I think what got Epstein in trouble was $104 million for Dice k, $80 million for Lackey, $142 million for Crawford. Those were huge busts. Ross is looking for something like 3 years/$24 million. If he got hit by a truck the day after signing, his contract would not come close to being that type of bust.

Who is to say the Sox make all of these sigings and Ross, Ellsbury, Middlebrooks, and Ortiz go down by injury. Or worse one of the new signings.

I am talking about spending money wisely. Investing any amount in a Cody Ross for three years is questionable. He has had a borderline career and is trying to parlay a decent season into a three year contract. Hmmff...I would like him back but not as an answer to building a great team.

A great team is a while off. Ross would not be an unreasonable move, IMO.

Guys, while he may be redundant and sometimes inane, Fred has been pretty spot on the last 1 plus seasons in calling the sox moves what they were, crap.

A lot of us were saying the same s***. No reason to say it twice a day, everyday.

Only so because it doesn't conform to your surprisingly rose colored picture of Cherington. Just take a good look at some of the stiffs he stuck us with last season and that should speak for itself. If you can't remember the names I can help you---Melancon, Bailey, Padilla, Carpenter, Stewart, Lillibridge, Repko, Valencia, Beato, Ohlendorf, Silva, Thomas. Add them up and you come up with one word----CRAP!!!!!!! Now I'm supposed to have confidence in a guy like that? Sorry. Can't be done.

The test will be up to you and ot her Cherington supporters and acolytes when this off season is done. I know I will stand done if he pleasantly surprises me, but I'm also convinced that some of "Benny's Babes" will be still waxing poetic about the guy. I would hope you're not one of them SCM.

What the f*** are you talking about? Who said I supported him?

I am not opposed to Cody Ross, but he is not going to make the Red Sox that much better. If he signs for multi-years elsewhere, I will be okay with that, also. His mediocre past, extreme splits, and defensive play are negative factors. The Red Sox should not be in any hurry to re-sign Cody Ross. He is by no means the key to a better 2013.

Agreed, I don't think Ross makes the Sox that much better. I also don't think he gets anything like 3/$21 from anybody. He is an OK fit for Fenway's LF. There his defensive lapses are not as deadly and of course from home plate, the monster is a welcome sight for Ross.

Now if in fact he was going to sit and stew and wait for somebody to come knocking with 7/$21 in hand then the Sox would not have been able to sign him early anyway. But if they could have made a reasonable offer and if he would have accepted it, he would be a worthwhile member of the Sox for 2-3 years. I am sure we have all noticed that we are a little short of ML OF at the moment.

I had thought that signing Ross early if he could have been had for reasonable money would have provided the Sox with a little protection in the OF at a reasonable cost. But, what the heck....Ben says its early...so why should I worry.......

Ben says he has a plan. I just have this bad feeling that Ben's plan is Ells and two guys we never heard of for the Sox outfield....in fact, it may even be two guys Ben never heard of:D:D

Red Sox add six players to 40-man roster

November 20, 2012 11:41 PM

By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff

The Red Sox added six players to their 40-man roster: righthanders Allen Webster, Steven Wright, and Alex Wilson, catchers Christian Vazquez and Dan Butler, and outfielder Alex Hassan.

Infielder Ivan DeJesus, third baseman Danny Valencia, and righthanders David Carpenter, Sandy Rosario, and Zach Stewart were designated for assignment.

The 40-man roster is now full. Teams had to set their rosters Tuesday in advance of the Rule 5 Draft Dec. 6.

Webster was one of the prospects obtained from the Dodgers in August and is considered a prospective starter. Wilson, who converted to the bullpen last season, profiles as a set-up man.Wright, a knuckleballer, was obtained from Cleveland for Lars Anderson in July.

Vazquez, 22, is a strong defensive catcher. The same is true of Butler.

Hassan was a bit of a surprise given that he hit a modest .256 with limited power (13 doubles, seven home runs in 312 at-bats) for Triple A Pawtucket. But the Milton native has uncanny strike zone discipline. Hassan has a career .391 on-base percentage in the minors.

DeJesus, Valencia, and Stewart had limited action in the majors for the Sox last season. Stewart was hit hard in two starts.

Rosario and Carpenter never played for the Sox. Rosario was claimed off waivers from the Marlins in October. Carpenter was obtained from Toronto for Mike Aviles in the trade tied to compensation for manager John Farrell.

