Berkman is one of my favorite players. Having said that, he reminds me alot of Youkilis. Wouldnt Youk be the smarter choice? They both have health issues but Youk is younger and has the Fenway experience.

Only so because it doesn't conform to your surprisingly rose colored picture of Cherington. Just take a good look at some of the stiffs he stuck us with last season and that should speak for itself. If you can't remember the names I can help you---Melancon, Bailey, Padilla, Carpenter, Stewart, Lillibridge, Repko, Valencia, Beato, Ohlendorf, Silva, Thomas. Add them up and you come up with one word----CRAP!!!!!!! Now I'm supposed to have confidence in a guy like that? Sorry. Can't be done.

The test will be up to you and ot her Cherington supporters and acolytes when this off season is done. I know I will stand done if he pleasantly surprises me, but I'm also convinced that some of "Benny's Babes" will be still waxing poetic about the guy. I would hope you're not one of them SCM.

Did you know you can voice your displeasure without being an ass about it?

De La Rosa, Webb, Ross, Sands, Ciriaco, Podsednik, etc. His bullpen was fine. His offense was fine. The rotation sucked.

Our late inning and close bullpen was at the bottom of the league.

If telling it like it is is being an ass then I plead guilty. Coming from you is a little surprising UN because last off season and into the beginning of the regular campaign you were saying things were going to be ok and pretty much taking the party line. I also heard that when things didn't improve and blew the team out of the water y ou disappeared from the board----so I was told. Whether thats true or not, I don't enjoy posting things like I did that you found so offensive. I was personally scarred by what went down last season as were so many Red Sox fans. We cannot afford another miserable off season and regular year as we had this year.

Not much evidence that you learned that skill yet. SBF called it right that you did a disappearing act last summer/fall.

The FO proved to be a failure last year, but it was overlooked in the media--thanks to Bobby Vs big mouth which quickly became the media's focus. This year, the focus will be on the FO, so the heat is on Ben. He's undoubtedly getting plenty of help. One thing they have to do is to resurrect Bard's career, which they damaged foolishly.

I see today Ben is saying they are pursuing Hamilton. Hamilton will be a test of how serious they are to spend. They don't figure to be able to get him for under 5 yrs since Texas apparently has offered him 3 yrs. But some idiot owner is liable to offer 7 yrs or more, and go broke the last few years of the contract. It's foolish to sustain the back end of $20 mil+ per year contracts when these guys are 37+ and on the decline. Look at ARod. Pujols coming sooner or later. Fielder, too.

Funny how you were calling out J_E on being a pompous *******, because you're the definition of one.

Just so you know (and i don't have to prove anything to you) life happened. I followed the team while they sucked, and i was as pissed as everyone else about it, however i: A) Didn't have the time or energy to bitch about it here, and B ) Didn't feel like being a little bitch about it was going to do much else than annoy other people.

You may need a lesson in both that and humility. Grow up. This is a message board for the Boston Red Sox, not your personal complaint department.

86, 03 and 11 were a million times worse than last year. When a team just plain sucks, it's easier to get over. Can't say I've ever been "personally scarred" over a sporting event I was competing in...

Life got in the way of posting on a message board? For shame!

86 and 03 were crushing emotionally because hope got so high and we came so close to the Holy Grail. N evertheless, those seasons had a lot of good baseball and excitement. Last year was just a huge downer from beginning to end, and it had zero good baseball. While I would not use the term "scarred", it was the worst season I had seen in 46 years, and it resulted in something that I did not think I would experience. It ruined my enjoyment of baseball for an entire summer. The season was that horrible.

Ben has been talking about waiting till later in the offseason to grab better value free agents.

I hope he's been seeing the kinds of deals going off the board already-- Scott Baker, Guthrie, Santana, Melky Cabrera, Torri Hunter... the high upside bargain bin guys are the ones being picked up first. I don't think there has been a single unreasonable deal among them either. If there are players he likes, he should make offers.

If they decline, fine, but stop feigning interest in players to make it seem like you're doing something.

