moon is a Kutter hater.

Wrong. I love him in the pen.

I've also said I'd be fine with him as our 4th or 5th starter (over Houck.)

I think Pivetta has the best SP profile out of Pivetta, Houck, Crawford and Whitlock.

My hope was we'd sign 3 SP'ers, so more of these guys would be in the pen- making the pen a top 5 pen in MLB, IMO.

Adding 2 SP'ers would have been fine, but with Sale traded, it's just like adding one.

I thought the sox were two starters away from contention last year. Instead, they are just as backwards now minus their DH and RFer, added an injury prone OF on a pillow contract and subtracted an injury prone pitcher with one who wasn't effective. It seems the sox are treading water at best and fading at worst in a division that is many classes above them in talent. This is shaping up to be a bad year in the Bean and I am not sure why the sox aren't trying to win

I don't disagree, but I do think the Grissom addition could make a big difference on offense and defense. (Yes, he should be a step up on D from our putrid 2B D, last season.)

Losing Turner and Duvall could hurt, a lot, but it will clear room for Duran, Rafaela and Abreu to get more time. That could be good or bad.

Yes, lots of "coulds" on this team.

To me, we needed to add 2-3 SP'ers and we added none. We just subbed Gio for Sale/Paxton (39 GS/200 IP in '23.)

When I say 'to fruition' I mean the time until the pitchers are posting 3-4 WAR seasons in MLB.

It's also not easy to flip a whole organization's pitching prospect scouting, developing and coaching staff, overnight.

They'll sign Clevinger and call it a day. They will then perform John Henry's signature juju rituals for a return to 2019 form for both Giolito and Clevinger.

BTV accepts:

Mayer

Duran

Bleis

Yorke

Wikelman

for

Robert

Cease

Full on White/Red swap meet.

As slav has noted, I have been quoted many times that mediocrity kills in the MLB. You either bottom out and build or go for it if you have the money to do so. The sox do. So this middling ******** is not going to sit well with the fans.

It is important to have a solid base of players that are better than bad, or "mediocre" or better at every position and in depth, but you need to go for quality at enough positions to compete. A team that looks to improve at the 4/5 slots of a rotation will get nowhere, fast.

Without a real pitching rotation, this team has no shot even with an 84 win season.

I agree. It would take a perfect storm of so many things going right, that the odds are very long.

To me, even adding Monty would not be enough to make us solid contenders. It might make us contenders for a WC slot, but we'd still need a lot to go right, and very little to go wrong. We'd need plus health, too.

Cease would be cheap the next two years, but what about after that?

You wouldn’t just be signing Monty for this coming year, but for the future as well.

What a sad winter it would be, if we addressed our biggest need area by subtracting Sale and Paxton with Gio and Clevinger.

It's not even a sure bet those two will outpitch Sale + Paxton in 2024.

Adding Monty would be a surer bet on improvement, but he's 31. Unless the FO is fully committed to winning in 2024, I'd look to add a SP'er who will be improving in 2025 and beyond, not trending downwards.

Per Peter Abraham:

Sox are still engaged with FAs Adam Duvall and Justin Turner.

Might just mean they're still on speaking terms LOL

Or getting married…

If it wasn't for the PR aspect, I'd be greatly in favor of signing Clevinger.

He was my pick above almost all the pitchers already gone, before learning about the DV.

Turner just forces Yoshida to LF and Duran to CF. I'd pass, and I'm a big JT fan.

Duvall is not a bad idea, but only if they view him as a better RF'er than O'Neill. Signing him would also push Duran to CF.

I'm not a fan of Duran in CF.

If we signed either of these guys, then traded Duran or Yoshida (in a package for a SP'er), it would make more sense.

Brez already said no full time DH. I'd take him at his word on that.

It's a good bet those two are likely to pitch more innings than Sale and Paxton.

Not according to Justin Turner unless this is a recent change!

Turner was good as a backup 1B. I'm not sure if he can play anywhere else going forward.

The Red Sox are a small market baseball team now. That’s basically what they’re telling you. And it’s a slap in the face to all the fans who pay the highest ticket prices in baseball.

First reactions as you'd expect.

So Breslow says ownership is "still supportive of assembling a World Series team ...." Well hell, I'm still supportive of winning the lottery, of sleeping with a neighbor of mine, of having my 40-year-old car pass inspection, of tomorrow being 75 degrees and cloudless ...

A lot of us? Isn't that most posters? Is someone not old enough to keep looking over his shoulder for a guy in a hoodie holding a scythe?

Or is that a new CBO who answers a question about competing with a sentence that begins: "But I think the reality is..."