The Sox have 10 days to trade, release, or pass those players through waivers. They have marginal trade value.

A few observations on the roster moves:

• The Sox now have five catchers on the 40-man roster, which is a lot. You have to think that trading Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Ryan Lavarnway is in the works.

GM Ben Cherington said Monday that he would not be averse to sending Lavarnway to Triple A. But with Vazquez ready for Double A and Butler finishing last season at Triple A, that would create a logjam.

• Seems funny that the Sox kept the guy they got for Lars Anderson (Wright) and dumped the guy they got for Kevin Youkilis (Stewart).

• Butler is amazing story. He is an undrafted free agent who was a backup at the University of Arizona. The Sox saw him play at the Cape Cod League and signed him to be a backup at Lowell in 2009. Now he's made it to the 40-man roster.

• One notable omission from the roster is RHP Josh Fields, a reliever who struck out 78 batters in 58.1 innings last season for Portland and Pawtucket. But he is a 27-year-old reliever and the Sox have a fairly deep bullpen. If he is taken in the Rule 5 Draft, it would be a surprise if he stuck with another team all season.

• The Sox also elected not to protect several players they sent to the Arizona Fall League (3B Michael Almanzar, RHP Ryan Pressly, RHP Brock Huntzinger, RHP Pete Ruiz).

• Keep in mind that the roster will change plenty before the start of spring training. The Red Sox have plenty of holes in their lineup and decisions to make regarding their arbitration-eligible players. The moves Tuesday night were made with the Rule 5 Draft in mind.

Wow!! This is wheeling and dealing.

What's the point in bitching about moves to the roster prior to the Rule V draft? If he didn't makes these moves, wouldn't you be ripping him to pieces?

No matter what happens, there is a good sized faction of people on here who would never give him credit anyway. If a smart move is made, it's clearly because of baseball men (snort) like JH and LL. If a move doesn't workout or is simply for filler, it's just another sign of Ben the Boob.

Its almost insufferable at times.

How could somebody be so negative every single day, all day long?

Its a baseball team. Little boys are the ones who should be kicking and screaming about their favorite players being traded and lack of big name moves. Not grown men.

So who would you suggest Spit Ball? Shane Victorino? Johnny Gomes? Ross is better than those two and I don't know what other reasonably priced OF's are left. I do agree with you that we shouldn't overspend on him but here is a guy who hits well in Fenway, hits LHpitchers well and wants to play for the Red Sox. I think what is important is that if Cherington blow the Ross signing we replace him with a better player, not a worse one.

I'm not so sure MVP. I have been one of Ben's biggest critics and I would love to be able to say....HOT DAMN, WHAT A GREAT MOVE BY BEN; DIDN'T THINK HE HAD IT IN HIM BUT BY GOD HE DOES. I also guarantee you if I can say it anyone on this board can.

BTW, have you heard the rumor we're about ready to sign Johnny Gomes? I got a message from a friend to that piece of news.

Of course it was a joke.

Some guys take this board very seriously and personal, I still do not know why.

They just bring personal nastiness. I don't see how that makes things enjoyable for anyone. As we say here in the U.S., they can go f*** themselves. I couldn't care less what they think, but I will return the favor.:D

There's no personal nastiness on here until you called me a douche.

Maybe there will be another great discussion like the one about D.C.'s market. By the way, they went to the post season for the first time since the '30s and they finished 9th out of 16 teams in attendance. It looks like star players and winning didn't help all that much. The last place Rockies and the 101 loss Cubs had better attendance.

You over-reacted and acted like one. Your post that I responded too was nothing but a sarcastic insult from beginning to end in response to a joking post of mine, so knock it off.

I think he was involved in more than 1 brawl with the Red Sox-- one during Spring Training. My recollection is that he is a cheap shot artist.

I remember he won a toughest player in baseball poll a couple of years ago.

Even if I did overreact (I didn't), I didn't throw around any personal insults. I'd tell you to knock it off, but you'd just get offended most likely. :thumbdown:blink::(<_ src="//d1mqtyoopj0gsc.cloudfront.net/emoticons/default_cool.png" alt="B)">:lol:

You admittedly dish the snark most of the time. If that's how you want to be, that's okay, but you need to be prepared to be told to f*** off every so often.
