With Nola resigning with the Phillies for 172, snell is definitely getting over 200Mil

Of all the big 6, I like…

1. Yama- worth the huge gamble

2. Monty- better deal likely over Nola and Snell.

3. Gray- older but a shorter deal.

Obtani- way too much money

Snell- cost and walks

Nola- gone

Good thing Bloom is gone. Bauer is exactly the kind of player he most favored: someone with just enough off-court issues (injury, legal problems, etc. ...) to allow you to delude yourself he's a bargain.

Every team in the league does that…

Some front office execs are concerned about Snell’s control, and workload, and said Snell might not get a contract as long, or for as much as he might like, so it’ll be interesting to see.

So the RS then just outbid these other teams? Kinda defeats the purpose of going after them, right?

Or, we just choose the squeaky clean crappy player, instead.

Would you go ten years on Yamamoto

Yes. Though I'd expect the winning offer for him to have an opt-out after 5 or 6 years.

No one said every team did it on every player at every opportunity.

Tell you what - name the ethical question mark Bloom acquired at a discount first and we’ll start from there…

Could Valdez be our starting 2b next season?

I mean, he MAY start opening day, but there isn't a big chance he's playing 100+ games. His defense is really bad and he can't hit LHP at all. He doesn't have the versatility to play anywhere but 2B. I think they are going to try to look for a more fulltime option over the offseason.

I was told that if DD wanted to keep him around that he would have signed him to an extension earlier???

@jryanxc96

Jim Bowden of the Athletic states that although Kim might not be available, the Padres may look to sell high on him.

Also says the Sox look like a good suitor and used a package of Houck/Yorke as a possibility.

I think I'd be much more confident if Kim was at 2B going forward.

He was extremely good at shortstop in 2022…

Not sure Cora would be moving Story off of SS for Kim. They would make a great defensive duo though. Put Rafaela in CF as much as possible...

Wasn't that the same year Story was extremely good at second base? Hmmm...

If Mayer isn't traded as part of a package for Burnes and Adames, it would seem easier for Story and his artificial elbow to just supplant himself at 2B now, with Kim the swingman (when Marcelo's time comes).

What is Seattle and Miami doing differently than us in order to develop pitchers???

Flailing miserably throughout the entire regular season for prolonged stretches and accruing numerous good draft picks…

The Seattle draft picks, to be precise:

Logan Gilbert, 14th overall pick in 2018 draft

George Kirby, 20th pick of 2019 draft

Emerson Hancock, 6th pick of 2020 draft

Bryce Miller, 113rd pick of 2021 draft

Bryan Woo, 174th pick of the 2021 draft

Hancock, the highest pick, has made the least MLB impact to date. The Red Sox had the fourth pick in the 2021 draft that produced two likely 2024 Seattle starters. Next July the Red Sox will draft ahead of the Mariners for the third time in four years.

Weren’t Seattle and Miami in the 2023 playoffs. And weren’t we eliminated from the playoffs in August???

Yes, and how did they get there?

Yes, and that is the fruits of their drought. Not like the 2023 draft helped them…

Since, and including, the 2015 draft, the Red Sox have had twice as many Top 10 draft picks as the Seattle Mariners. Compare the first-round draft picks of each franchise:

https://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?team_ID=SEA&draft_round=1&draft_type=junreg&query_type=franch_round

https://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?team_ID=BOS&draft_round=1&draft_type=junreg&query_type=franch_round

Even throwing Seattle's two extra first-round picks in 2023, since 2015 the average Red Sox first-round pick was No. 16 and the average Mariner first-round pick was No. 14.875.

That is because the Sox don’t draft pitchers well.

It’s been going on for years, through different scouts, through different coaches, through different minor league development personnel. It’s not like it all falls on one aspect.

Right now the two best pitchers the Sox have that they drafted are Houck and Crawford, both drafted in 2017. One in the first round, the other in the 17th. That’s not an indication of a solid draft strategy. That almost feels random.

Of course a lot of it has to come from the pitcher himself. That can be hardest thing to fix…

The Seattle Mariners missed the 2023 postseason when their 88 wins were insufficient for a Wild Card slot.

Breslow just read your post and is making a list of the longtime execs who have been twiddling their thumbs trying to grip stitches on pitches he vows to reshape...

... after he reshapes the damn front office!

So, they won only 10 more games than us??

Indeed a disappointing season for the Seattle Mariners.

Over the past three seasons the Mariners were lucky until they were unlucky. Seattle's won/loss record, Pythagorean record and record in one-run games:

2021 90-72, 76-86, 33-19

2022 90-72, 89-73, 34-22

2023 88-74, 91-71, 25-26