I think you are making some good points. There may not be many if any value options left at the end. If there are some, but they are not pitchers, that will not help this team.

As much as '75,'86 and '03 hurt I rather go through that then '12. There was a lot of enjoyable moments in those three seasons because the Sox did a lot of winning. I rather go through another one of those seasons then another '12.

Oh No...here comes the "its early" rational all over again. Yes Ben....its early but when you say its early I hear ....Sox not gonna' do anything until the dregs are left.

I just think they are so gun shy now that regardless of what they "say"....like "we are going to have one of the highest payrolls in baseball"...blah blah blah....at the end of the day they just won't have pulled the trigger on anybody. Then we will hear that everybody just got priced out of the market.

I don't mind the Sox passing on these half injured, half out of surgery, give me till the end of my life at $20M per types but if this starts looking like last year did, then they might not make a single improvement in the starting pitching and that would really be a shame. Frankly I don't think they can replenish is the starting pitching entirely in one off season anyway. However if they don't at least resolve some of it this year, I am not going to be very confident that they can finish the job next year.

Yeah, if Ben doesn't sign somebody soon we're all going to be upset. The dominoes are starting to fall.

Once again, this is not about being upset or irrational as teams overpay players and wipe out their farm systems. It is a matter of quality value players being taken off the board early, as the big names linger-- big names Ben should be avoiding in pursuit of the very value players he is missing out on.

If I had to guess, I would guess that Ben's bosses would be happier to see Ben overpay a little bit for a value signing than overpay a lot for a glamour signing. They have the money to do that without getting hurt that much. I thought not trying to work something out with Cody Ross was an early indication that the Sox were not going to play it that way. I may be entirely off base but they sure have not done much as yet and hearing Ben talk about how early it is suggests to me that he had done next to nothing to this point. Again I could be all wet....who knows.

I'm afraid you're not all wet Jung because Cherington is a risk averse and gutless bum who simply cannot make a decision because of his timidness. This looks like a replay of last off season and we seem to have a number of apologists for the man who apparently forgot of the miserable job he did last off season. I mean why hasn't Cody Ross been signed? He should have been already. We know what he can do and all liked the way he performed this year. We have the money, we need to start doing something NOW!!!!!!! Keep in mind, we are not coming off a drumfire season; we are coming of an unmitigated disaster of one and a sense of urgency is needed very badly and it doesn't seem to be happening. So much for Bunglin' Benny's hit the ground running. The guy is a sad joke.

@PeteAbe: In 2010, #RedSox "won" the offseason with bold, early moves. They failed. Why are so many fans angry with lack of bold, early moves now?

That's basically how I'm feeling too.

I think we all know Luchinno was the man in charge from day 1.

And he is still in charge today.

Why don't you stop using the dictionary and pour some salt

Do you really think Berkman is going to play the OF. No Do you think he is going to take 10 mil to play baseball. He said the only way he doesn't coach at Rice next year is if he is overwhelmed by an offer. Houston is the place he wants to DH. So you can scratch him off the list. Ludwick is a cheaper option than Ross at this point. And I'm expecting Hamilton to sign with the Sox. That leaves Napoli to fill out the 1B. And last but not least you can see the Sox trading Salty and someone for a Vargas or Neise. Or you can see them saying hello to Anibal Sanchez to close out the winter meetings. I rest my case.

This is the kind of thinking that allowed Epstein to get the Sox into the trouble they are in today. Yep, throw the money at Ross. He was .921 home OPS versus .684 away. He also had a significant left-right split as well with a 1.010 OPS vs. lefties and .729 vs. righties.

If they overpay for this guy, they will regret it. He has been a career borderline fourth outfielder. I'd like him back on a one or two year contract, but beyond that is just plain stupid. They have Brentz and Bradley on the horizon. This team needs to show logical thinking and not reactionary stupidity.

I think what got Epstein in trouble was $104 million for Dice k, $80 million for Lackey, $142 million for Crawford. Those were huge busts. Ross is looking for something like 3 years/$24 million. If he got hit by a truck the day after signing, his contract would not come close to being that type of bust.
