The Boston Red Sox may have narrowed their focus to one shortstop as Monday's 6 p.m. ET trade deadline approaches, but the price could be their top prospect. The discussion now is whether that is the proper price to pay to upgrade one of the most important positions on the field.

Franklin Arias, Talk Sox's No. 1 prospect who was just recently promoted to play shortstop at Triple-A Worcester, is a big name being bandied about, although there are no discussions under way to acquire an MLB shortstop, Jen McCaffrey and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic wrote in an article posted Saturday.

That same report, citing one MLB executive, said the only way Arias could possibly be included in a deal was for All-Star Washington Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams. Seemingly that would rule out Zack Neto of the Los Angeles Angels, while Otto Lopez of the Miami Marlins has already been crossed off.

The 25-year-old Abrams entered Saturday with a .290/.367/.563 slash line, with that .563 slugging percentage leading the NL. He has 28 homers and 21 doubles and 83 RBIs. All but the doubles are the best numbers of his career.

Abrams is making $4.2 million this season and has two more years of club control.

Arias played second base for the second consecutive game Saturday after having only played the position five times in 75 games at Double-A Portland. Saturday marked Arias' sixth game at Triple-A.

It does seem like Breslow prefers to only make trades with former Sox executives.  Getting Bennett from Toboni, Contreras and Gray from Bloom, and Oviedo from Cherington.

But no one from Hoyer? You know, the Cubs have an absolute glut of infielders and infield prospects that are all blocked for the next 3 seasons.  Matt Shaw, James Triantos and the most Boston-named player in MLB Pedro Ramirez.   And the Cubs DESPERATELY need pitching.  And, yes, all are reportedly available.

Plus no rumors.  It fits Breslow’s under-the-radar approach in multiple ways…

I noticed that too, Maybe Bres forgot to send Hoyer a birthday card or something. lol

And we need to get Pedro Ramirez on the Sox. I don't care what it takes. 😅

We have infielders and infield prospects as well.

This has been my position as well. Glad to know Arias won't be dealt for Neto.

Well, maybe only if we fail to land Abram for Arias plus.

BTV accepts:

Arias & Eyanson

for

Neto, Soriano & Adell

but also...

Arias, Witherspoon, Duran, Phillips and Holobetz for the same 3 guys.

We exchange Duran for the RHB Adell (16 HRs), a 3.29 ERA guy in Soriano plus a throw-in named Neto with 19 HRs and a league leading 151 Ks.

Sox should only deal Arias if they get a player back that will upgrade their team now and in the future. Not sure why the position change at AAA.

Now that they’ve called up Triantos, their prospects are already in MLB…

I have to ask for people in the know.....what would have been the comparable three players in our system for Skubal?

I get it that it's for a 'rental'.

"LOS ANGELES — The Red Sox are known to be looking for a long-term option at shortstop and have been linked to Elly De La Cruz, Otto Lopez, Zach Neto, C.J. Abrams and others ahead of Monday’s deadline. Even if they don’t make a move, they have Trevor Story working toward a return, top prospect Franklin Arias knocking on the door to the majors and Marcelo Mayer still looming as a long-term option."

Tell me again why we are looking for a long-term option at shortstop?

Hopefully it means we’re looking for a LF and it’s a typical Breslow distraction.

Not so easy, but I suppose the package starts with Eyanson…

Franklin Arias.

Id rather see Arias. Focus on pitching and LF…

I’d be ok with that too.

That's a rather large nope from me.

I would say our best comp offer would have would have been Eyanson, Gonzalez and Witherspoon.

#2-3-5 per SoxProspects seems little steep for two months rental. It would be nice to be given a 24 hour window to negotiate a new deal though (Kubal)

You guys and your ridiculous Arias worship crack me up.  Trade him and get real proven talent.  The hype machine knows no limits.  Campbell, Mayer, Anthony...  The promise of tomorrow.  The only guarantees are the sun will come up in the morning and proven talent will help win games.

Well said, and spot on.  I would trade anyone including little a to improve the ball club with a proven player. It’s certainly hasn’t been the suspects that have helped turn this season around.

That is rare nowadays, but the Dodgers do have a 2,500 hour window to work out an extension…

That's not close to what LAD gave.

Or the flip side - what are you fixing?

The Sox are 27-5 in their last 32 games, including 11-0 against teams in first place. They’ve done that with guys named Seigler, Monasterio, Narvaez, etc playing every day.  They’re 12-1 with Cheng and Seigler starting at SS and 2b.

Why bring someone like Abrams into the mix? It’s not broken.

Also it’s beyond silly to make Arias expendable because Campbell didn’t make an immediate impact

I'll bite:

.925 OPS, 28 HRs and league leading 85 RBIs.

Seigler and Monasterio can still play quite a bit. Durbin needs a day off, too.

Abrams could even DH some.

I'm not betting on 2B and SS being fixed for life.

I think it's close. It's kinda tricky to say because we don't have guys that closely ranked. But my thinking is we match 2 top 50 guys and 2 50-100 guys. Their guys are both better by about 20 slots, so we include Witherspoon who is waay better than the 3rd piece they included. My offer is a little less top heavy, but imo 3 better guys as a whole. What is your comp?

I am not entirely against trading him, but not for some overrated guy just for the sake of it. I have said I would include him for Abrams. But trading him for Neto when Monasterio is literally out-playing him this season would be sheer stupidity.
