Actually it very likely couldn’t have gotten anything better than the dirt cheap 3 pre-arb years of Grissom…

BTV grades the trade as +5.8 for BOS, for what it’s worth.

It’s not speculation.

I think you grossly underestimate what $27mill gets you in MLB today. It wouldn’t have been enough to sign Reynaldo Lopez.

The following players signed deals under $27mill this year:

Nick Martinez, Kenta Maeda, Tyler Mahle, Frankie Montas, Jack Flaherty, Kyle Gibson.

And a slew of other less impressive names…

I wonder what BTV would have said about the trade. Any idea?

I think AAV plays into the equation, too. Sale’s contract comes off the books in ‘25, so it’s not totally just $27M/1 vs $27M/2 or 3, in theory.

You are right about the total dollar value.

The thing is we may very well not spend even the $10M saved, let alone that $27M suggested deal that could be fantasy.

It’s 100% speculation. Didn’t Gray sign for $25M?🙈 I wasn’t just talking about pitching either, and plus the FACT that more could have been added to that $27M if you really wanted Snell, or Monty. It’s completely lunacy to think $27M wouldn’t, or couldn’t be put to better use.🤭

Dammit. You posted this before I hit send.

$17.1 value for Grissom is pretty damn high!

That’s like Kyle Teel or

winckowski plus Abreu

That would be freakish bad luck. The opposite would be a history-based trend.

You can only act on the trend…

You can speculate on the trend, and you can act on the trend, and after all is said, and done it could be a big, win, win for the Braves.

No.

Gray signed for $75mill. He didn’t sign a one year deal.

The Sox only sent $17mill total to the Braves. Not $17mill per year for X years. (Well, unless X = 1).

As for Monty and Snell, those deals will cost $150-250mill . Not so sure they get that much more appealing at $123-223mill…

It could be, but history says it won’t. As did you when Sale was still on the Sox…

Low risk. High reward for the Braves.

Is that all you got, or the best you can do to keep saying when Sale was on the Sox, which he isn’t anymore. Why make a mountain out of a molehill, or at least try to? We shall see if past history wins out, or a new beginning will create some new history will win out. Now is not the past for Sale, or the Braves.

If Sale just repeats 2023, he’ll likely out WAR Gio.

That's also not an appropriate way to evaluate the trade. That's how much money they're STILL spending in 2024. But if Grissom is a good, how much are they saving over the next 6 years? good, young cost controllable talent is highly valuable. Only time will tell if Breslows process of bringing in these types of players pays off. I like that he's swinging.

There are many different ways to look at the trade, and that is one, and yours is another, and mine is another.

Nobody said Gray signed a one year deal, and I’m very well aware it was for a total of $75M. But if Sale’s $27M is taken off the books this year it’s also gone for good. Keep on thinking the Red Sox couldn’t have put the $27M to better use for next year, and beyond, but I beg to differ.

I was just trying to show who BTV equates to in the Sox system.

I think many would be happy if we traded Sale and $17M for Teel.

Giolito did get CY votes in 19, 20, 21. His season prior to the ASB: 112 Innings, 3.45 ERA, 4.29 xFIP. Expecting Sale to do anything but get hurt is a lot at this point in time.

But those savings are only enough for one year of Gray, whom you brought up. It’s not like the Sox are paying that every year for 3 or 4 years.

And we have no idea if Atlanta (or anyone) would take Sale at all at this point unless money was included. There was one reported offer for him a couple injuries ago and no team has ever been associated with it. That interest might be long gone by now…
