I guess because he's our only major pitching prospect above the age of 17.

Groome is already ranked higher at the Soxprospects Ledger.

You didn't answer my question.

Did you imply you would not trade Swihart, Devers, Owens and Johnson for Sale? I would without blinking. The CWS would laugh at that offer.

I would worry that Sale is a bit of a head case and might not add as much to the team as another strong young pitcher, while the price would be high. You name 4 potential trade offerings. Of those, I would be most unhappy about losing Swihart, the others, not so much although Devers has a lot of potential.

What I mean is, after trading Espinoza, DD wants to hang onto our 2 other pitching prospects.

Devers has a chance to be better than Moncada (can't hit righthanded) and Benintendi (small, not overly athletic).

I wouldn't bet against this but I do think that Moncada is going hit both lefties and righties . i'm more concerned with him not being able to field a position. Or maybe even to find a position.

From what I have heard, Benintendi is athletic and fast. He is really thought of as a center fielder, which requires speed. His weakest category is his arm. I still like him a lot and think he is a piece we need to add to our outfield as an every day player and depth. I would be very reluctant to trade him.

At worst, he's thrown into LF or 1B. We'll have to see if he's serviceable at 3B next year.

if they decide keep Devers as well, something is going to have to give. It is conceiveable that Devers winds up a first to.

Try and unload price, Kimbrel, hanram.

Someone needed to say it....

I was thinking along the same lines actually. But first I'd implement plan "k knuckle ball". This would mean that anyone pitching in AAA ball or lower should stop what they are doing and start learning to throw a knuckle ball........ to prepare for the future....

It appears Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy will be dealt before Monday’s deadline and apparently the Red Sox are in the mix.

According to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick, the Red Sox are among several teams in the mix for the catcher. Other teams mentioned are the Rangers, Guardians, Astros, Mets and a mystery team.

Lucroy is 30 years old and has a $5.25 million team option for next year. The right-handed hitter is batting .301 with an on-base percentage of .362 this season.

The Red Sox currently have Ryan Hanigan and Sandy Leon as their catchers on the 25-man roster, with Christian Vazquez in Triple-A and Blake Swihart seemingly not seeing time behind the plate again this season.

Red Sox catchers are hitting .251, which is fourth in the American League.

His bat would be a nice addition.

I love Swihart too, but we are stacked at the catching position and Swihart's value is higher as a catcher for another team than as a LF'er fighting for time with Young and eventually Benintendi for the Sox. His value is high, but unlike Moncada and Beni, his skills in LF are not that high.

I also love Devers. He's red hot right now. I wouldn't trade these two for squat. I wouldn't trade these two for a rental or even a 2 year wonder.

I'd prefer 4+ years of Quintana, but getting 3+ years of Sale could help us not only win this year, but also long into the future.

Matt Moore would be a nice gamble- maybe more for 2017 and beyond than this year.

His stock maybe be bottomed out, and that can be a great time to pick him up.

At this point in time, Swihart's ability to play left field in Fenway is a long ways away from that of Moncada's. We really haven't been given any indication that the sox are even thinking about moving Moncada to the outfield. As for Benintendi, you get to decide as a fan. My choice right now would be Swihart.

We have one of, if not the best offense. We dont NEED his bat. It would be nice, sure. But at what cost. Doesnt ,make sense to me.

It will be interesting to see what the team prioritizes between now and Monday... we've heard rumors about adding another SP, another good RP, or possibly a catcher (Lucroy), but I don't think anyone thinks we'll do all three, or even two out of the three (unless we want to seriously deplete our depth).

So my question, TalkSox crowd, is.... If we only could make one significant move before the deadline, what would you like to see?

Like Moonslav, I would like Quintana as a stater for now and into the future. To realistically have a chance to get him, we would have to give up some of our highly valued prospects and/or a current major league player (thinking a catcher). We need to be mindful of where we will need improvements going forward. One outfielder, first/third base, designated hitter. We have Benintendi, Moncada, Swihart and Devers to potentially fill those holes. Which of those would we have to throw in? I question Hanley's value to the team going forward as his performance runs hot and cold. His contract will probably keep him in a Sox uniform for one more year.

For me it's some bullpen help. I think the rotation is going to be fine, plus adding something there would be both too expensive and not a guarantee as we've seen with Price.

Trade Pedroia and Holt for some young pitching. Bring up Moncada and the Italian kid. Rest Big Papi about half the time. Make the middle of the line-up read Betts-Bradley-Boegarts. Any order you want as long as it's right-left-right. (Right now, opposing managers are drooling, late in the game) when they see right right right, then left left left. That makes it real easy to get people warmed up. Give the 40,000 people who show up every day something to cheer about. Get a pitching coach. Get a manager whos is not a "nice guy".

I like Lucroy's bat. And his pitch framing is above average. But do we really need him with the way Sandy Leon is swinging the bat at the plate and playing defensively? Basically we just need a healthy Leon, and Wright's knuckleball catcher.

If we're not paying a lot, well Lucroy would be a nice pickup, but not worth giving up top shelf prospects imo. I think other teams will pay more.

What the emergence of Sandy Leon does, is it makes giving up a Vazquez or a Swihart palatable for the Red Sox. I believe we need pitching help the most -- one more quality bullpen arm, and maybe a starter. I don't know if we would be willing to sacrifice to obtain Chris Sale or Quintana. Are there any other quality arms available that wouldn't cost us Benitendi or Moncada??

Panic much? Red Sox are still in good shape to make the postseason. They just played badly against the Tigers. There's too much talent not to believe they won't bounce back and resume their winning ways.

Red Sox should be buyers at the trade deadline.

Rest Papi half the time...now what the heck does that accomplish...especially as far as giving people something to cheer about.
