What the Yankees did with ARod and his bonuses was justified. The bonuses were marketing bonuses and they can't market anything if it's falsely obtained. Their compromise was a good one, i.e. Money goes to charity

Well, I think I disagree with that--the bonuses were small potatoes. My point was that they seemed to be trying to do more than that: humiliate him into retirement, which would have saved them millions. I became an overnight Arod fan.

It's a pretty slimy way to treat someone who won you a WS, imo.

If the guy played up to his contract, he'd have more than one ring

He played up to his contract in Texas and got no rings there. It takes more than one person to get there. However, without ARod, they don't win that last one.

It's still a ******** excuse to not pay the guy, but what else do you expect from a shady organization like that. Just look at the nonsense they spewed about the ticket exchange and how they don't want newbies in prime seats. Gross.

Pablo has no "shoulder sprain". When he eventually makes it back I think he will have lost about 15 pounds, at least. He has been sent off to fat camp, something he should have done during the winter.

SAndoval has just been put on the DL with a "shoulder sprain"(in reality a Belt Subluxation) Rutledge called up. Pablo will also be put on a conditioning program.

Don't care why he's on the DL, just glad he is!!

Broken belt Syndrome!!!

Not unexpected that they would DL him.

What a surprise! Panda to the DL. What a waste of $95 million. I wouldn't have paid this fat f*ck $10, let alone the damned millions they wasted on him. Just yet another reason they need to adopt contracts with less guaranteed money so if you start to suck/show up out of shape your ass is cut. Ben must have been smoking some strooooooooong s*** when he signed that nightmare contract.

I still don't get why they didn't have SOME sort of weight clause in there. I mean, if he was unwilling to sign a contract that stipulated that he kept in shape... that should have been a MAJOR red flag. How the hell do dish out that money to someone who won't agree to stay in shape...

In a tough spot, trying to make the best of it? He's getting paid $75 million as a professional athlete and he shows up overweight and completely useless. How is this a 'tough spot' and how exactly is he 'trying to make the best of it'? Trying to make the best of it... is not showing up to spring training grossly overweight. It's not like he accidentally fell into a silo at Ben & Jerry's and had to eat his way out to survive. The dude shows NO RESPECT to the game, his teammates, or employers. $75 million and you can't even stay in even marginal shape?

He's a disgrace to every single real athlete out there. Disgrace. He deserves all the hate he is getting. The Red Sox have a huge chunk of dead money sitting around because of his useless, pathetic, fat ass. (Now the Red Sox were complete idiots for signing this clown, but this "Panda's trying! Leave Panda Alone" BS is puke-worthy. The guys is laughing at us as he continues to stuff his face)

This is exactly how I feel as well. Poor Panda my ass, he brought all of this on himself. To show up like he did following his disasterous first year completely unapologetic did in fact show a total disrespect to the team, the fans and the game.

He's getting $95 mil over the life of his deal to be a professional athlete. There are some plump baseball players, but there aren't any plump third basemen in the game today. With a heightened focus on defense in analytics, being athletic is required for most every position except DH and at times 1b. The fact that he thought he could continue his eating habits into his thirties is also distressing. You can eat like a house in your 20s and work out and that's usually enough. Into your thirties, the weight sticks more. This is a phantom DL stint that I think lasts a lot longer than 15 days. He'll be out for 30 at least and if he doesn't come back 20-30 pounds lighter, he'll be buried in some hole in the Ft Myers complex

The only problem with this is he hasn't yet "carried his eating habits into his thirties".

He's 29.

I don't know what his issue is and unlike most people, I wont presume to know, but he definitely needs hepl of some kind.

Whatever he's doing on his own, as far as conditioning goes, isn't working.

I agree that if the Sox throw all their resources at him and his condition doesn't improve, he's not going to see a ML field this year.

What is particularly distressing is the fact that Sandoval isn't the only bum bloated contract the Red Sox have. It will take some time to rid the club of them.

It's easy to blame Pablo and Ben, but I also have to give current management for a large share of blame for not watching over him more this offseason.

I'll hijack this Pablo thread a bit... It is glaring what a disastrous signing Pablo has been, how terrible of a job he did in the off-season, and how unprepared he was to play. At the same time what an amazing job Hanley has done this off-season. He truly seems to have put some work in, wants to make up for last year, and is playing great offense and defense. Good for Hanley.

Pablo needs to follow Tony Horton like Eddy Lacy did. That dude looks like a house

He was supposed to this offseason, but there was miscommunication and he followed Tim Hortons instead.

At least the other bad contracts are doing what they can. Porcello isn't a bum, he's just overpaid. Hanley was put in a bad spot last year and may have been hurt. No such excuse for Pablo.

Rusney is the other albatross candidate.

Got to hand it to Hanley. He is getting it done and has become fun to watch.

Of course the f***ing lunkhead can still screw it up. I hope not.

I doubt that Pablo plays again in Boston. Not as a starter, that is. If that happens it's because Shore or Hanley has or is f***ed up. That would suck.

Sox will need to eat this one, I'm afraid.

He has had his chances and he f***ing blew it.

By the way, I believe it was that last time Pablo was at 3rd base. After a play he was rubbing his left shoulder. I was wondering what would come of that!

Except he's now stashed in AAA with Craig. No big deal. It's a bigger deal when you have Pablo sitting on the MLB bench and unable to contribute.

Pablo to DL, gives FO 15 days to figure out what to do with Panda. Rusney to AAA. Needs to play to find his swing. Yes it is beginning to look like both are albatross contracts.

How does it give them just 15 days? That's not how the DL works. They have as long as it takes (and Panda is willing to stay down) to get his ass into playing shape.

I know there are some sort of "legit medical" reasons they have to nominally prove i guess if it came down to it (union would surely file a grievance if he is on the DL forever without merit) ... but you take the DL stink, add a 30 day rehab assignment. This probably gives them 1-2 months of cover without poking the (union) bear.

Yeah, maybe 2% of the fault lies with current management, and 98% lies with Sandoval himself. I suspect he was told to lose some weight and show up in shape and that Farrell, assuming he did as he was told, told the press he had lost 20 lbs before even seeing him. Meanwhile, Sandoval probably weights more than he did last year. Its particularly noticeable when you look at the other main guy Cherington obtained, Hanley Ramirez, and see someone who has busted his butt to get in shape and to be as good as he can at his new position. He has worked as hard by all accounts as anyone on the team learning to play 1B under Butterfield and even changed his swing to hit the ball to RF more this year after trying to hit everything over the LF wall last year. Kudos to Hanley Ramirez; shame on Pablo Sandoval. He is on his way out but before he leaves he deserves to be embarrassed a bit the same way he embarrassed the franchise by showing up looking like a wild boar.

Rusney was never given the chance to play regularly. He was given only 289 PAs in 2015 and just four this year. Thats still not a lot. I would have liked to see more of him (and less of Chris Young) before I throw him out the window.
