Yamamoto will likely not make his decision till Jan 3 or even the 4th so don't expect much action till then for the Sox

I thought he'd announce by tonight, but who knows.

As long as one team is still saying, "Let me get back to you," he will likely wait it out.

It's also one of the biggest decisions of his life. He may want to ruminate on it a bit.

I don't think he will drag it out unnecessarily. He and his team probably don't want to be seen as holding up the whole offseason either.

I think he will decide before Christmas. We're down to the last few days of torture.

MLB.com reporting the bidding is "about to heat up"...

... so $300 million is what, luke warm? luke skywalker? luke abrasi?

Is it possible that a guy who's never thrown a big league pitch to get the largest contract for a pitcher in history?

Is it possible he won't? If two or three teams are already offering $300M -- and there's six clubs that covet him -- it's going to take the winner to just blow away the field: do I hear $350M?

... and if the owner of that bid isn't Cohen, what's to stop him from just blasting into the realm of $400M?

My guess is he has been thinking about it for a long time, starting before he visited teams. He may have already had a team he wanted to play with and was seeing if someone could talk him out of it. He may have had a list of 2-3 faves, all along. Maybe 1-2 have dropped out of the bidding.

Total guess, but it's probably down to 2 teams, now.

Hopefully not the name of a Robert DeNiro movie. :P

You hear a lot about the Japan leagues being at a level between AAA and MLB. Imagine a AAA pitcher with an ERA of about 1.50 (about what Yamo has had in Japan) over the last 3 years being signed to these numbers.

This guy does really seem like the real deal, but man, what a huge risk a team will be taking.

I think he's worth it, but at what point does it become too much?

One could argue, the bidding is already past that point, but such is the nature of top FA bidding wars.

As near as I can tell , the prevailing wisdom here says that it is all about the money so if he has met with and heard from the interested teams it won’t be long now. Highest bidder wins I guess.

There is certainly risk - but less than I think is being reported. For me the big thing is that you just don't get swings at 25 year old FAs that often. And I think the likelihood of completely crapping out relative to his AAV is not all that high.

I mean, at this point, I’d take even a little throttle

Breslow could throttle over somewhere and maybe get a 2b. Just to appease a grumpy fanbase…

I agree. I think he is worth the risk, but I also know that money spent on him will not be spent on others, later.

We pretty much know JH won't ever have a limitless budget.

But what are the chances of him becoming a $30mill version of Michael Kopech?

MLB commentator Ken Rosenthal names the Red Sox the Dorks of the Week:

At 16:30.

"Pending Dorks of the Week."

Pretty hard to argue, Ken is saying the same things many of has have said.

MLB.com -- the Yankees flagship website -- ran its daily ranking of "teams that need to sign Yamamoto the most"...

... of course, the Yankees were #1, because MLB so wants New York to be good again -- but don't worry; even if he goes anywhere else, the Skanks will still be predicted to win the World Series for the 89th straight offseason, since that's required typing for anyone who works for the league office.

The Red Sox, who only have one sure Minion in their entire starting rotation, were listed as the 6th-most Yamamoto-needy club...

Red Sox don't have to win the offseason, but they have to perform much much better in 2024. And I just don't know how they do that without some roster reconstruction. I think Breslow deserves a year or two to truly assess what type of POBO he can be, but it's not a good look for him and even more so for John Henry at this point if they don't make any big moves this offseason.

John Henry deserves to be booed. Like, someone needs to tweet about his whereabouts 24/7 the same way that kid did to Elon Musk and it needs to be a constant stream of Boos everywhere he goes for life until he grows some balls or sells the team. Ok, maybe that's a little too much. I'm still holding out hope for Yama, and ultimately I won't really complain until the season begins because so much can still happen from here until there. But one can be forgiven for getting a little worried that this teams offseason performance will be flaccid.

Me if the Red Sox get Yama: "I told you, I called it all along, this guy is going to be a BEAST, an ACE!!!!! FULL THROTTLE"

Me if the Yankees get Yama: "pffffft, the dude is like 5'10" and we know those guys don't age well" good luck paying him $30 per year when he's broken down"

Yamamoto is the best case scenario, but Imanaga + Montgomery might cost the same as Yamamoto alone. I mean, they need to do something big, but if they let their offseason hinge on Yamamoto and he signs elsewhere they're f***ed. They should pivot now if they have the money to spend.

To be fair, that would be a very nice consolation prize, especially if you add in a trade for a good RHH 2B. The Sox can hang their hats up and take that to the fans and say that they're working hard to improve the team.

There's obviously still time to have a great offseason, even if they miss out on Yamamoto, but the clock is ticking. As Rosenthal said "put up or shut up"

And you're being pretty gentle about it, Hugh.
