BREAKING: Right-hander Lucas Giolito and the Boston Red Sox are in agreement on a two-year, $38.5 million contract that includes an opt-out after the first season, sources tell ESPN.

Boston lands its first big signing of the winter. The question now is: Will there be more?

#3 type SP. probably better than what we have but hardly a real difference make. better than nothing though

Ok. Finally.

Not my top choice but certainly has potential.

Plus Bellhorn has promised to puke if this happens…

He’s a difference maker over Jacque Jones Opener starts…

if he doesn't, i will. ida rather had Wacha over this guy. at least the fans will get to see lots of home runs when he pitches. won't help us, but it will be exciting for the fans.

I shall not vomit, but it's definitely a reclamation project.

The contract predictions for Lucas Giolito were all over the place.

MLB Trade Rumors had Giolito at two years, $44 million; The Athletic two years, $24 million with opt out after first year; FanGraphs columnist Ben Clemens four years, $60 million; and FanGraphs crowdsource two years, $30 million.

The Red Sox did OK.

I assumed he was pitching through injury last year; otherwise, why would he suddenly suck after three seasons of Cy Young votes?

But I just checked bb-ref and found: '23 ERA 4.88 ... and '22 ERA 4.90.

Not even the Red Sox' vaunted offense the past two years scored enough runs per game to overcome those numbers.

You have officially let me down. Can you at least give me a vomit emoji? I will consider that act keeping you true to your word…

He was pitching through a divorce. Certainly not a physical injury, but it can be tough for some people…

A reclamation project that could go either way, but at least it’s something, but more is needed.

He was absolutely horrendous with the Angels and Guardians, so hopefully we don’t get that version of him…

19m per year for a guy who pitched with a 7 era/fip feels like a lot of money for a reclamation project.

Can we opt out of year 2 if he’s a bust or is the option only for the player?

He pitched a career high 184 innings last year, so at least that’s something.

There is a club buyout.

He had a good year prior to his divorce being made public in July. He stunk afterwards. Maybe he’s had time to work that out this offseason.

184 innings with 41 HR allowed. Good, and bad.

more like the cream of the crap.

That’s how I feel.

I hope to hell I’m wrong.

I’m just sick of signing guys based on the hope the regain what they once had.

Hey, we broke the$10M barrier for a SP! Not the guy I’d do it on.

I would not be too upset, if he ends up as the second best SP we acquire, this winter, but I fear he the best we will add.
