not with 2 pitches. and 1 of them is mediocre at best.

He won 17 games last year. He'd be better this again this year if baseball wasn't LOL random.

I get that.

Pom certainly helped us get to the dance last year, and that had value, despite us not winning a ring.

Had he done what he did the first half of 2016 in the second half of 2016, we might have gone farther.

He's been no help this year.

One very good season, one half okay, and one horrible. I was kinda hoping for better, but with Espi's injury, the trade looks good for Boston.

Espi still has a chance to change the hindsight argument.

Espi had TJS, which is more a right of passage these days. The jury is still out on him, clearly. The kid turns 21 in March, so he is still young, and he should be fully healthy entering the post season training program.

Wonder what the diagnoses would be if he was still in the Sox organization... Hmm...

Espinosa was an overhyped prospect. We got what we could for him. If we had held on to him, he trade value today would be less. The minor leagues are teeming with hard throwing young hurlers.

He definitely was overhyped. He was young with electric stuff who just debuted in A ball and held his own. He didn't dominate. Everyone saw the stuff and dropped their jaw. DD capitalized on this. Look at most minor league clubs now 3 years later. Most farms have guys like Espi who have insane stuff yet haven't polished or harnessed it yet.

So he was overhyped because he had TJS?

Certainly having that surgery would diminish hid trade value. But at the time of the trade, he was an 18yo kid pitching in A ball, making him nearly 4 years younger than the average player in his league, and was ranked #19 by Baseball America.

He did have trade value. He just got hurt...

How much do you think Pomeranz will get after this year?

I think he is a very strong candidate for a 1-year prove it deal.

Anderson Espinosa : One full season in low A Ball in 2016. W/L - 6-11 - 4.49 ERA - 1.4 WHIP . More than a hit per inning. Less than a strikeout per inning. This is before he got hurt. Overhyped.

having a FB under 90MPH isn't random. it's suck.

batters have learned to sit CB and react to that slow ass FB. he is getting obliterated. perhaps it took 1.5 seasons for the "book" on him to have Great Success! but so it has. and he has zero answer. he has 2 pitches. he is a reliever that barely became a SP before we gave up solid gold for.....

Nah, this year's just a fluke! You can't pass up on Pom at veteran's minimum!

I tend to agree with the way you look at Espinoza but I do also think that you have to take his age into consideration when he was actually pitching. He was younger than most.

Problem with Pomeranz is he doesn't throw strikes. Throws a million pitches to go 5 innings. Don't need no more BP killers for starters.

Booo!!! Scouting the stat line, boo!!!!!

There are reasons to be skeptical of Espinoza - but the stat line ain't it. He struck out 100 guys in 108 innings as the league's youngest regular. He did not dominate the level you'd expect "the next pedro" to do - but he was very good and still very much profiled as a potential top of the rotation sort.

He was 18 , pitching in low A Ball. Not so unusual. Not like he was a boy playing against grown men at that level. He is now 20 , and has yet to do anything to warrant the hype. We can wait a few more years I guess.

Yes, I look forward to having this conversation for the next 5 years too.

Well MVP , the way it looks , this trade JBJ thread will still be going strong five years from now. So we can reassess the Espinosa deal right here at that time.

You don’t see a lot of 18 year olds in long season. That’s the difference. He’s now 20, to be 21 by opening day next season. He’ll likely head to High A where he’ll be a year or so younger than the average player

The Sox knew they were giving up a premium prospect. At the same time, I think Dombrowski - not unreasonably - decided that the high variability that comes with an 18 year old pitcher in Single A was enough reason to cash him in to help the major league club who had a division to win.

I did not love the move - but my disagreement is more in the "I disagree, but I get where he's coming from, and his view is pretty reasonable" vs "What the heck is that guy doing?"

The Sox won't be able to re-sign JBJ BECAUSE OF THE CLIFF!!!!!!

He was also EIGHTEEN YEARS OLD!! Should the sox really give up on every 18yo who isn't an immeidate superstar?

At 19, Mookie Betts had a .658 OPS in low A-ball. Maybe he should have been dealt then, too...

Which isn't moon's suggested "approaching 800"

It's easy to look at what he was in April/May but that's not who he is now.

I'll take his defense and ."715" every day of the week, and play a double-header on Sunday.

Did Mookie lose 2 years to TJS?

moon just gets a little carried away with excitement sometimes.

Well, he has had some torrid streaks in the past. I was hoping he had one at some point. Instead, he's just been consistent as hell since mid May (over 4 months) . He just passed Bogey in second half OPS (.837 to .823).

JBJ has the 3rd best second half OPS on the team (110+ PAs)-- 4th if you count Pearce with his 108 PAs..
