Great news. Let's hope we can DL him for the season. Have some season ending surgery. GET HIM THE HELL AWAY FROM THE TEAM! Then rehab him, trim him down!!!!! & convince some dimwitted, BC like minded GM that he still has that "big game" cache' & unload him. NO TRADE! straight up cash. See if somebody bites on paying 3/ 4 of his contract on the last 3 years.. Maybe 15 mil / yr, 3 yrs.

Pablo is 29, and hasn't missed significant games at any point in his career. I would not be surprised if the Red Sox have insurance on him.

 

Hopefully that money will come to good use at the deadline.

Sell high. He's typically injured. Get a young pitcher with top of the rotation material. Majority of Sox prospects are infielders so there is sufficient depth.

p.s. I guess I get the "trade high" move, but Pedey is too integral part of this team. I don't know about you, but once Papi & Pedey are gone it's going to be a very sad day.

It's almost assuredly going to be "dead money": there's no way rehabbing from shoulder surgery he's going to get himself in shape, and by next spring, he should look even worse than he does now. Anyone who thinks another team will take him off Boston's hands by paying 3/4 of his contract (or was that a joke?) is delusional.

That's the thing -- he may. It would require a sea change in his personality but people are capable of such things.

There's a silver lining to this.

 

I believe players on the 60 day DL don't count against the luxury tax. I know they didn't used to. So now we have some unexpected cap space for a player we weren't intending to use much anyway. It's honestly a better deal than we could have got in trade at the moment..

A man with his mass hits the ground with great force. Obviously the earth can absorb much of that energy.

 

The structure of his shoulder can not do this quite as well.

 

It's easy to see how he could have sustained that injury by watching one of his last games when he went thud.

I have a question that has occurred to me previously, which I have never actually asked before: What is the reasoning behind harping on Sandoval's weight? I mean, yeah, the only reason the IAU declassified Pluto as a planet was so they could elevate Sandoval, but what is the point of consistently pressing the suggestion that he lose weight? He was hitting terribly last season. Does anyone think that being slimmer will suddenly turn him into a force at the plate? Hitting is mostly about hand-eye coordination and strength, and as we all know, there have been plenty of fat baseball players who were excellent hitters. Prince Fielder springs to mind. Hell, Big Papi is much closer to Sandoval's physique than he is to Brock Holt's.
