Talk of Moncada being the starting 3rd baseman next year is at least very premature and maybe even foolish.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking.

I'm not one to worry about K's but Trumbo is a lot like Napoli in that way.

He'll be very expensive, but being able to play 1B and LF would help when we face NL teams away.

I think we need to look for a 1-2 year stop-gap 3Bman or corner IF'er.

I think Beni and Young have LF covered better than Shaw/Moncada/Pablo have 3B covered.

I don't like to bring guys back that we parted with for whatever reason, thus my staunch opposition to signing Napoli. Trumbo is definitely an option we should pursue.

We will need a power bat to replace Ortiz. AL East is made up of bangers. We can't completely ignore it.

And if we do win the whole thing, Sox should pursue White Sox starting pitching. They will be rebuilding in my opinion.

He's going to want more years than I'd be willing to give, not to mention huge dollars.

I suppose if we plan on trading Moncada or Beni as part of a big package to upgrade our rotation, then signingTrumbo or EE might make more sense.

Signing one without making a trade effective blocks one of them.

We do lose Young after next year, but everyone else is under control for several more years.

Will Moncada, E Rod and Kopech entice White Sox for Sales?

Maybe.

Maybe something like this instead?

Moncada or Beni

2 from Swihart, Kopech or ERod

Add Holt, Owens or Johnson (Don't give Swihart and Holt.)

No. It is astonishingly rare for a pitcher of Sale's skill level and contract status to change hands.

But we will be trading from strength....we don't really have to do anything. There's some chirping on White Sox end to rebuild. It's also better for them to make a trade with some team control years left on their aces. Otherwise, at some point, teams will wait out for free agency and White Sox get nothing.

Trumbo is a free agent to be. Why not go for him. He is what, 31 and could be an OF/DH for us for years to come. Getting a 40 HR guy and weakening a major competitor would be good to do. Probably cost a bundle but at the same time we could leave Hanley at 1st.

I have been thinking about him for a while now. A very good idea.

As you know, I love me some Moncada. but he is still a prospect. I like shaw and think that he is more than adequate at third base for the time being. Actually i tend to think that he will get better with time. If this team did nothing in the off season but sign that big power bat free agent to replace Papi, I would be fine. I think that they will probably look to trade for pitching but I'm not sure that is a huge pressing need. One thing that we know from past history, John Henry isn't likely to start playing small ball with the purse strings. Good for us!

With parity the way it is, how long does it take for a team to rebuild?

2-3 years?

Sale has 4 years left. Usually when you rebuild you deal away top players with 1-2 years left. I don't understand why any team would trade away a low cost ace with 4 years of control, but it seems like the White Sox will at least look into it this winter.

We should do our due diligence. We should be able to offer a great package, but that doesn't mean we should go way overboard.

Yep, we don't need to do anything....but Wright is hurt, Pomeranz again struggling, we need to kick tires this off season. I'm all for

picking up a top of rotation starter.

I don't get the Trumbo love. He's having one of the least valuable seasons by a 40-homer hitter in MLB history. He doesn't hit for average (.250 career, .250 this year), doesn't get on base (.302 career, .312 this year), and is a terrible defender (-6.1 dWAR career, -1.8 this year). Dude has a 1.3 bb-ref WAR in the middle of a 40-homer season. He's terrible.

Hanley had a .717 OPS last year.

On June 22 of this year his OPS was at that same .717 mark.

Since then his OPS is 1.053.

What a game this is.

I know this: I'm seeing a Hanley now that I didn't even know existed last year at this time. This bat is the one we're paying $22M for and it's finally showed up, just in time!

...and he's going to cost a ton over several years!

His stock is getting higher!

LOL

I don't see them trading HanRam at all.

1) He's been his healthiest since the move to 1B.

2) If he becomes our FT DH after this season, I don't see him getting hurt all that much or at all.

3) His attitude has been great from the beginning and let's not forget that HE's the one that wanted to come to Boston.

4) A rebuilding team looking to trade a TOTR SP (like Sale) won't be looking for a high priced veteran in a deal. They'll want guys like JBJ. Not sure what we can get in return trading HanRam, although the Yanks did rake on trading 2 months of Beltan... but situations are different mid-season compared to the off-season.

You're right that he's had a fluctuating career at the plate, but it might not matter if he hits .881 or 1.040. To me, as our DH middle of the order bat, just give me the RBI. This season, Hanley has already tied his career high in rbi (106, 2009, age 25, .954) w/ an .881 OPS. The Sox, as presently constructed, get on base and I don't see that changing any time soon. I think he's a perfect fit for our team going forward.

So is price, so is porcello...MVP type players get paid good money. Mookie will get paid, Xander will get paid...this is how it works. JH is a billionaire and already has showed he will go over the LT. So if hes not worried about his money why the hell are you? I think he knows what hes doing and can run finances better than you...When we signed him he could have got 5-6 guarenteed years somewhere else at less aav, but we wanted only 4 with a 5th vesting option so we paid a little more. Thats how Henry likes to do things it seems. Pay a little more for less guarenteed years...hes only 32 and is in phenominal shape. I think he will age well the next three years while salaries go sky high. His 22m may look good in three years.

Throw in that Ortiz is retiring, on what planet does it make sense to get rid of him? You are correct, not sure what we'll get in return. He'll finish out his contract as a Sox (3 more years. Last year is vesting based on plate appearances.)

HA! Your right. I guess with all Moons plattoning ideas for hanley and all that i just assumed it was him.

My bad...
