Really another longshot might be Devers gets demoted.

As much as we have made of Bradley's (4 for his last 56) struggles, Devers' slump (8 for his last 57) is fairly comparable. Both players have options.

And Devers has been less of a defenisve contributor.

I doubt it happens, but it certainly is an option. Of course, if Nunez is still somewhat gimpy, placing him on the DL is certainly the frontrunner. Unless someone else gets more seriously hurt between now and Pedroia's return...

I'd very much like to see the Sox trade for Machado, put him at third, and demote Devers to AAA (which I don't think he's spent any time at). I can dream right?

If they demoted Devers, it'd be a time share with Nunez and Holt. If Nunez was actually hitting, maybe that would make sense. I think Cora is a big fan of Devers and is just going to keep him around no matter what.

Care to elaborate?

Our farm is about as shot as can be. Getting Machado would mean losing just about all prospect value plus maybe Devers or Beni.

That's a nightmare, to me.

Of course, I'd love to have Macahdo, and I might try to trade for him, if he a greed to a reasonable extension, but that ain't happening.

Wonder how Devers hit last May in Boston? June? 399 at bats, in the Majors. Big difference compared to a guy with 1867 at bats. This is way more of a concern. Basically a Rookie having a slump, you don't expect it?

You really don't want to hear JBJ's numbers in his first 399 at bats.

Maybe the pitchers didn't know his strengths and weaknesses. Now they know his plate discipline is not there they consistently give him pitchers off the plate and he offers all to often. It is curable so lets hope he makes adjustments. His hand eye coordination looks okay and we know he has bat speed and power. I think he will be okay. Perhaps a low average but still a contribution with extra base hits and RBI's.

Strange that JBJ has drawn 4 BBs and been HBP 2 times in his last 8 games (29 PAs).

Its possible that his presence caused us to lose games would would have won had a better hitter been in the lineup-because the factors such as the quality of the opposing pitcher or team may have been less competitive when he was in the lineup than when he wasn't. Many other factors could also play a role. Who on the Sox was resting when he played, for example. Unless you correct for the variables its impossible to know the impact of playing him. I do know this: he is a disaster with a bat in his hands and its likely his presence has cost us runs, if not games.

By the same token, it's possible that we would have won some games that Jackie did not play in if he had been playing.

Remember how upset people got when Swihart got hurt when playing LF?

Imagine if JMart got seriously hurt playing in the OF just so JBJ could be benched.

I shudder to think about it.

I think Nunez and Holt should take some time in LF if Bradley gets optioned to ease the wear and tear on his legs.

Nunez is actually a better OF'er than IF'er, but that's not saying much.

To me, Nunez looks hobbled. With Holt starting off well, I'd DL Nunez and give him 5-6 days off and 4-5 days to get back into the swing of things at AAA. By then, we'll see if JBJ is still ice cold or not and maybe give him a stint at AAA, if warranted. That buys Swihart a little more time, but I'm not sure if all this is worth it, if Swihart is eventually traded anyways.

I guess if Vaz or Leon get hurt in the meantime, it might all have been proven to be worthwhile.

Well I mean, Martinez actually is an outfielder...we were just asking Swihart to figure it out as he went.

He played LF in HS and for Team USA tho?

We gave the super athletic Swihart a chance to find another position after apparently proving to Sox management he cannot catch at the ML level.

We did him a favor.

The injury was unfortuneate, but Swihart should have no complaints.

He'll get a chance with another team, soon.

From what I read, he tried his glove at 1st, 2nd and 3rd. He has played some OF in games, but he is just not an adequate glove man at any position to earn him a position.

Maybe if he stuck to one position for a while he could become better than adequate.

If he could hit better than Holt or Nunez, he wouldn't have to be good on defense anywhere, as long as he could just play the role.

I've always had pretty high hopes for Swihart, but he's never proven he can hit better than Holt or Nunez. Without any plus on defense, he's lucky to still be on the ML roster.

This is a pretty fair assessment Moon ...I can live with that .

High school is a little bit different from the majors, and Team USA was a short stint. JD's been an outfielder his whole career

No. He Needs to be a hitter to really find a way to stick. I always liked him as a prospect, but in MLB today most players have a very brief window to develop and stick, And if they can't do it, there is always someone younger and quicker and less injured trying to take your place.

That said, I could see some faltering team giving him a decent shot in RF. That might be the position he fits into best...

If Holt can stick around with a .332 career OBP and an OPS below .700 with that glove, the bar should not be much higher for Swihart.

Nunez has a career .313 OBP and an OPS just over .725.

It's not hard to imagine Swihart hitting better than .725 or .750, if given a long look, and if he could do that he should make a team and get to play, but that's a big if.

It's hard to read much into Swihart's MLB numbers. He's played hurt and was called up before his expected arrival date. He was over .710 after his first 380 PAs in the bigs.

His .615 AAA OPS is very discouraging, but it was only 485 PAs spread over 4 years with some falling during rehab times.

The .843 AA OPS in 387 PAs seems so long ago, and I guess 2014 was pretty long ago.

I guess I've just lost a lot of the early hope I had in his offense. I've never had much hope in his defense. Early on, I suggested a position change, but some of that was based on my belief that Vaz was going to be better than he's shown, so far.

JBJ had a great game last night, both offensively and defensively. Maybe it’s a sign of him heating up. Fingers crossed!

I thought his swing was better last night on the two hits he got. Quick and compact. IIRC on his last AB the ball was on the outside of the plate and he pulled it - because the swing was a little longer. But... progress is progress!

Two things to remember:

1) If he goes 0-4 in his next game it DOESN'T mean that he'll never hit again.

2) if he goes 4-4 in his next game it doesn't mean it's time to trade him, while his value is higher. :)

I'll be surprised if he plays tonight though. It seems like every time a struggling player gets a couple of hits he sits the next game out.
