Dugy will come back to haunt the Red Sox more than once in those Yankee pinstripes.

Very possible. But I was in the minority that wanted him to stay…

It’s a salary dump in the end. The Sox got Weissert who was about to be DFA’d. Fitts is an ok prospect who’d be a rule V selection. The other guy is a nothing, IMO. Verdugo will fit well in NY. We desperately needed a lefty who can make contact. I’m hoping this isn’t the only add, clearly, but I like Dugo at arb payout over signing Bellinger to a forever deal.

Yes I agree. This was bres-slow clearing 9 million of payroll!

We may never know all the details, but Verdugo obviously had a falling out with Cora. Something like this trade seemed inevitable.

I think vertigo was a locker room cancer and we collected 3 JAGs for him

I'm guessing Brez likes what he sees about one of these guys, or he did not like Dugo, much.

The salary dump makes sense, but Dugo still had a +4.8 value on BTV, despite the 9.2 projected salary. That means they think his skill value is about $15M as a player.

Maybe we can use the $9.2M more wisely, but that remains to be seen.

I’m thinking Cora had a BIG say in Dugy being gone.

Hopefully he has some big ideas on who else can handle RF at Fenway…

According to cots, we went from about $54M to $63M on budget space under the first tax line. $83M to the second line.

We do have a new hole to fill, too, unless we plan on using what we have. That might look like:

LF: Duran/ Refsnyder (Maybe Yoshida when Duran is in CF or RF and we are facing a RHP.)

CF: Rafaela (Abreu/Duran)

RF: Abreu (Refsnyder/Duran)

More likely, we sign Duvall at maybe a $7-9M AAV (1-2 yrs) and go with this...

LF: Duran/Refsnyder

CF: Rafaela/Abreu (one may start the season in AAA)

RF: Duvall

We’ll have to see who ends up in RF, but I’m with you in that I wasn’t all in in trading Dugy, and especially to the Yankees for what they got. Glayber coming back, which was rumored maybe. Dugy would have been in his contract year, and that might have been a good thing to have a good complete year, but like I said I think Cora had a big say in this.

Is there any real evidence of a rift between Cora and Verdugo? Or is this all just dugoWAR b.s.

Benching him was some evidence.

Here's a wild trade suggestion that was actually called a minor overpay by the Sox on BTV:

Mayer, Crawford & Mata

for

Burnes, Yelich, Adames & $55M

(No way would MIL take this, I know.)

Burnes would be our instant ace.

Yelich fill the CF hole. (Rafaela/Abreu/Ref in RF)

Adames at SS

Story to 2B fills the other big hole.

3 of our biggest needs filled in one outlandish trade.

So that's the evidence? Must be thousands of player/manager rifts around the league then. (My idea of a significant rift is, say,, Billy Martin/Reggie or T.Bauer/Francona).

The Mookie trade just keeps better and better

The results may be dragged out longer...

Dugo gone- after giving us an 8.2 bWAR in 4 years. (7.0 fWAR)

Downs gone

Wong still here

+ 3 pitchers from NYY

I just said it is some evidence. I did not claim it proved a rift existed.

Apparently a good week to dump MLB salaries.:)

Was Gleyber Torres at least on the table in trade talks?

Seriously we have barely anything left to speak of in return for an all-star perennial mvp candidate in his prime.

The Verdugo trade looks purely like a "we just want to get rid of this guy" move. You can hardly call 6.3m a salary dump when it's more like peanuts for a starting MLB player. That would place him at #37 salary for an outfielder.

This feels like a get out of Boston Dugo and we'll take whatever sloppy leftevers you'll give us move. We even traded with the Yankees, an in division rival because we wanted to dump him that badly!

So the question remains - what's next?

Do the Red Sox finally bid for/buy the services of ace japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto?

Not a salary dump, but a Verdugo dump (like he dumped on Cora and his teammates, showing up late on game-days).

Good for Breslow, who just opened the door for an outfield acquisition... unless he resigns Duvall. The Sox aren't going with Yoshida-Duran-Abreu, unless they want to finish fifth again.

If not Duvall, I'd prefer Gurriel, for his all-around solid game... but suspect it will be Teoscar Hernandez; the guy is a two-time Silver Slugger.

After that game that Verdugo was late and got benched, Cora said "today we took a step backward as a team" or something like that. When you draw that much attention to an incident, it's a pretty bad sign.

Sounds a bit like a "rift."

He's projected to make about $9M or more in his final arb year in 2024.

That should be enough to sign Duvall (AAV wise) or add that $9M to a final offer for a top SP'er and maybe it seals the deal.

That being said, our 26 man roster looks worse, today than yesterday, but we know moves are yet to be made.
