We thought that it was going to be a jumping off of a bridge year.

It ain't over yet. but so far, so good. Depth helps, but the pitching has to hold up. This is close to a .500 team the last 50 games or so.

Somehow they still have the best record in the AL right now too

So far so good---the 201 Red Sox do seem to be a resilient bunch but I think instead of what Cherington has done or hasn't done, I think we should look into what he might do or have to do by the trading deadline. From where I sit, we are getting a little thin in the bullpen. Bailey's recent meltdowns has put a lot of pressure on those like Koji and Taz to pitch more. A more consistent Miller going forward and a prayer that Bailey might right himself would do a lot to ease the strain. I'm beginning to think that Cherington might actually opt to get bullpen help at the TD.

There have been a few bloggers talking about a trade for Cliff Lee, and who wouldn't want that guy---except for the price tag. It would cost us at least three good prospects and we'd have to take on a lot of salary. I still like Matt Garza for a short rental with potential for a better contract next year. At least it wouldn't cost us an arm and leg as Lee would. As for relievers, I'm open. Who's out there?

Not sure what thread to put this post in. But since the Pedey deal news has firmed up (7 years, 100k) doesn't it sound like Pedey has done something like we often credit Brady for doing with the Pats...meaning has left some money on the table for the Sox to use...maybe to be more aggressive on Ells. maybe something else.

At less than 15M a year the deal seems pretty team friendly. But this probably makes him close to the highest paid 2B in the league I would think(until Cano gets his deal). 2B overall just don't normally get the huge money deals. But yes I agree he looks to have left some money on the table(reasonable to think he might have gotten a 5/100 offer on the FA market) thus helping the team by giving it more money to use on other players.

No it wouldn't, because he'll play out the rest of his current contract before the extension kicks in, so by the time he starts seeing the money from the extension Cano will have signed.

I would imagine the front office is on the fence right now. How can they call this a bridge year when they are in first place? That's the objective. So the objective is here. What does that mean in terms of improving the team right now to win? We'll see in the next few days. My guess is they were close to trading for Garza, and the Cubs held up the Ranger deal until just after the Andrews prognosis on Buchholz was announced. So does that mean they are going after Peavy?

The question still boils down do we improve right now or sit on the prospects for the future? Stay with the plan?Leading the division, it seems they are compelled to do whatever it takes to stay on top. That could mean modifying the plan.

Do they think they can get by with the likes of Workman et al? Can they afford Peavy's contract?

I have a feeling they haven't decided yet.

Peavey's money is ridiculous. Just the kind of money for just the kind of player that the Sox should stay away from.

In fact I have not at all bought the idea that Buch prompted the second opinion. The Sox prompted that because they had just had enough and needed to be able to make a decision based on facts, not Buch's nightmares. The Sox pushed for it and pushed Buch right into an actual schedule for his return as soon as he got back from Dr. Andrews. So, in part I think positive news on Buch pushes the Sox away from the table on Peavey if they were ever at the table in the first place.

Peavy's money is far from crippling. He had one of the best years of his career last year and only has 1 year left at $14 million. He won't hit his player option for 2015 due to his injury early this year (which was not an elbow or shoulder). Depending on the price in prospects I'd love to see the Sox add him at the deadline.

Jung, please stop making stuff up about the Buchholz issue. Zero reports said anything about Buchholz being sore from inactivity, yet you claimed that's what Dr. Andrews said. Now you're speculating about who ordered the test, how Buchholz feels mentally, and when the Red Sox would like him to throw again and treating it all as fact.

Can we please just stick to things that are actually reported? This Buchholz situation is confusing enough as it is.

The trouble with Peavy is he is just too much like Dempster. But they almost have to come away with somebody, because their rivals are improving.

If Peavey or less are the only options for a starting pitcher I don't see why the Sox have to make that move. Peavey costs a fortune and the Sox have buckets of guys that are less than a Peavey. Just does not make sense. The only way it would have made sense is if, Buch came back with a report saying he is truly injured with a very good chance that they would get nothing from him for the remainder of the season.

or....

If the Phillies decided they would part with Lee. That would be an overpay worth considering.

Peavy is nothing like Dempster. He is stingy with walks, unlike Dempster 4+/9

His injuries scares me, but I would take Peavy over Dempster any day of the week and twice on Sundays.
