I agree that it will be a Phillies pitcher. I just think (hope?) it will be a healthy Lee instead of Hamels. I do think they get a pitcher either way though.

UN? What do you give up for a healthy Cliff Lee or Cole Hamels? Lee has only 2015 guaranteed but has a whopping $37.5 mil guaranteed on the books. I know they say he has a buyout and what have you, but the way his contract is actually built, he has a 1 yr $37.5 million dollar contract with a $15 million option for 2016.

Kimmi, for those who haven't complained about the Sox not getting two solid starters along with what they got this winter, you're right.....They have no right to complain if they went along with the program. Those who have complained about not signing these needed pitchers will have every right to gripe, bitch and moan if this thing goes south because they warned about this very questionable move by the front office. I hope none of us have reason to, but if it happens that way there will be a number of us who will and you know one of them.....perhaps two, three or ten.

This is a baseball forum, not an outlet for people to "gripe, bitch and complain". I am unhappy about the fact that they haven't acquired a pitcher, but i don't whine about it because it waters down otherwise enjoyable baseball discussion, which is the reason why we are all here. That's the thing i think you don't quite understand. This isn't a way to incite a war of words though, just letting you see what's the reasoning behind a lot of people's dislike for the bitching. It's not about the FO in and of itself. I don't f***in' know BC or any of the FO, or even the players personally (although i have bumped into Papi and Hanley), but i just don't come here to read ranting, whining diatribes. We can have civil discussions where you voice your opinion on what went wrong, where they failed, and what to fix. The rest is just food for flame wars.

I honestly think Amaro holding out for Swihart is reasonable on his end. Right now, you could probably have Cliff Lee if you eat his contract. If he proves he's healthy, you're gonna have to part with something that hurts and eat the entire contract. Hamels is healthy, is a horse, and has been nails when needed, especially in the post season. He is an ace. Lee is an older ace, but he's a big question mark due to age and injury. I am sure you could keep Swihart, but then you'd have to move Betts and/or Owens.

That is an excellent question. But if i'm BC, after already flying over the lux tax would make me a lot less hesitant to take the big hit for Lee this season.

As for what i'd give up, let me put it this way: My only untouchables from MILB are Swihart, Rodriguez, Owens and Devers.

Hamels would require a richer package, but some combination of Marrero, Johnson, JBJ and a far-off guy with high upside like Ball and Chavis. Pick two/three depending on upside for Lee/Hamels. If they're not interested well they can go deal with someone else. All three of the MLB-ready guys solve needs for their current club, as well.

Is this why you complain during the offseason? So that if things go south, you can complain some more and say that you warned us?

Obviously, you think the team is good enough to win the division. I saw your prediction.

If they're good enough to win the division, then there's no need for all of the complaining.

Relentlessly complaining about one thing or another ( when one has no influence ) just make no sense Fred. It compromises whatever else a person has to say and just seems to make those people more wanting of attention and in need of validation.

It's also a supreme bore.

We all know how you feel. Being reminded of how you were "right" does not change what was done and is of no consolation.

No one likes to hear "I told you so" at all. Let alone over and over and over again.

Does anyone remember that I suggested the Sox go get Porcello? Do you remember me saying that I believed the Sox may build a staff with mid-wrung pitchers including Masterson?

I TOLD YOU SO!!!!!!!!!!

I like this list of untouchable minor leaguers. I would like to see them keep Johnson as well but something as to be given to get anything.

Swihart - Rodriguez - Owens - Devers

He's right though. The 'I told you so' wars on message boards are the worst.

Add Margot and it makes sense. And - Devers and Margot still need to be considered carefully if the right guy appears on the market. Let's put it this way - if the Josh Beckett deal appeared again in 2005, knowing what we knew about Beckett at the time, (25 year old, #1 stuff, some history of #1 performance) guys like Devers and Margot, who are pretty far from MLB consideration might be something I'd have to consider. It'd hurt - but given the mandate to contend every year - it might be something I'd have to mull over.

Devers after all has the best ceiling in the system - but he also has not played any baseball against grownups yet.

