The Dodgers, like Boston, has the prospect firepower to get a Chris Sale deal completed -- but they would need to ante up to make it happen.

yup...a guy like sale...man if we could get him...we would have him for what 3 years...and price will come around..pitchers for some reason have a hard time in boston their 1st year.

3 more years after this, so basically 4 playoff cycles.

Quintana has 5, so I think I'd rather have him, but the more I think about it, the more I realize these types of chances don't come along that often. I'm still against trading a package headed by Moncada for him, but I'm more willing to trade a large package of our next best prospects.

Benintendi, Swihart and Devers?

ERod, Swihart and Devers?

Swihart, Devers, Kopech and Lakins?

ERod, Swihart, Devers and Kopech?

I'm not sure any of these will get the CWS to say yes, and I'm not even sure I'd offer all of these combinations, but it's close.

If we offer Moncada, I wouldn't like it, and I'd hope we wouldn't give much of anything else... I guess maybe Moncada, Lakins and Owens wouldn't get me too upset.

Last night we put a weakened lineup on the field. If you trade for an ace and deplete the minors what good would it do? Maybe win another few games this year. Even an ace might not win with only two runs support, as Price didn't with his fine game just two days ago. With Ortiz out of the lineup, most of the run production had to be generated by Betts, Pedroia, Bogaerts. Rameriz is hit and miss so to speak. Beyond that you have to look at Leon to do anything. Ortiz will have to sit fairly often going down the stretch, afterall, he is 40 and not superhuman.

Maybe it's time to bring up some enthusiastic young players to give us energy and a different outlook. Could they do worse than Brentz, Hill and even Shaw? The time is here for a change before we do something stupid and trade away the brightest part of our future.

We need to re-energize this team and stop kidding ourselves. The team looks tired and on the downward track.

The offense is just in a rut. They are still one of the best offenses in the league so you really cant say what good would it do to get an ace when most of us realize that this offense will come back around.

You cant keep all the kids. Thats not how you run a team unless your the rays or A's...You identify the ones you would have to be blown away in a trade to let go and the ones that you feel are still valuable, but somewhat expendable.

With that said, I dont see Sale coming to Boston. The asking price is utterly ridiculous. Price is coming around, and Porcello has pretty much been our "Ace" so far. I dont trust a flutterballer in the playoffs. ERod staying consistent is another concern. We most certainly need another starter, but with what teams are asking for im not sure its worth it. If no other teams bite them maybe the price will come down a bit...Sales delivery scares me anyway.

Sox had the luxury of hitting Bradley 7-9 early in the year and driving in runs. Now there's a black hole in bottom of our batting order. By resting Papi, Sox trots out sub 200 guy in Hill, swing and miss king Brycee baby in left, bat .200 vs lefty hitter in Shaw, and bat singles hitter Hanley as DH.

I don't care how many runs we score, we don't put fear in a pitch that Toronto hitters do.

We need home run productions out of corner positions. Other than Betts, we are solely lacking in power department.

If you have chance to improve the team, you do it. Aaron Hill simply has not earned the respect from his teammates.

And I rather see a true outfielder than bunch of utility players disguising as an OF.

we have seen regression in Sale this season. still elite, but is it a start and will it continue?

I am in favor of running Pommeranz and ERod out every 5th day. both are on the cusp and need to pitch in the heat of battle.

I have to think running out Betts, Bogey, Bradley and Moncada every day is the core of a great offense. compliment that with a still able PD, Shaw (40-45 doubles?) and maybe Travis or Devers (in 2 years) this offense is built to last

Totally agree. Our pitching lately has been good enough to win. We need to solidify that other corner outfield slot..

Going forward, I think they have 3 issues - left fielder, starting pitcher, dh. I'm not nuts about them being able to solve any of those issues from within. Possibly left field and that's it. Obviously the bullpen always needs tinkering but if an when Smith gets back things will seem much better out there.

This is a setback for the Guardians.

I wonder why? Said that he wanted to go to a team that could win. Maybe it is a mid-western thing. A kick right in the royal rump I'd call it.

If the Red Sox made a good offer and it is still on the table, the Red Sox are not on his no-trade list.

Read that as a concession to waive the no-trade, he wanted the Guardians to tear up the 2017 club option in his contract (which would now allow him to become a free agent adfter this year). The Guardians said no for obvious reasons.

If they still want him, they are going to have to part with major $ upfront.

Yankees got a nice couple of prospects for miller.

Based on the proposed trade between Guardians and Brewers, what would be a comparable trade value for Lucroy to the Sox? Can it be done with Sandy and slew of second tier prospects? Or do we have to throw in Swihart as a piece?

He would be an upgrade for the Sox.

I think that he is without a doubt the best prospect in our system. I would hate to see him traded. That being said, I think that our prospects tend to be over-rated.

I forget where I read this, but I saw a comparison to the average WAR for top 100 prospects, tiered 1-10 11-25 and so forth. The average of all our prospects easily beat the average, and every other teams as well. I'll try to find the article, but it suggests that if anything our prospects are undervalued.

Last time I checked Hill is batting .268 with a .745 OPS. Not great, but not bad either. He's also not a starter or a stud on this team he's a platoon player. I agree with southpaw the offense is fine and just in a rut. If you look at any team, even a world series champion you'll see stretches where they lose, even to horrible teams at times. If this team picks it back up and gets hot it will win....even if the competition is tough.

The long term problem has been and remains pitching on this team. I don't buy your "we don't put the fear in a pitcher[er] that Toronto hitters do"

Good.....I would love other teams to not respect this offense, they will probably continue to put up great numbers overall if they do.

I'm good with Lucroy, the price for admission this trade deadline is just absolutely 100% insane and the offense is great + we have good defensive catchers here now so it's really a luxury at this point.

They had four prospects on Baseball America's midseason top 100 list, then added the #21, #24, and #69 prospects via the Chapman and Miller trades... suddenly that's a very nice system. They're doing what the Red Sox should have done in the 2014 selloff, which is kind of disgusting.

That and they have a lot of money coming off the books soon as well. We should enjoy the suck while it lasts.

I think our pitching is coming around a tad bit although not peak for sure. One big prob. also is having fill in guys like Brenz and Hannigan and a few others. Brenz looked at 2 called 3rd strikes, bases jacked. Having injuries to Swihart and Young not helping. We might have a better idea of what kind of hitter Swihart might be by now if he didn't get hurt. Tough call right now on who to move. If I could lock up Lucroy for 3 to 4 yrs, I'd give up Swihart for sure, but our future is real bright.

Nobody is going to fully replace Papi at DH, but out of 1b/3B/LF we should be able to find a plus DH: Moncada, HanRam, Shaw, Sandoval, Young, Travis (LF? Benintendi/ Holt), (3B? Hernandez/ Rutledge)

SP'er should be our number one focus.

I agree that Encarnacion would be a nice pick-up, but his cost may lessen our chances at adding SP'ers to our roster.
