I've thought about the following strategy.

(1) Bogaerts plays out his final arbitration season with the Red Sox in 2019. The Red Sox let him leave via free agency (draft compensation).

(2) The Red Sox trade Bradley Jr. after the 2018 season, move Mookie Betts to CF. I'm expecting the Red Sox to get a really good prospect for Bradley Jr.

(3) The Red Sox let Kimbrel walk after 2018 (draft compensation) and sign a bridge closer, a guy like Z.Britton, to a one year pillow contract and he keeps the closer spot warm for D.Feltman. If Britton has a big year in 2019, the Red Sox can get draft compensation for Britton.

------so, in sum, the Red Sox will not give long term contracts to Bogaerts, Bradley Jr., or Kimbrel.-----------

(4) Sign B.Harper to a long term contract.

(5) CJ Chatman takes over for Bogaerts at SS in 2019.

(6) With the addition of Harper, the Red Sox don't have to be concerned about JD Martinez opting out after the 2019 season. If he wants to opt out, let him opt out. No sweat.

(7) I have the Red Sox signing Sale to a long term deal, but they will replace Porcello with a cost controlled young starter, e.g., Houck, Shawaryn.

I don't know if such plans are economically feasible, maybe signing Sale, Harper, and Betts to long term deals will prove to be impossible. But I do have the Red Sox saving money by NOT signing Bogaerts (replaced by a cost controlled player), Bradley, Porcello (replaced by a cost-controlled player), and Kimbrel (eventually replaced by Feltman) to long term deals.

This team would be a powerhouse in 2019 with Harper replacing Bradley Jr. in the lineup. Bogaerts is still a Red Sox in 2019. Porcello is still a Red Sox in 2019.

I've never heard of CJ Chatman. This plan hinges on him being a pretty good shortstop.

An idea I've been thinking of is getting a good shortstop and moving Bogaerts over to third, where he played well at in 2013.

JD's numbers blow away Harper's numbers this year.

How do you get 'no sweat' out of that?

While Harper has been on the upswing since the all-star break, yeah I'm with Bellhorn here. JDM is the best hitter in baseball right now.

Keeping JD, Sale and Betts far outweigh the addition of Harper.

If we get Harper, we are sure to lose one (or another one).

Its probably going to be next to impossible to retain all three of them anyway. And in that case, Betts needs to be the top priority of the three...

I agree, but adding Harper mean we almost surely lose two (JD & Sale).

Bryce was as bad as he could be until a month ago and his OPS is almost at .900 right now. This is a guy with insane skill. He will go to a deep pocketed team and he will likely dominate for them

I hope it's not the Sox. I like our outfield just fine, thanks.

When the Sox waived Hanley, it wasn't necessary at that time. I only bring it up because the thought of trading a GG who helps the pitching staff is silly. No way to get better by doing it. It's a loss in every respect. HanRam, the Sox got lucky overall that Pearce picked up his slack.

Tommy Harper, bring him back.

Tommy Harper is the reason I am a Sox fan.

I lived in the shadow of County Stadium in Milwaukee Wisconsin back in the last 60's to 1970. The Seattle Pilots moved to Milwaukee, and I used to pay a dollar to watch some games from the bleacher. (Imagine, I sometimes went alone as a 5th grader!)

Tommy was easily the most exciting player to watch, and he quickly became my favorite player. He was something like the 3rd player ever to hit 30 HRs and steal 30 bases in the same season.

We moved from Milwaukee to Portland, ME in the summer of 1971. In the fall of 1971, he was traded by the Milwaukee Brewers with Patrick Skrable, Lew Krausse and Marty Pattin to the Boston Red Sox for Ken Brett, Billy Conigliaro, Joe Lahoud, Jim Lonborg, Don Pavletich and George Scott.

I switched to the Red Sox that winter and started as a Sox fan in 1972. The rest is history.

(I thought the Brewers were going to win it all (before the Sox) in 1982 vs the Cards. A guy I bet even paid me my "winnings", only to see the cards bounce back from down 3 games to 2 after a bad call.)

I was just looking through https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/04/2018-19-mlb-free-agent-power-rankings.html and I'm wondering why no one has mentioned acquiring Josh Donaldson to play 3B in the offseason?

You mean acquire him in the off season to play 3B next year?

Where would he play in the off season?

(LOL- just razzin' you!)

All JBJ needs to do is muster an OPS of around .700, as he is now doing, and he is a solid component of a well-balanced team.

The thing is, he's around .700 for the year now after that abysmal start. Moon knows how to access a certain time frame - I don't - but he's got to be .800+ for the past couple of months.

I'm not sure how some are able to get numbers over very specific time frames, but I do know this:

JBJ's OPS

.653 June

.811 July

.826 August

He was at .563 on June 23rd and ended June at .619, so he must have been over .800 for that stretch.

Also, he was at .510 before the game on May 13th and ended up at .600 after May 31st, so I'm pretty sure he was over .800 for that stretch.

My guess is, he's over .800 from May 12 to today (3+ months), or he is at least in the high .790's.

For those who jumped to conclusions based on his first 6 weeks, what do they have to say about his last 12 weeks?

Again, I'm fine with JBJ playing GG defense and hitting .600, so this is all gravy.

On the B-R Game Log page you just click on the left-hand side of the first game you want and the last game you want and it gives you the numbers for that stretch.

I'd say that you don't know how to count weeks. Through June 15th, he was OPSing 569. 11 weeks.

Wow, so easy!

Posters were slamming JBJ after just 3-4 weeks. I mentioned 6, to make it half of his last 12 weeks. I could have said 2, 3, 4 ,5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11.

I'm still enjoying the Blake Swihart vs. Jackie Bradley Jr. batting race. Today it is close!

Swihart: .223

Bradley Jr: .225

Now, look at OPS:

.693 JBJ

.558 Swihart
