Eaton has speed and can play OF, unlike many on the 9 middle infielders list. IMO, that's not enough to keep him over Casas and his upside offense potential.

He has speed, can play OF and is healthy. Casas has nothing at the moment. He has ZERO tools left. Eaton is only getting cut because he has no options remaining.

La Sorsa

Gasper

Gamboa

B Harris

J Jones

Kelly

Eaton

1 from Sogard or Cheng

1 from Samaniego or Rivera

We can/may also trade Duran or White, Story, Yoshida or a pitcher from Houck, Crawford or Oviedo or even Romy.

That's over 10 guys. Maybe some have better value than Casas, but some could be traded for different values, and maybe a 2 or 3 for 1 deal.

If Story is on the 40, we don't need all those infielders over Casas. While DH has depth, 1B does not- only Romy & Mead. Middle IF'ers are numerous: Story, Arias will be added, Mead, Monasterio, Seigler, Romy, Sogard, Sogard, Eaton. 9 guys for 2 slots?

You'd get rid of Cheng or Rivera over Tristan Casas? Eduardo Rivera is probably a top 20 prospect in the system. He can actually pitch for the team and has upside. You were crowing all season long about how they had to call up Cheng and how great he was.

Do you really you only believe you need 2 MIFers? Eaton is and OFer. Mead is probably a DH next year.

How many DH's do you need? Masa, Jones, Mead, Casas...

Casas will never play 1b for the Boston Red Sox again. Not one inning.

Casas has upside. Not everybody lives in just the here and now.

Casas can be sent to Worcester.  After this year, Eaton cannot…

Yes, of course the options matter.

My personal reason for keeping Casas is that he might hit 40 HRs someday and rates to have a .350+ OBP, if he every gets to play.

He sucks on D.

He strikes out a lot, many called. That bugs some people.

Give me a .340 OBP and 30 HRs, and you make my 26 not my 40.

And they might bring him back.  But likely not after offering him arbitration.

There may or may not be a Rule 5 draft next year, but there are probably 5 Rule 5 eligible guys I keep over Casas..  Breslow might not have 5, however…

I can't even begin to imagine how much he regrets not listening the Sox's extension offer.

Is he trying to break the chris sale injury records ?

We have way different views of speculative and upside values.

I look at our Rule 5 and think we may not protect anybody. Let's assume we cut loose these 5, so we can add back the 8 IL guys:

La Sorsa, Gasper, Gamboa, Harris & Jones. Anybody we Rule 5 protect has to be better than...

Kelly, Samaniego or Rivera

Eaton, Cheng or Sogard

This assumes we don't finally trade one of these guys for a non 40 man prospect: Duran or White, Campbell, Story & Yoshida.

These are the best 5 Rule 5 players I could find:

1. Brannon

2. Jo Garcia

3. Romero

4. J Paez

5. Wehunt, Ward, B Rodgers, Ronny Hernandez, Song

I'd keep Casas and and maybe everyone but one middle infielder and pitcher listed above over these Rule 5 guys.

I'd also look for trading some of the deadweight guys, and not just to make room for FA signings, but because they are deadweight. I guess one could view a guy who never plays as deadweight, but I see Casas as having much more upside potential than Story, Duran, Yoshida and perhaps others. We may decide to trade Mr Yips Bello or Mr. long contract Campbell.

I just don't see roster issues this winter. We could sign 3 free agents and easily make room for them and 3 Rule 5's.  Brez is a winter wheeler and dealer. Did we miss these 1 for 1 traded guys- some were not quite Rule 5 eligible, but some were or were on the 40? Bernardino (Ward)/ Murphy (Ro Hernandez)/ Guerrero (Tr Gray)/ Grissom (I Jackson)/ Perales (Bennett)

The one prospect for 40 man was Reimer for Rule 5 guy Watson.

Plus multi player deals:

Fitts (w Clarke & Galle) for Gray

Dobbins (w Fajardo & Aita) for Contreras

Harrison, Drohan & DHam for Durbin, Monasterio & Seigler

Jh Garcia (w Travieso for Oviedo, Samaniego & Guzman

Hicks, Sandlin + 2 PTBNL for Ziehl + PTBNL

We also emptied out some of the farm at the deadline. Since Rogers is a FA after 2026, the Rut>Narvaez was a 40 man push for 2027, Mayer>Miller, too and Uberstine>White, the same.

Nope, IMO no impending roster crunch.

They still will not give up on him now. Too much power potential. Yes, he's had injuries but he has until ST next year to get healthy and prove to them that he can either help them or they can trade him. He will not be released.

We have 6 guys on the 40 that were either picked up for free, or cost almost nothing.  Casas has a career .800 OPS.  Casas might be traded cheap, but he is not being released to keep players on the waiver wire.

More than 6...

Romy, Cheng & Gasper (waivers)

Whitlock & Slaten (Rule 5)

Guerrero, Gamboa, Rivera, Kelly & Eaton (minor league FA)

Position players-Rutschman, Contreras, Mead, Arias, Durbin, Anthony, Ceddanne, Abreu, Yoshida

Bench-Wong, Duran, Monasterio, Story

Rotation-Crochet, Suarez, Tolle, Bennett, Bello,

BP-Chapman, Whitlock, Slaten, Weissert, Guererro, Miller, Moran, Oviedo

Other 14 slots-Samaniego, Kelly, Gamboa, Rivera, Cheng, KC, Gaspar + 8

Even with the Rule 5 guys, I see no way we find 8 other guys more valuable than Casas.

I meant 6 fringy guys.  Some of these guys could be put on waivers and not claimed, as many of them were put on waivers.

How many parts of his body has Casas injured while rehabbing the original knee ininjury?

4 parts of just the knee alone.

Pulling his chin muscle really got to me.
