Did you see the pictures of Theo wearing a fake mustache at Wrigley Field? I guess he was trying to disguise himself so that he wouldn't be recognized.

If you know your history, Theo's never been above a bit of creative cosplay.

LOL.

God love ya Kimmi.

Nearly every team Theo ever managed as a GM or team President has been well above average, and teams he assembled (or mostly assembled) have won the World Series at least twice, three times if you give him credit for assembling the lion's share of the 2013 core.

Even remembering that he's always had a big budget to work with, it's fair to give Theo a lot of props as a baseball mind. Especially since we're in a position to know the difference, and have learned (hopefully) that a GM can't always spend their way to high level performances in the baseball standing.

Well, Texas and the Sox were rated at the top at the start of the ALDS, probably based on their records and potent offenses. Texas just was swept in large part due to weak starting pitching. The Sox have also lost two with weak performances from their starters. Kind of points to the need to have improved pitching. In our case, we chose a bad time to have our hitting also go downhill, but some of that is due to the improved pitching seen in the playoffs. There will be a competitive market for such starters who might become available through Trades next year.

Another reason we were rated so highly was because we had the top second half SP'er WAR and ERA- in MLB. The last few games of the season usually do not over-ride 3 months of great starting pitching.

Our offense did not have as great a second half, but was still ranked highly.

If you give Theo the "lion's share" for 2013, maybe Dan D gets the lion's share for 2004.

Duke should gets a lot of credit, to be honest.

Dude's a baseball genius. Overpaid, but still a genius.

if the cubs win it all. theo should go down as the greatest GM of all time. not even close.

Theo gets a half-share for 2013. Duquette gets a half-share for 2004. Everybody gets something, Theo still has 2.0 titles.

Dan gets his share of the credit for 2004.

FTR, Theo gets a great deal of credit for the Sox for this year. His acquired players are responsible for more team WAR than either Ben's or Dave's. Ben gets credit for not trading away some of Theo's draftees.

Dombrowski is getting a lot of credit by most for putting the Sox back into the playoffs, but really, the team was already mostly there. Henry and the fans just needed to be a bit more patient.

Absolutely. IMO, he's the GOAT even if the Cubs don't win it all.

Its over now as we were swept by Cleveland. It was good to see some fight from the guys during this game and at the end. At the end of the day, the pitching needs to hold the opponents down since playoff pitching often means low scoring games. We couldn't do that even though the BP did it's job pretty well. Sorry to see Ortiz go out this early as he has been one of the greatest Sox player.

What was interesting is several of the guys in deep slumps got meaningful at bats tonight. Maybe they can come away from this with a good feeling of possibility for 1017. There is a good nucleus here and DD is likely to be aggressive to fill some of the weak spots.

It's sad that this team was so pathetic that they let Papi go out like this. I thought it from opening day, and have rarely said anything else, and have posted threads about it on this site: this team is not a champion, they do not have what it takes like the '13 team did. They were done before they even started. I suspected it all along, but the moment I really knew it was when Kimbrel blew that save in New York. That was the final red flag that this is a team of pretenders with plastic numbers that meant very little because other than the winning streak, they almost never came back late in the game. And, in all honesty, not believing they had it, I'd rather see them go out as soon as possible or not make it at all. I'm not one of those fans who says they'd love to see their team in the World Series even if they lose. No way, win it all or go home, and not from day one have I thought this team would win it all. What really bothers me is that we will never see Papi again, and it's like these guys either didn't care, or cared so much that they were unable to focus on doing what it takes, bad both ways. They were an inconsistent team with no real cohesive identity who showed occasional signs of cohesion--just enough to torment you. Like I said, always suspected as much, but knew it in NY, and my Kimbrel and Price thread proves it. Mostly I feel bad for Papi, he's a true champion and will be missed. It will never be the same without him. Edited by Examiner

Boo f***ing hoo.

Papi is gone.

Yaz is gone too. I got over that and I'll get over this. The Sox are loaded with great young players that have not approached their peak. With some good move this off-season by Mr. Leisure Suit, this team will remain competitive each year for the foreseeable future.

Tough way to go out.

We had so many chances.

It's hard to not let three games dominate how we feel right now, but this team fought hard to the end.

At least I feel better about our future now than I did last winter.

It was a terrific season. Farrell did fine - considering the Sox game plan was built around their top 2 starters at least being durable - not a lot you can do.

It's a good experience for the kids. I am bummed though - only natural.

Good year. Beat by a better team in the end. They can't all be our year. Just means DD won't rest on his laurels in the offseason.

I 100% blame our quick exit to the Papi Retirement Tour effect. 100%. way too much focus on 1 man the final week of the season. honestly way too much focus on 1 man the entire season. i 100% think David Ortiz is the Greatest Red Sox Player of all time. i also think David Ortiz was 100% selfish having a retirement tour and not waiting until after the season ends to announce the end of his playing career.

best of luck in your after baseball life Papi. but you and i both know that your retirement tour cost the 2016 Red Sox. big league.

i 100% believe the David Price contract will be an albatross the next 6 seasons. Eff Price. he is exactly who i thought he was.

I don't know how you can conclude this when he had an awesome season and we won 93 games and the division (both better than expected).

How does that have ANYTHING to do with him saying that he'd retire at the end of the season? Did that prevent the rest of the team from hitting in the postseason too?

yes. 100%. "retirement tours" are a team distraction. for the entire team. and if you dont think that you have to be 110% focused on baseball and baseball only to succeed when it matters most then of course you dont agree.

I thought Price would be better than this, and I was still against the signing.

Let's hope he's like Beckett, who took a year to "adjust" before bringing us a ring.

Winning a ring might be difficult without Papi. It hasn't been done for a century.

A great season. We saw a lot of growth from some players that should play key roles going froward. A couple of my random thoughts are that home field sure as hell does make a difference. Cleveland more than proved it. The playoff atmosphere is super charged. It really is nothing like the regular season. These players aren't robots and the games are not decided on their acquired yearly statistics. Once again, it isn't strat-o-matic baseball. Also, many have you have been very adamant that it is about the pitching. You are right. I totally expect that someone will be added to our starting rotation which wasn't all that bad throughout the course of the regular season. Personally, it is about the slow steady march to be in a position to play meaning full baseball in October. This was an enjoyable experience.
