Early looked really poised.  11 strikeouts tying Don Aase for most by a rookie in debut.  5 scoreless.  We traded Aase away the next year to the Angels for Jerry Remy.

Well, the Sox won't be trading Early for Jerry Remy.

Sox are 0.5 GB the 6th best record in MLB (LAD)

-1.5 from 5th best (CHC)

-2.5 from 4th (DET)

-3.0 from 3rd (TOR)

16 games to go (some have 17-18 to go.)

The A's manager feels the Sox will go deep in the PO's. Hope he's right.

This season would have been even more interesting if we had remained even a little more healthy or if Breslow had done his job at the TD.

Seattle's GM supposedly did his job and look where they are. You should add some tracks to your mind.

Trivia time:

What major league ballplayer had the shortest name?

Hint: 5 letters total in his first and last names.

My first guess would be Mel Ott, but that's 6 letters.

The A's must have pulled inspiration from our worst kind of offensive performances this year: 13 Ks, 1 for 10 with RISP, and the 1 hit didnt score a run.

Great night for Early. I was always surprised that SoxProspects were lower on him than the other guys. He seemed to have all the tools fly through MiLB and have a shot as a back end guy somewhere (5 pitches, 4 above average pitches, lefty, good frame). Once he added a little velo, he reached that next level. Not sure he'll be this dominant going forward, but it's nice to dream on the ceiling.

Looks-wise Early has a bit of a resemblance to a young Kershaw.

I don't know about that. Early on, there was something very special about Kershaw's curve. I saw many of his starts live and the only other curve I remember being in awe of was Barry Zito's. I got to see both of them a bunch.

I just meant looks as in physical appearance.

Real close, sir. It's Ed Ott. He was a catcher for the Pirates during the 70's.

Actually his full name was Nathan Edward Ott.  And he was no relationship to Melvin Thomas Ott.

Word is some other club wanted Early included in a package for a big leaguer at the deadline, and Brez refused.

But I'm not sure what the word is: Minnesota? Pittsburgh? Cleveland? (sure looks like a small market word, though)

Either or -- good job, Craig.

The red sox starting pitching is quickly becoming like the hitters, all lefties
