Yoshida is a Boras client too. If a team makes a big enough offer, Scott will advise his client to jump on it. He doesn't necessarily advocate the waiting game.

People can say whatever they want about Boras, but he’s a very good agent. And that means at times telling his clients “this probably your best offer you should take this”

I’ll be willing to wager anyone $1,000 Yen that Yamamoto signs here.

A thousand Yen converts to $7.04 USD. Your confidence is showing ;)

No. Because the RS could afford Mookie. It's just that JH's wallet was more important.

You do realize Henry has a company (Fenway Sports Group) that handles this and it really doesn’t impact his wallet at all…

I'll take that bet, but only if payment is deferred until 2033. :D

Cohen just called and said, not only would he beat that, he'd bet you a million yen (which he already spent once this weekend, on a good steak and rare bottle of wine).

Every dollar spent by FSG does *ultimately* affect his wallet. He has a very large equity stake, after all.

It’s not the same as pretending “$300mill for Mookie means $300mill less for Henry”..,

Are things so bad you need a deferral for seven dollars?

Yes, folks do tend to oversimplify things a bit when it suits them...

Did anyone ask why the Sox couldn’t afford Mookie when Devers was signed?

No one had to ask, because we all knew the Sox could.

Usually I'm wrong about predictions, but I was never so sure five years ago when I said the Red Sox would soon spend more than they offered Mookie on a less-talented player.

That may have been Raffy -- who we all love and who won another Silver Slugger, but overpressed with runners on base and was just brutal on D. At least he was a legit MLB star.

But a less-proven player? Offering the richest pitcher contract in baseball history -- which some club will soon do -- to a guy who has never thrown a big league pitch? Would even Chaim make that bet?

One of the big issues no one wants to acknowledge any more is Mookie was vocal and adamant about testing free agency. If he was serious about that, how was Dombrowski supposed to sign him? Even his reported demands ($400mill plus) are still not getting topped with any frequency today…

Are there any actual quotes to that effect?

Google away. I recall thinking this guy wants to go.

Certainly his $400mill offer for a contract extension - a number topped only by one player at the time - was not an indication he was going to be easy to work with.

His quotes years later that he would have taken the same money the Dodgers gave him from Boston struck me as horseshit…

If the man was dead set on free agency, he wouldn't have taken that offer from the Dodgers, which has a pretty reasonable AAV of 29 million.

Yamamoto money...

Lou Merloni was the source for the Red Sox offer of $300 mill to Mookie and also Mookie's counter of $400 mill.

Mookie says no $300 mill offer ever happened.

Merloni hasn't said boo since Mookie said that, AFAIK.

If Mookie was fibbing it's pretty strange that no one stepped up to contradict him.

If Yama signs with the Yankees, the Red Sox should save their money.

Snell is too inconsistent and will cost both big bucks and a draft pick; there's got to be a reason the clever Dodgers are out on him.

Montgomery can help any contender, but will he be worth $40M AAV to the AL East doormat?

The rebuilding Red Sox should instead pivot to Imanaga, Stroman, and trade for a starting pitcher they can control into the years when they're actually good again.

Things could get crazy, but I don't think Monty is getting $40M.

If Yama breaks records, like it looks, Monty will want at least $200M. Whether that's for five, six or seven years is up to some rich owner and desperate GM...

The point is, the Red Sox don't have to be that desperate; they're not that close to the World Series.

Mets, Yankees Reportedly Holding Second Meetings With Yoshinobu Yamamoto

The Yam Man had dinner at Cohens house last night. I guess JH was to busy.🤫

I agree that if the Sox don't get Yamamoto they should save their money. I am fine with trading for a young cost controlled starter but want no part of Stroman. we already have 1 cancer addiction this offseason and we don't need another. Add a Bloom type SP or 2 and go with what we have now.

The Sox aren’t getting Yamamoto, but it’s not because of some half as effort; they simply cannot outbid the Mets and for the same reason I can’t outbid Jeff Bezos for something he wants.

You assume the richest people will always pay whatever it takes to get what they want, no matter how much the overpay is.

That is not always true. They didn't get to be rich by overpaying for everything.

I do think Cohen has an upper limit, where he realizes he could spend his money better on 2 players, instead.

Cohen may have a big edge, but it's not a slam dunk.

Yes, and why we signed Sale and Bogey instead of Mookie.

Deferred salary, I mean.

If any player is reluctant, just have the benefits explained to them by Bobby Bonilla…

When you see all the broke professional players out there, today, spreading it out makes a lot of sense.

No gee, I didn't realize that at all! A company? No way! I thought sports owners were all individuals. I would NEVER use the name of an owner as a synecdoche for the team. And hey, did you know that the elipses at the end of your statement are ambiguous?????

He did wait 2 months into a cancelled season to accept an offer. We can pretend the Dodgers waited that long to make an offer, but we both know that’s simply flat out not true…

And worse, due to questionable typing skills, they occasionally end with a comma..,
