I think it's the analytics guys. They don't see players as people but as sets of skills they can put in and take out as needed. The money and being nice is supposed to smooth over any hurt feelings.

It's frustrating because I think you need to be able to do both: understand the analytics and see that the players are actual human beings that don't function as 0's and 1's in a program or on a spreadsheet. Cold weather impacts performance. Bad managers impact performance. Not being happy where you live impacts your performance.

Because the $31 mill can be spent elsewhere now.

They aren't going to spend that this year. They spent that on one of the best hitters in MLB. With their history, that money is not going to be wisely spent. You know this. The cost to replace his production? 30M or more!

Story, Sandoval, Crawford, some of the Tommy John surgery pitchers...Sox always choose what's out there over what's here. It's tradition....don't forget the love affair over guys like Rusney Castillo and Yoshida--gotta have them at all costs!!

but Crochet does love telling all to hit his first pitch of the game fastball...that's nice to have for the scouting report.

there are no good guys in this show. Devers was/is a lazy, selfish POS and Henry/Breslow showed his arrogance/idiocy when he got absolutely f***ed in the trade.

And Cora refused to get involved and manage the situation…

Disagree.  Devers did NOT have much trade value.  DH's making $31 million a year for the next 8 years just don't.

It's good sportsmanship.

It depends on what the expectations are, right? If he was on a minimal contract for 8 years, the Sox are getting a crazy return. I just think the Sox could have received more if they waited. How much? I don't know because I don't work in baseball operations. We all know that prices get higher at the deadline. They just wanted him gone sooner than later and had a trade that was good enough.

The trade was most likely never going to be enough to make me happy for sure.

Watch him play 1b in SF.  Not like they have Freddie Freeman there today…

JH, Bailey, Cora and Raffy all played their parts in this mess. I think on here Raffy got more blame than I've seen elsewhere. I think it's because some of our posters age a bit on the mature side.

Yes, we could use more echoes of the Nomar trade. 😉

I believe they announced the signing as 1B/DH. 🫠

Actually that this trade went down when it did does support the theory that Devers asked to be traded.  If this was all about unloading Devers ASAP, should it really have taken a month?

How can you say that without knowing what went on behind the scenes?

I think Cora probably felt a little betrayed by Raffy's non-hustle.

When did Cora ever bad-mouth Devers or anything like that?

He said there was no hustle issue.

Do you think trades get done in 5 minutes the way they do in the movies?

Which can easily be characterized as covering for his player.  If anything Cora seems to have gone out of his way to put a good light on Devers throughout all this.

This is the Red Sox brass quote to media:

"We have a responsibility to our fans to put out the best product possible in order to win, but in order to do this, we have to make sure that our owner is happy. So when when one of our employees is not a "team player," and when we are alerted also of a possibility to find a Premier League available to help our owner's other club, we must act on it. In the end, we know we are making our fanbase happy and that's also why we keep raising prices. While we have your attention, we have added a new Purple People Eaters jersey for Thursday home games. They are already available on our Sox website. We have new Roman Anthony jerseys too!! Go Sox!"

Two players that went to making the team better. The Red Sox will be worse off for this deal. Hicks is a relief profile going forward. The other 3 may not have MLB impact in the future.
