MLB Traderumors projects Verdugo will earn $9.2M.

I don't really care what we get for him.

I think there's better use of that money.

I heard John Henry showed up late at the press conference today. Must have been sailing into a headwind. Now Sam after an exhausting 7 week search can take some much needed time off, after a job well done.

Verdugo to MINN for Farmer (UTIL) and Thielbar (LHRP) works per BTV

I'm thinking we should be the teama giving two for one, but this does make some sense.

I tried to find a MIFer that could field adequately, was RHB and played on a team that possibly needed Verdugo. That they also had a LHRP that worked was pure GM'ing skill on my part!

BTV accepted Dugo for Dubon & Javier, but I doubt the Astros could keep themselves from laughing at that offer. Dubon and Urquidy was accepted, too.

Now with the WS over, the 5 day waiting period commences after which , say November 7-8, Craig Breslow will be on the clock and begin shaping this team to his liking. Let's see what he can do with no real independence of action due to the clogged arteries in the ownership, existing/continuing front office staff and dugout. Good luck , Craig, just don't step on any toes with your pitching spikes on.

Well I think the Twinkies offer makes sense.

I hope he jumps on the toes of opposing GMs.

The Twins exercised their option on Kepler, giving them a LHH right fielder who has fared far better on defensive metrics than Verdugo…

Breslow waited too long! WTH?!?

Breslow likes power arms with stuff (what CBO doesn't).

And stocking up on strikeout pitchers may be the fastest way to improve the defense.

In one winter it may be tough to rearrange an entire outfield, get a new second baseman, and somehow address the two elephants on the infield corners (who happen to be the team's best hitters).

But spending money and/or trade capital on a few lights-out pitchers can be a quick fix; the D can't E if it don't touch the ball!

Don't hold your breath. Nowadays, the beginning of the hot stove is a snore. You won't hear much until January

Historically there’s a lot of action going on before then during the winter meetings.

Regardless I wonder how many free agent signings elsewhere it takes until people start complaining about BresBlow doing nothing.

Brez plan to improve Red Sox defense:

“The ability to generate swings and misses in the strike zone is kind of the time-tested, foolproof recipe for success, because you're not influenced to a great extent by balls in play."

Mission of stat posters: find pitchers who don't pitch to contact. MLB K/9: 1. Strider 13.5, 2. SNELL 11.7... 5. CEASE 10.9; WHIP: 5. BURNES...

Sign Snell, trade for Burnes or Cease... and also sign HADER (13.6 canine).

Looking at the history of GM's don't be shocked if Breslow doesn't go all out, often they get into an organization for a year first. Even DD lived with Farrell for a year before he fired him, and he traded for Kimbrel and Sale after being here 1 and 2 years. then again nothing surprises me nowadays. I'm prepared for anything this offseason.

DD actually lived with Farrell for 2 years.

Trading for Kimbrel was virtually the first thing DD did, as notin will attest.

He traded for Sale after his first year.

Yup, I messed my years up, so he actually did trade for Kimbrel before his first full season here, but Sale came after one year. I expect Breslow to make changes, I just think the team needs something a lot bigger than trading for a closer, even if that closer was elite. The Sox need two elite starters. The circumstances are certainly right for me to be wrong and Breslow to be the exception, it would be pretty exciting if that's the case.

The Red Sox have pretty much told the world they're going to be big players this offseason, and I can't see them not following through on that.

They can't be all talk anymore -- not this winter.

Except for Sam, because that's all he does: "On behalf of the owners who are actually here today but refuse to answer questions lest they get booed at future fanfests and Bruins games, I'd like to introduce our scapegoat for the next four years who's as good as the old one in scrabble, but can also beat the entire front office in cornhole -- righty or lefty -- which proves he is a winner, since all we care about here in last place are championships..."

I think we do, but I've been expecting it for 2 straight winters and been let down. I'm not getting my hopes up on going right up to the second tax line or over it.

They just don't let Henry in front of a microphone because they believe he has foot in mouth disease (aka he says stuff they don't want to be public like "hell yeah we're going to be under the CBT this year" which then get edited out of the NESN broadcast).

Cautiously optimistic? I think they get one really good to great arm and probably another starter of some sort. Not sure what else they do. I just think we need a year off from force feeding the fanbase the buy low options.

This winter is clearly different. They didn't fire Bloom to keep doing Bloom things.

Agreed, but I thought that for 2 winters, now. Did they think Story and Yoshida were shiny enough?

Like Bell, I think adding an ace type is "mandatory," either by signing or trade. I seriously doubt we add a second top pitcher in one winter, but maybe we could, if the long term aspect is not part of the signing, so someone like Morton. (Kershaw will always be a Dodger.)
