on the 40 man. The Marrero move was to get him on the 25 man roster.

Much as we want to rag on Price, his loss, if for an extended period of time, is a big one. Expecting Johnson to fill that spot is not realistic.
