Pablo with 2 home runs today, looks like he's healthy and going to be productive.
It looks like he responded positively to the pressure from Marco Hernandez.

Yes, hopefully redeems himself like Hanley last year.

I put zero faith in ST at bats.

But clearly this March's winner of the Jeff Bailey Award - given to the player who excels in spring training to the point where fans argue he NEEDS to make the opening day roster - might go to Steve Selsky...

Good point.

I think they have already woken up to it, waiting for his defense to catch up to his bat.

Swihart had a flub that he should have been able to handle behind the plate today, if I'm not mistaken. Our line up is 'relentless'. IMO, the stronger defense of Leon and Vazquez is needed more than Swihart's offense right now.

Good point.

He will take some reps at third base according to JF. He's already familiar at 1B. Obviously he can play OF. Looks to me like the 5th OF who can play multiple positions.

I think he played 3B in high school. Gives us another right handed bat off the bench for our corner infielders. I just don't want to see Hanley at first. Let him just hit.

And we already have a left fielder.

I don't necessarily disagree with any of this.

I just think we need to temper our excitement based off of spring training results.

Very encouraging to see Wright go 3 more innings today.

Very encouraging indeed. Porcello, OTOH, not so much.

ST'ing top OPS (23+ ABs)

1.151 Travis

1.079 Hernandez

1.023 Castillo

1.006 Beni

.965 Sandoval

.940 Pedey

.920 Selsky

.900 Moreland

.878 Swihart

.853 Betts

.827 Holt

.804 Ramirez

.801 D Marrero

.689 Craig

.644 JBJ

.444 Brentz

Pretty interesting how the top 5 and 8 of the top 9 were not FT starters on the Sox for all or most of last year. 5 of the top 9 will probably not make the opening day 25 man roster. That is a good sign of our extended depth... I guess.

Did I miss something? Did anyone say that Selsky NEEDS to make the opening day roster? Because in my mind it would be foolhardy to allow Selsky to occupy a spot on the 25 that could be filled by a more established player.

Selsky still needs to prove himself in Pawtucket but he does NEED to be on the 40. If we need someone beyond Young to fill a spot in the OF Selsky should be the first call-up if he's continuing to play well.

Why would it be foolhardy for him to make the roster, who would be the more established player he is taking the roster spot from. He is already 27.

He is not some great prospect, he is a guy they hope can be a quality bat off the bench, with some versatility to play outfield and the infield corners.

There are two older tradable guys on the Sox roster in Holt and Rutledge and 4 guys underneath that could fill those spots and offer a low cost and perhaps better capability. Hernandez looks like an up and comer with a good left handed bat and the ability to play 3rd, short and second. Travis looks like a right handed power bat with good contact who right now can play 1st but might expand his capability soon. Then there are Swihart a switch hitter with flexible positioning and Selsky, possibly a good quality right handed bat with reasonable ability in the outfield.

To me, this situation screams of looking at possible trades to:

1) Improve our bench

2) Lower the salary of our roster

3) Get some trade value out of our aging players

He's on the 40 man already. Wait for the rest, especially if he outplayed Rutledge the rest of the way. ..

They need a platoon for Pablo. Marco hits from the wrong side.

I understand that but I don't think they are going to platoon Pablo. We will see. I think Hernandez might be a better version of Holt.

Holt can play OF though.

How can they keep Hernandez off the team .

Because he has options right! You already know how I feel about this one. All this kid continues to do is hit and play well overall. He is a substantially better baseball player than either Rutledge or Marrero and even though I realize what Holt has meant to us, I would throw him in there as well. He is good enough to start and play either second or short for someone.

Because the GM likes Rutledge.

The manager likes Holt.

Actually the manager has been talking up Holt this spring.

Boston lefthander Drew Pomeranz says today's tricep tightness was "nothing crazy," according to Providence Journal beat reporter Brian MacPherson:

That's why Rutledge will probably start the year on the 25 man roster.

With Selsky looking good, maybe we might look to trade Holt, so Hernandez can join the big club on opening day.

If Hernandez continues to impress, even if he gets sent down for a little while, he will get his chance.

We do not need a 5th starter until April 9. Pom is likely not going to be ready by then, so the thinking is that we might carry an extra position player, namely Hernandez, until that time. Either way, Hernandez will get his chance soon enough.

As far as the #5 pitcher goes, I think Kendrick is currently a better option than Pom.

I understand this but it doesn't make it right. Rutledge really?
