Gray and Monty are both getting paid a lot more because of their excellent 2023 seasons.

That's why they call 'em contract seasons.

We’ve gone over this many times this offseason, and that may be right, but it’s also, because they are available, and there is a big need. Gray didn’t go from a $10M pitcher to a $25M pitcher, because he is so much better at age 34. Monty had a good stretch run, and postseason more than anything else.

They'll sign late, but one of the musical chairs for those guys won't have the Red Sox logo on it.

No, I wouldn't expect so either.

I'm sure John Henry feels the same way about those two. He's not signing anyone anymore unless the price is just right!

Agree, and I’d be shocked if he thinks the price is right for what either of these two sign for.

No wonder the Giolito contract is the biggest one he's given to a starting pitcher in the last 5 years.

I think he can use trades to get a Bello-type. I think the hype surrounding Bello is a little overblown anyway. He's not a guy I'm extending unless it's for really cheap dollars. I think they can get a few #3's with what they have on the farm without really gutting anything.

Agreed.

BTW, I wasn't really trying to hype Bello by saying nobody in our system is likely to match him. It was more about how bad our system is.

We may get 1 or 2 to match Crawford or Houck, who I failed to mention, before.

I’m still surprised that if the Red Sox aren’t doing much else to improve the team this year that they spent that much on Gio. If he sucks, and the Sox suck again it will be a two year sticker.

It will never be right except at the bottom end and sometimes the squishy middle.

There's a reason Henry was in Moneyball. For forty-one million, you built a playoff team. You lost Damon, Giambi, Isringhausen, Pena and you won more games without them than you did with them.

I think matching Crawford or Houck isn't a very high measuring stick. That should be doable, but ultimately should not be the goal.

Agreed. I think having them as about the best we might expect is scary as hell.

We need an ace every 3-4 years, and a #2 or 3, as well.

He got better, budrick

Imagine a player getting a big bump in pay, because he actually got much better!

Hell, Gio got a big raise for getting worse, and not just for 1 year.

An ace every 3-4 years? That seems like a stretch. I think if they developed one a decade it would be fine. The problem is that they aren't developing anything more than backend starters and a #3 every once in a while. The last time they developed a near ace was Lester almost 20 years ago.

Also, the amounts that players get in arbitration doesn't necessarily reflect what they would get on the free market.

Boras notoriously has his players test free agency. And a lot of them sign very late, too.

I don't expect us to sign Snell or Monty, but it's worth keeping point 2 in mind.

Further to this --

MLBExecutiveBurner

@HotStoveintel

Contracts Boras has landed his mid tier Clients this offseason are flat out impressive

Notables..

Jung-hoo Lee 5-$113M

Manaea 2-$28M

Nick Martinez 2-$26M

Kenta Maeda 2-$28M

Montas 1-$16M

Austin Hedges 1-$4M

If those deals are an indicator, he's gonna land big money on the studs

As an aside - interesting to see the Yankees and Soto not come together on a price.

Maybe Boras is gonna buy the Red Sox?

He'd still be holding out on signing any fee agents deep into Spring Training.

Bel would be looking for a 3rd Bastille to storm.

True.

He also got an arb raise from$7.5M in 2022 to $10.4M in 2023, despite having a down year in '22.

ERA+ 124>81

FIP 3.79>4.06

WHIP 1.10>1.44

That does seem like wishful thinking, but again, my definition of an ace is not as strict as others.

Maybe a solid 1/2 every 4-5 years and another 2/3 or top 4 in the same time frame sound about right?

Some teams seem to churn out a 1/2 every 2-3 years.

Oh, I've got some big plans brewing.

On a Spanish interview Jorge Soler smiled and confirmed that the Red Sox have been in contact and that Miami has not reached out to him.

Jen McCaffrey's answer to a question about us not getting Teoscar today.

Based on conversations I’ve had with people close to the situation, the Red Sox are trying to keep outfield commitments to two years and didn’t want to extend to a third year. In order to add Hernández, they were looking to move another outfielder — Ken Rosenthal and I reported last week they had received offers on Masataka Yoshida — but it appears they ultimately decided not to make any of the moves that would have cleared a spot for Hernandez and he and his agent didn’t want to wait any longer with the Dodgers offer on the table. The shorter commitments the Red Sox are seeking suggest they are expecting to rely heavily on prospects like Roman Anthony and Ceddanne Rafaela in the near future. But wouldn’t you want a veteran like Hernández around to help them ease into the majors? They clearly viewed the situation differently.

You'd think that would still be the case before we get Soler.
