Castillo's stock seems to have gone the proverbial drain. Something I missed here or what? never been a big fan but this seems like an odd move.

I'm not sure that it's odd. But it seems to be unexplained.

It seems like a very strange move to me thus the word odd. what have they seen from Castillo this spring to warrant using Holt and Young in left with Castillo out there as well. Holt has always seen some limited time in the outfield but just saying specifically left really kind of looks like Castillo is the next man down. It probably is the right move. It sounds like a Dumbrowski move. Castillo has progressed about as much as a snail over the past couple of years. Fish or cut bait - might be some more $ out the window.

Maybe Castillo will get traded. Goodness, Ben threw away $72 million on Castillo, $88 million on Pablo (very cheap by the pound), $82 million on Porcello (a #4/5 starter) and $90 Ramirez (a DH in Waiting). That is a lot of wasted dough!

That's a lot of money, Ted. Imagine that we have used that money in good pitching.

We could have a rotation with Scherzer and Price.

Ufff it would have been spectacular. Hopefully DD somehow finds the way to put for once and for all soon a great pitching staff. Ben left a disaster in this regard.

Two of the three at most. And if they re-sign Lester, I doubt either Price or Scherzer ends up here anyways. Let's be realistic plz.

What's the point in that?

But Ted it's not your money! Relax!!!

Seriously, for all the "I don't care, it's not my money" arguments that I hear, there sure is a lot of griping when it comes to money that was spent in a way that you don't agree with.

Exactly. So we can look at it this way. Ben did us all a favor by allowing us to get Price. ;-)

Ben did not leave a disaster. Ben left this team in very good long term shape.

For the record, Hanley and Porcello could wind up being worth their contract (Porcello's extension hasn't even started yet). Castillo and Panda would take a miracle, but we've seen guys struggle and come back before.

UN?, I don't think Castillo is very good. I haven't seen the power. His hit tool is inconsistent. His range is solid, but he's made dumb plays out there showing a general lack of baseball intellect. Merloni said it best the other day. The guy has big league tools, but he looks like an A ball player out there. And if you look like you don't know what you're doing, the manager won't trust you. A 3 way platoon tells me a lot. It tells me that DD told him to keep him on the roster, yet Farrell doesn't trust him enough to even give him regular ABs. Chris Young absolutely murders lefties. The only games Rusney will see is when Holt is needed in the infield va a righty (as Young is otherworldly terrible v righties).

Also, I don't think Hanley could live up to his contract as a 1b. The thing that just boggles my mind is that Hanleys worth was as a SS or 3b. A SS or 3b with an .850 OPS is worth $22 mil a year. A LF or 1b with the same, isn't. So when they went out and got a guy who's immense value was positional, then thrust him into a less positionally prominent spot thereby devaluing him immediately, it made no sense. Then the fact that he bombed out massively at the new position was the icing on the cake

I think Castillo is worth one last try, and let's make the point that $11M is not exactly top producer money these days. It's far less than half of what an all star makes as a starting LF. if Rusney can turn it around and start putting the bat on the ball a little more frequently, he has every chance to be worth $11M. Or he could wind up as an overpaid 4th OF which would be a pity but not the end of the world.

I suspect that we will be looking at a deadline deal for a left fielder. I do not really believe in Castillo. but I do feel he should get a good chance to prove me wrong this April.

What it tells me is that Dombrowski probably told Farrell to get Castillo off the field. Farrell has a track record of playing some of the guys to death in high hopes of great things to come. Most of us realize that at this point we ought to be seeing at least some sort of progress out of Castillo. He has shown none. Not Dombrowki's kind of guy.

Saying "we could have had x and x" in Ted's case is just unfair criticism on Cherington, is what I'm saying.

I think that's unfair criticism to Ted because we could have had x and x if we didn't sign 2 3b's.

I can't think who we would have signed with the same money. I agree that signing both Sandoval and Hanley looked stupid from day 1 though.

Yeah, I think DUMBrowski is pulling a lot of strings atm.

Resign Lester, sign Price.

OK yeah you've sold me. That money could have been used to keep Lester, you're absolutely right.

They were never going to sign Max Scherzer, that's a pipe dream. They realistically could have kept Lester if they didn't lowball him.

Could have and should have. Letting Lester walk over a couple million dollars is probably the single most baffling thing this franchise has done in the John Henry era. It's not like Pedro where the guy was already showing visible signs of slowing down, Lester was still a horse, and is still a horse for the Cubs. Something should have been arranged.

It's probably is:

Lester walking

Crawford signing to play LF

Panda signing a monster deal

I can't think of any other moves that were as confounding to me as the above 3.

#4 is the Mirabelli trade. It used to be undisputed #1, but then the Theo era ended and strange things started happening at Fenway
