I think the key piece here is the "right now" thing. For this year, I think that they have enough there to fill in for both or either Castillo or JBJ. Young - Holt. I hope that they do start moving a player like Shaw around a bit. the power in his bat could be very useful wherever he plays. I also hope that they move Moncada just a bit. Everything that I have read about him seems to indicate that he is for real but he may not be our second baseman going forward. they need to find a place for him fairly soon. Moncada and Benintendi both might be the better options going forward than either Castillo or JBJ . Thank you Ben (sorry- couldn't resist)

A platoon of JBJ and Young since JBJ isn't everyday material atm.

JBJ was everyday material for his stint in 2015. He had a 2.4 fWAR in 66 starts, 74 games.

I don't think the power for JBJ is real. At the same time, his numbers reflected a return to the approach which made him rise up through the minors. A .330 OBP with at least some of the power he showed last season will be plenty for a starter with that glove. Right now offensively he shapes up to be a Mike Napoli sort - where the hot stretches are on fire and the slumps look bad, but there is enough batting eye to not be totally useless.

If JBJ is platooned, then he can't be your CFer. It'd be really upsetting to the young stud, Betts, to move him from RF to CF so often. And Chris Young is no longer a reasonable CFer defensively.

JBJ will be the everyday starting CF, and IMO, his hitting will have to be atrocious for him to be supplanted.

Mookie will not be regularly moving between right and center.

It isn't unreasonable to imagine JBJ saving a hit every 3-4 games, is it? (He seemed to do at least that well last year.) And since saving a hit in the OF is equivalent to getting one at the plate (is it not?) he would have to be a horrendous hitter to justify leaving him on the bench.

I'd say he needs to put up a minimum OPS of say .690 to be a plus player on an everyday basis.

Sox signed David Murphy to minor league deal.
That is surprising. He's not too old and he has always been a solid player.

In 2007 he was in Red Sox MLB Spring Training camp and would play at the end of games. He came to bat in the 7th or 8th and I asked my son if he would take a bet -- I would give 10 to 1 odds that the kid would hit a first pitch Home Run. My son thought it was a lock and bet me a big dollar. Murphy blasted the first pitch for a homerun. The Sox turned over the lineup, and Murphy came up again and we made the same bet but for $10. My recollection is that he swung at the first pitch, but no home run. I'll have to ask my son if I remember that correctly.

JBJ to CF and Mookie to RF is the dumbest idea I have heard in a long time. Looking at things within the context of this team it makes no sense whatsoever. One of the best things the Royals had and have going for them is a team tailored to the place they play 81 games. We seem to want to fight that for some reason....dumb.

With the amount of money the Sox have, they should be willing to grab as many vets to stash in AAA that they can. Smart move considering their lack of OF depth to begin with.

Murphy is a good guy to grab and stash, but I suspect he'll have an out clause of some kind, it's pretty standard for a player who has maybe enough talent to catch on somewhere else. I'm actually surprised he didn't pick up a 5th OF gig somewhere.

I forgot that they have Boesch too. DD likes to have a safety net.

7:17pm: The signing has been announced by the Red Sox. Murphy will have an opt-out at the end of the spring, Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald tweets.

10:35am: Murphy’s minor league deal contains a $2MM base salary, should he make the big league roster, according to the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier (Twitter link).

It was useful for Murphy to get into a camp where he has at least a chance to make it (because he is left handed and there is not tons of evidence that Castillo can hit), and just play. Obviously if a team was going to give Murphy a guaranteed deal he would have taken it.

All I know is that it's nice to have a Sox-killer on our side for once, even if he won't stay long.

Murphy talked about how shocked he was at the lack of major league offers for him. He said that he talked to several teams, but there was nothing concrete. This deal makes sense for Murphy because it was the best offer he received.

A platoon of Holt, Castillo, and Young in LF? That couldn't possible be a bad thing for you guys, right?

Jim Rice, Carl Yastrzemski, Ted Williams and Manny Ramirez are not walking through that door.

Daniel Nava/Mike Carp seemed to work out

Maybe Castillo will get traded. Goodness, Ben threw away $72 million on Castillo, $88 million on Pablo (very cheap by the pound), $82 million on Porcello (a #4/5 starter) and $90 Ramirez (a DH in Waiting). That is a lot of wasted dough!
