Well, I guess we won't get our preview tonight. General Farrell will stick to protocol (again) and make him sweat for a day or so. Dumbest psychological move he could make! Where does he get these golden rules, anyway?

Hardly dumb and its done by a LOT of managers. Hes not sweating. That's silly man.

Let him sit, watch, and learn for a day. Ask questions. See how fast the MLB game moves. There is absolutely nothing dumb about doing this. They did it with Benni too.

Its common practice.

I don't disagree, but now this forces JF into another of his favorite rituals- sitting a player right after a huge game or during a red-hot streak. I suppose they could start Shaw at 1B, but HanRam is hot too. I suppose they could rest Papi or Pedey, but we have to play our best players so soon after a day off.

So, we sit Shaw after one of his best games in months.

I'm not saying we shouldn't in this case, but it just seems like this happens so often on this club.

I like Shaw. I think he's a good player. He has a role on this team. He's been struggling. We always fall for that same old trap, he had a great game last night. Let's put him in there tonight, he's ready to roll.

Let's keep in mind the A's starter Triggs left the game with some type of issue. That could have triggered Shaw's big night.

I'm happy he had a big night, believe me. In another analogy momentum in baseball is the next day starting pitcher.

Shaw/ Hill/ Moncada could rotate. If Yoan Moncada hits... He plays.

I agree........At some point in 2017, I'm hoping sooner rather than later, Benintendi, Bradley, Betts, Bogaerts and Boncada will all be in the starting line up. Looking forward to it.

You stole my "Boncada" nickname!

Maybe Bomb-cada would be better.

i'm a big fan of this kid obviously. Everything that I have read about him says that he is a good one. A good person as well as a potentially great player someday. Not necessarily what we have seen coming out of Cuba. We are going to all be very happy that he is a Red Sox and not a Yankee!

Good start for the kid. They brought him up at the right time. Lets get a look at what he can do.

What has surprised me and it's only been two games is Moncada's arm. He has a cannon when he sets. I remember Beltre in that one year here , that had an arm like that. He slings it across like its nothing.

Interesting that you would bring up Beltre here. I've been thinking for a long time that if Beltre had had his collision with Moncada and not Ellsbury, it might not have been quite as catastrophic for us as it was. I get the fact that he can still get injured but I like his size and strength. there is nothing that looks fragile about him.

I agree. I don't understand why you would have a guy with an arm like that playing 2nd.

He will play for league minimum for 2017, 2018, 2019 and become arbitration eligible starting in 2020? I realize $60M went out of John Henry's pocket but it's a great pickup especially having him for six more years under team control.

$60 million is $60 million. It is a lot of dough for a kid that spent parts of 2 years in the minor leagues. It is not like he was a great find by the organization. Everyone knew about the guy. The Red Sox simply decided to break the bank for a 19 year old, paying $10 million less for the 19 year old than they offered Lester for 4 years. Let's not be patting the FO on the back for its great business acumen. I love having the kid, but we paid a steep price to get him.
Posted
So you would have preferred they don't break the bank for a premium, sure-as-it-gets type young player?
I said that I am glad that we got him. I wouldn't be surprised if they outbid the field by $5 to 10 million. They just suck at gauging market value imo.
Posted
They did not. Remember they ended up paying 60 million because of the tax penalty. The 30 million of the actual offer didn't blow the other teams out of the water.

2 for 5, 2 runs scored and an RBI. His first hit was an RBI double. Quite a promising first major league start for Moncada!

The Red Sox are truly stacked with fine young talent.

It's an embarrassment of riches.

I have no worries about our offense, what worries me is will our pitching hold up?

So far Price and Porcello looked very good against the A's.

Then again A's dwell in the basement of the AL West, so there's a good reason we're looking so good against them.

Eduardo Rodriguez gets the start tonight. Hopefully he gives us a strong outing.

The great news is that we are now tied for 1st in the AL East!

Let's ride this streak out a little longer. The bats are hot, the pitching just needs to be average-above average!

Let's go Sox!

Dude who cares how much the team paid? Is it your money? It was obviously a wise investment. The Red Sox have a superstar in the making on their hands.

And the crazy thing is that they are ADDING Moncada on top of the already great young talent they have in Betts, Bradley, Bogaerts, Benitendi, etc.

I'm looking forward to seeing this team grow together. This is the MOST TALENTED team I've seen the Red Sox field in like... EVER!

Moncada looks like the real deal so far. I'm hoping he can continue to contribute down the stretch and we get to see more of him.

Posted
Do we know that as a fact?

The Yankees' offer was reportedly 25 mill, and they were the third bidder, per reports. So there was another offer that was pretty close to the Sox.

We are engaging in (what I deem to be) some interesting Red Sox baseball discussion in this, a Red Sox baseball discussion site. Analysis of the effectiveness of this FO's spending habits is welcome discussion IMO.

Yep....this is a fan forum about the Red Sox...I'm 60 years old and I still get excited about the Sox.....

I am thrilled to have the kid, and I don't care how much money they spent on him, but throwing kudos at a FO for business acumen for throwing money around and overpaying is another issue. If that is the standard, then the Yankee FO up until a couple of years ago must have been the smartest FO of all time.

But we overbid the Yankees by 20%, and the other offer might have been $26 million. I realize that this is pennies to the Red Sox. My main point is that they were willing to spend $60+ million on this kid, but offered Lester ony $70 million. That just strikes me as stupid.

We'll never know exactly what happened with the Lester negotiations. What we do know is that they are stand-alone moves, and as stupid as the Lester offer was, the Moncada signing has the makings of an excellent acquisition.

You just have to shake your head. Sometimes they can be so rigidly and unreasonably cheap and other times they spend like drunken sailors like with Price and Carl Crawford.

Lester and Moncada are completely different issues.

Lester is a talent retention call. Moncada is a talent recruitment call.

Red Sox didn't feel that Lester was worth top dollar. IE he's not worth paying as an ace.

They gave him an insulting offer and ended up losing him.

So... they went out and offered real ace money to David Price.

Could we use Jon Lester right now? Probably. But if Lester is still a Red Sox, chances are David Price is not. Opportunity cost.

Honestly I'm more disappointed in the money we blew on Rusney Castillo and Pablo Sandoval than the Price vs Lester decision.

Paying more for an arguably better quality pitcher is fine.

However I'm not sure I see any way we can unload Castillo or Pandoval without taking serious monetary losses.
