If they stay under the tax line again, there should be pitch forks. The should spend right up to the 2nd CBT threshold. Trade prospects for a starter. Sign Yamamoto no matter what. They are the BOSTON RED SOX.

I agree and have said the same thing.

There is no excuse to not go right up to the second line.

The second line gives us close to $77M to spend AAV. With Sale's deal coming off the books after '24, a couple of longer term deals should be more than acceptable.

If we try to nickel and dime, even $77M, by going with shorter term deals and spreading the wealth over 6-8 new additions, I might still get out the pitch fork.

We need to focus on 3-4 quality players and get over the quantity phase we saw under Bloom. (There was good reason to go quantity in Bloom's early years: our budget was tight, and our 40 man roster and farm had too many holes to name.)

SP1

SP2

2B

C, RF or SP3

If it was up to me, I'd spend $77M AAV on just the top 3 slots I listed. We could even trade for one of the top 4 slots and spend the full $77M on just 3 or spend on 4...

$30M Yamo

$27M Monty

$10M 2B

$10M C, RF, SP3

Yes, I'd rather have Yamamoto and Montgomery plus than Ohtani's contract.

So, you think being over the tax line for more than 3 years is doable?

Once the prospects are ready, the payroll will start to decrease and the reliance on expensive FA's will go down. Possibly try trading Story for payroll relief? Honestly, they need to do something different to show the fans they care. Managing the CBT the way they have hasn't worked so far.

2004: Cashed all their chips in

2007: Used prospect capital to get #2

2013: Most unlikely championship and really feels like the most due to pure luck

2018: Used prospect capital to get #4

We've been in the wilderness ever since. Need to run it back and use prospect capital via trades and promotions to get #5.

So, the window would be for 2 years, then reset? Or, just bite the bullet and pay the mega tax until you get #5?

I can't see how we spend $1.2B and reset in 3 years, unless we trade Story and someone else (Devers or one we just signed?)

According to Rosenthal the. Yankees, and Dodgers have made a trade, which hasn’t been announced yet to clear roster space for the Dodgers to add Ohtani, and Kelly. Great for the Yankees to help the Dodgers out.

Henry is concerned about CBT implications and I wouldn't want to spend 70AAV on what could be a DH only guy.

As a bean-counter I'm looking forward to seeing what the AAV turns out to be with the deferrals. Jeff Passan says:

Ohtani's deal is expected to wind up somewhere in the range of $40 million to $50 million a year.

Dodgers are crafty, man.

The Mets, Dodgers and apparently the Yankees as well have decided to "Don't worry, be happy" when it comes to the tax reset thing.

The Dodgers also got Mookie to defer a bunch.

They are, but someone will pay the full $700M, at some point. (Maybe, the next owner.)

Ohtani is crafty, man.

He was worried about the tax implications of playing in CA and wanted to make sure he wouldn't completely screw over whatever team he played for.

Just read today's Red Sox Beat by MLB.com's Ian Browne about O'Neill... and got Deja Boo.

The following bold-faced excerpts were directly copied and pasted (no keyboard mice were harmed in the process): could be a bargain -- and a low-risk, high-reward one... to be motivated in walk year... needs to stay healthy...

... and those were just comments about me, as a Red Sox fan.

What is it with the Sox and injury-prone bargain basement additions?

IMO, there is no such thing as a low risk/high reward guy. If there's a low risk, it's because there's a low reward.

O'Neill will probably be a 1.5 fWAR guy at best. He is a decent platoon bat and has a fairly decent glove. I'm not sure if anyone has an idea if it'll be ok in Fenway. He's like a more injury prone Renfroe? My guess is that a few years ago he'll be a guy most people forget played on the Sox.

The cost fits into Henry's Excel sheet.

We agree on many things.

Some posters are near sighted.

We will have close to $140M to spend for 2025 assuming all FA for the Sox after next season (ie Martin, etc)are gone and Sox does not pick up Sale' s option.

Why not blow past the tax limit for 2024?

Go spend $140M. We can reset after 2024.

It can be done.

Martin and Jansen won't be coming back. There SHOULD be a youth movement.

I don't get the hesitation to spend (if it actually exists).

.

But me saying we should hold off trading prospects for as long as possible, if ever, elicits criticism from you.

So, the "FULL THROTTLE" is just more sham talk?

I think Werner wants to go FULL THROTTLE. I think Henry is unconvinced.

Posted
If you gave Werner the checkbook, they'd get one of the top starters on the market no matter what IMO.

Does Werner have a company credit card?

[insert oft-repeated Kia Sedona reference here.]

As long as it's not a Kia Rondo. That purchase will work out at first and then ruin your franchise over time.

Kia named a car after Rajon Rondo?!?

I assume it was marketed towards to Road Rage crowd…

It had a special option where it would launch water bottles at pedestrians.

I think lugo is better than kluber or Paxton or any other bargain basement starters we currently have

Lugo was really good last season. I'm not sure if he can replicate it this year. Unfortunately, I'm not sure he's that much of an improvement from Paxton IMO.
