Wilyer is having himself a day.

Why didn't the Rangers bring in a left-hander to face Wilyer Abreu with the game on the line?

Perhaps because Hoby Milner, the only lefthanded option in the Texas bullpen, was less effective last year against lefthanded hitters than against righthanded hitters.

Bochy will never work in this business again.  Catastrophic error

Sox still in contention for an undefeated season..  Be sweet to take 3 of 4 in TX to get it rolling.

Agreed, last year we took 2 of 4 at SEA and ended up 7-3 on the opening 10 game road trip of 2024.

(We lost both games in SEA by 1 run.)

Let's get off to a nice start!

Abreau has a great day and destroys that slider and the bullpen was magnificent!!!! Wow!!! The bullpen had a day!!!!!

Good opening day win. Solid pitching, good D for the most part, and Abreu.

Well, I have lived a very virtuous life and therefore had no problems with the mlb.tv broadcast today.

Actually, I despise MLB.TV because they rob us blind by farming games out so you have to pay again, to say nothing of their insane blackout rules.

I'm lucky I came to this game discussion late because I was very unhappy with the top of the order and would have said so endlessly.  Defense definitely looked improved and Abreu had a game he is not likely to forget.  Our pricey starter barely made it through 5 innings, but I give him credit for giving up just 2 runs.  The bullpen was a revelation.

Great start to the season!

That would have been a weird choice. I've watched Milner a lot. If he's not effective against LHB, he's not effective. One year of relief data isn't going to change that (Milner is a funky delivery guy).

That was a good game even before Abreu's 9th inning gamer.

Crochet was clearly outpitched by Eovaldi, who didn't leave his fastball up in the zone every inning, and had a cutter that hugged the knees... but somehow they each gave up two runs apiece.

The biggest difference already is that the Sox infield defense made them look like contenders today.

And Cora listened to me every time he made a pitching change...

Biggest gripe (won't mention the 13 Ks by Boston batters) is that after an entire Spring Training of enjoyable, CLEAN televised games, fricking NESN has to go pollute my screen with that stupid BOX outlining a fake strike zone at the same spot for every batter, whether he's a giraffe or a slug. And as usual, the umps down the lines were brutally inconsistent on check-the-checks. But baseball is back!

Are you kidding?  It was an NESN box?  Foul!

Good comments.

It was an enjoyable game, even before the Abreu laser shot. It was good to see Crochet manage to not let up a bunch of runs, without having his best stuff, today.

We K'd a lot, but we also hit for some hard outs.

The infield defense is night and day better than 2024. Stunning reversal of a big weakness.

I can't contain my enthusiasm for this team, even with Bello, Crawford, Gio, Sandoval and Hendriks on the IL and Mayer & Anthony not even on the 40, yet.

Crochet fastball and cutter avg velo both down 1 mph from last year. Didn't touch 98 tonight. Cutter had more break than average but fastball was much flatter. Good to see whitlock pitching well out of the bullpen again though. Slaten also looked lights out and very composed in the closer role.
