I wouldn't displace Buchholz with Kelly yet, given how gawdawful the latter was before going on the DL, and Buch's history of crappy Aprils.

I think we go with Price/Porcello/Wright/Buchholz/Rodriguez once Eddie is ready...stash Kelly in Triple-A on rehab/option and give Buch a chance to right the ship for a few more weeks, at which point we can send him on a mysterious DL trip if he continues to be a liability.

Clay's peripherals are not looking good right now, but he gets a few more starts to try to right the ship before being placed on the DL with a phantom injury. As you mentioned, SSS and his history of bad Aprils are on his side, for now.

Spud, his IQ is 89 and he's pretty excited because he thinks if he gets it to 90 he gets an A

@evandrellich Farrell: "We got to get Clay going. That's a big improvement we can make."

Funny stuff. I hope he doesn't think there's really a pot of gold at the end of that rainbow.

15-10 ... Starters are getting better. Price must be really po'd at himself, but the team bailed him out. Clay is the weak link, obviously. But after tonight, again ... I have a feeling that there are few on the pitching staff that fear putting up poor numbers and not getting baled out. Price I see getting straightened out. Clay not so much. What a pleasure to watch Wright and Porcello do so well. JKelly and ERod are going to put Clay on the shelf. Unless ... he begins to improve immediately.

It's early, but welcome to first place!

I know I've seen a few people wonder about Lincecum and if the Sox had any interest, so I'm posting this. I don't think Lincecum will ever be back.

Lincecum's holding his workout on Friday. I think he's done. The only other pitcher to come back from a similar procedure was Colby Lewis, but otherwise, hip labrum issues are career enders.

I know that it is not the same as being a pitcher, but ARod did come back from it at an advance age. Didn't he have both hips done?

A-Rod had both, I think Timmy only had one.

How is O'Sullivan a better option than Owens?

Owens posted a 2.11 WHIP in his 3 starts so he didn't exactly set the bar sky-high.

Owens might have better stuff and more potential, but you can't have a guy in the big leagues walking a guy an inning. He will get crushed and O'Sullivan has pitched in the big leagues before. He's an up/down depth guy for this precise reason and will not be here long. If something happens to where we need SOS for a prolonged period of time I'd bet we make a move for a starter.

For startes, O'Sullivan throws strikes.

This is all that is required for a 5th starter. Just try to keep the team in the game.

Yup, the A's finally got to him, but he did a good job last night.

i'm not sure which way to read into this but until the 6th he got at the very least the leadoff batter of every inning out.

1st: 2 outs / hit

2nd: out / hit

3rd: 2 outs / hit

4th: out / hit

5th: 2 outs / hit

6h: hit

He did do a good job. He gave up a bunch of weak singles but looked in control all of the time. He tired in the 6th and got a little spanked.

I almost added that he must have tired.

But, how does someone that big get tired after 5 innings?

Farrell stressed there will be competition between the players already in the rotation, and the one’s coming back to earn spots in the five-man rotation.

“I think if there is one theme through the first 33 games, it’s been competition,” he said. “Internal competition is a really healthy thing and we’re obviously encouraging it.”

I know Owens and Johnson haven't shown much yet, but I'd go with potential over AA starter any day of the week. Thumbs down from me.

Maybe.

But, potential has to progress to results sooner, rather than later.

There's no big rush, at the moment, but an injury or two could change that.

I can see it - but I am not sure how much Owens was getting out of not throwing strikes and making old Dice-K starts look like Greg Maddux ones.

Sullivan got spanked again. There has to be a better option.

How serious are they about this season, because it will take a trade to get better. I don't trust E-Rod to come in and be lights out consistently.

I'm not seeing tha guy out there in trade that's going to turn this rotation around all by himself.

E-Rod and Wright are the key to the rotation down the stretch at the moment. I still fully expect Price to have the numbers by the deadline, if those two can fall in behind Porcello, then our rotation is very solid 1 through 4. If they can't, we will have to pull the trigger, but probably (and this may infuriate some people) not go balls deep for a top of the rotation guy. The best I see is them moving for an Ervin Santana type -- durably adequate, in other words.
