The team that claims him pays min wage, and the Sox pay the rest.

I have yet to hear when his rehab period ends and way to extend it, if there are any.

If we can get to Sept 1, we can add Story. We can send an infielder down for IKF. We could keep both White and Jones while adding Anthony, but at someone else's expense, and we don't nee 6 OF'ers, even if Roman DH's FT.

It depends. A player can't overstay his rehab assignment, the team has to make a roster move.  They could option him if he has options remaining but they would need Story's consent to do so.  I see zero reason why Trevor would consent to that.  If he did he would have to wait at least 10 days before he could be recalled, the only exception to this would be if someone else got injured and went on the IL; Story could take their place

If they place him on waivers and a team claims him they could be responsible for the contract but any team claiming him is going to want salary relief, likely most of his contract. If they can't work out a deal he is DA'd and the team has 7 days to trade him

If he passes through waivers, and he refuses assignment the club has to release him.

If he is released, and another team claims him the Red Sox are responsible for his entire contract.

I could be off a little bit, but generally I believe this is how it goes.

The most likely scenario is Story remains with Boston.

I believe that is only if he is released, which he would have to pass thru waivers first to do.  Otherwise if a team claims him a trade would likely be worked out. I would imagine in said scenario a team is going to want serious salary relief

Did you see where Tracy said Gasper was the best LHB "in the system under me."

I know that Im rioting if he gets sent down.

Can we just go 5 man bench for a couple days and use AAA pitchers for some innings to get us through.

Note to the Moderators.

This is the type of thread I love......concise, to the point, then move on. This will not be a hundred pager.

I have a suggestion for 'realistic view part I, II, III' threads

Why don't we go to Realistic View April, Realistic View May, etc?

Thanks Bobo52

That's what I had in mind.  If he is on waivers, does the team need to add him to the 26, pending waivers claims (that will never happen)?

I dont think anybody would claim Story (they would absorb his contract, so would that even be a bad thing).  The worst case scenario would be him clearing, declining a minor league assignment, and then signing a min wage deal.

But I mean, hes trevor story and I dont see why he would decline a minor league assignment if hes reasonably assured that if he gets hot , he has a chance to play on the 26 man.  I dont think he wants to go play for a new team at this point.

Unless Breslow botches the conversation and accidentally spits in his face (figuratively), he prob willing to just hang out in the minors for a weekend until rosters expand.  Maybe someone should tell him about BT Smokehouse , a good bbq spot in sturbridge (neighbors worcestor).

But honestly, I dont see why we cant just go with a 5 man bench and send a pitcher down who pitched recently for a couple days.

Or just send down Siegler for a couple days.  Tell Story to buy him a truck for giving up his 26 man roster spot for a couple days and its no big deal to siegler cuz he has options and will be back in a couple days.

You want Story at SS for this series? IKF DFA??

No.  Here are my assumptions....

1. Story is at the max time  he can stay in minors (I could be wrong), and therefore needs to get called up or waived.
2. Siegler, this is an already an option year, and he can go/up down with no consequence
3. We only need to get to 9/1, until we can carry 28 dudes.

Send Siegler down (3 days), bring up Story (if hes out of time).  Sit Story on the bench and work with him with the coaches.  What I want from Story is his postseason experience, professionalism, and leadership.  I also am not ruling out that he gets hot, like he did in the playoffs last year.  People can slump between now and October, people can get hurt.

I would like to keep Story as a weapon for Tracy to use.  Maybe Story gets hot.  Maybe Monasterio goes ice cold and Sogard gets hurt.  But why get rid of Story as an option, when we could send down a RP for 3 days or send down Siegler for 3 days.

If we can keep story down till sept 1, thats what we should prob do.  I was working off someone else hypothesizing that hes out of time and its time to call him up or waive him, and Id rather not waive him because it gives us no salary relief (hes not going to get claimed) and we'll be on the hook for him all next year....ANd the rosters expand in 3 days, so just send someone down instead.