Porcello is a solid pitcher, and Miley depends on perspective. So 1.5 out of 2 ain't bad.

I don't know anyone who was excited that Lester left. The question was after Lester, then what? I DO think the answer to that question was answered pretty satisfactorily. The loss of Lester prevents this offseason from being an "A/A+" undoubtedly. But the result overall was a net plus.

I like that he's already preplanning his bitching sessions and that only certain posters can bitch if things go south.

We get it Fred, you're going to complain a lot.

I just think it's weird that he projects them to win the division on one hand, but is holding the gonna bitch like Hell card in the other.

It's all good now, because Fred posted this on the Offseason thread:

Well that means I can't bitch and moan now that I've made that prediction. I wanted to be the first one to do it but just couldn't bring myself to do it, so my pal Elk set the tone. And if they go South, I've changed my mind.....I won't bitch and moan........just tell everyone how disappointed I am. Then we'll all be. Now get over your shock.

Carved in stone.

Tell it to our friend mvp. He still seems to have trouble comprehending what I post. Earth to mvp.....I said I would NOT bitch and moan now that I have predicted an AL East title for the Red Sox. Comprende now?????

The Sox battle the Jays and O's most of the season for the division lead.

The Yankees with make a run but fall short of a WC.

Sox win the division, The Jays get a WC. The Rays bring up the rear.

What do I get if I'm right?

We'll see about that friendo.

Here's something mvp that does worry me a little. I know you know about all the cold and snow you're getting in Massachusetts, right? There's more to come I'm told on Wednesday and it looks like it's not going to let up any time soon. If this cold weather carries into April it could impact some of our hitters. Keep in mind that Bogaerts, Castillo, Ramirez, Sandoval, Vasquez, and even the Flyin Hawaiian are either Latin, West Indian or warm weather people. Would it take them an inordinate amount of time to get their bats warmed up before it gets warm in Boston? Sure, I could be worrying about something that might not be a worry at all but it is still a possibility and with our average pitching staff as it stands right now it stands to reason that our offense has to start clicking just about when the season opens. I see it as a potential concern. What say you?

Not trying to diss on Fred, but it is something I'll have to see to believe.

I believe he has every intention of not complaining, but whether he can actually do it or not is another story.

I like it.

The Sox winning the division and the Yankees not making the playoffs - what could be better than that?

I'll bitch and moan about whatever I damn well please, whenever I damn well please. LOL!! It is my right as an American on the internet. ;) And it is the right of everyone else, even non-US citizens, to ignore me or disagree with me. My wife isn't going to listen to me about the Red Sox, so I need an outlet. Posting my thoughts doesn't take up anyone's time unless they consent to reading my posts. If they consent, then buyer beware. Don't get mad at me for subjecting yourself to my musings.

The weather here can change on a dime. Just because we got a blizzard today, doesn't imply that April will be any colder thanit usually is. My guess is that it'll be cool and damp like always. May will be nicer and June will be a mixed bag. Hitting always takes a bit longer to heat up for us. Might be nice to help get the pitchers off on a good track though?

At the end of the season, 2 trophies will be given out for predictions. One for accuracy and one for ... lack thereof.

Your fates may rest in Wade Miley's hands. At least its not Stephen Drew's hands.

Interesting that many of the 'over-under' odds being set by the gamblers have the Sox finishing first.... An example: Sox 86, Orioles 84.5, Blue Jays 83.5, Yankees 80, Rays 77.5. Yeah, these are calculated to win money for the casinos but still. I haven't spent a lot of time analyzing the rosters of the other contenders in the division but I know that if Tanaka and Pineda don't pitch well for the Yankees, they are toast. I think the Sox have a bigger margin for error than that. Toronto worries me more than the O's or Yankees. I can see either the Sox or Jays winning the division, and I think this will be the most competitive division (notice I didn't say 'best') in the AL. But just to get off the fence, I will go - Sox, Jays, Orioles, Yankees, Rays. To get in the play-offs, we'll have to win the division. No WC from the East.