All hot streaks eventually come to an end.

If Adley is ok, they will send Gasper down when Anthony comes back. For Story, they'll send Seigler down. If they bring IKF back, maybe Monasterio?

Gasper and Seigler sent to WOO today.

They probably could have sent a pitcher, and then we add one on Sept 1st, but I understand why they didn't.

White and Jones have no options but have 2-3 arbs left, so I can see why they kept them.

I'd have waited to Sept 1st to call up Story, but maybe Gasper gets added then. He earned a stay.

This could be something as simple as creating a roster based on today's lineup.

Claiming teams assume entire contract.  The scenario you’re talking about is for players that clear waivers and get released…

Yes, my bad. Nobody would have paid him, so I was jumping a step.

Yes, and with an eye towards Sept 1 roster additions.

IKF was talking like it's going to be him. He was better at the plate this weekend.

The intrigue: IKF started at 2B Saturday when Story had his last rehab game at SS. Arias did not play. But yesterday Arias started at 2B, with IKF at SS. That can only be a way to get both reps and be ready at multiple infield positions in case of call-up...

Btw: Romy and KC were a combined 7-for-8 with 3 HRs (2 for Campbell), 7 runs scored and 7 RBIs.

Romy has looked better, with a 3/6 K/W and 2 HRs in his last 8 games.

People talk Gasper and IDK, but yes, someone like Romy has a case, too.

How about Campbell?

Just not enough room at some bottle neck slots.

Maybe too much quantity and not enough quality, but nobody can say Brez has not traded enough. He must be breaking records.

DD made his share and won: Haywood Sullivan dismantled a dream team and lost.

The depth of this red sox team might be its strength.  Individual players stock goes up and down as seasons unfold.  Right now, Contreras is heading to DL, and we have the luxury of replacing him with Gasper as our cleanup hitter (not sure if he will play 1B) while we let Contreras get healthy.

This is one of the reasons why I dont think you chase max efficiency and try to have ultra-defined roles. I like having versatility and coverage and being able to mix and match when guys slump or get hot and need to be worked in or someone gets hurt or someone gets back from injury.

KC is a mirage, until he proves otherwise.  If he makes the 2027 team out of ST, I'll be very happy.

That begs the question, "What is proof?"

I'm not saying this is enough, but the kid was Minor League Player of the Year in 2024, and then this recently....

5-15 w 2 HRs and 2B in last 4 games

.939 since July 1st

.840 August

We dont really need a DH or RF'er, but if Anthony DHs, he could play LF (or Anthony in LF and KC DH.)

I'm not saying I'd call him up tomorrow, but he has decent numbers, recently.

What will it take? .900+ for a year?

Before yesterday, he had a 27/15 K/W with 1 HR in 88 ABs.  I'd need real info before making a decision, like EV, barrel %, etc., but those numbers need to be a lot more compelling.  He's had only glimpses of even being a AAA hitter:

  • 5/6-7/22 -0- HRs and 61 Ks in 154 ABs
  • 7/25-8/30 1 HR and 27 Ks 88 ABs

He's been really, really, really bad this year.

It's not even 1 "really" bad, except for the Ks.

The time frame you call 3 really bads from 7/25 to 8/30 he has a .909 OPS. I'll take 37Ks with a .900 OPS. BTW, he has a .304 BA with 3 HRs and 9 doubles from 7/25 to 8/30 with 27 Ks in 92 ABs and 111 PAs.

Just show consistency through the rest of WooSox season.

Come back for Summer Training next year. There will be no Spring baseball

I said from the start I'm not sure he deserves a call-up, but his .900+ OPS in over 5 weeks is better than Romy's.

Romy has a stronger major history and the quality of the ABs count more than the OPS.  Most of KC's stats derive from one game.  If you want to exclude yesterday's game, then he has 1 HR and 27 Ks in 26 games.  That won't hold up in the pros.
