As goofy a stat as OPS can be, at least it's on the right track, because OBP and SLG are both of more importance than BA.

It has its flaws, and it should weigh OBP more than SLG, but it works fine for me.

SLG is way better than BA, alone, and since BBs are valuable- just see how many games we lose due to a leadoff BB, adding OBP makes sense.

That's why I use OBPts+. You get a boost for leadoff BB's.

And you think walking hurts them there?

I don't what big leaguers are thinking with a man on third and less than two outs, but I hope they're not looking for a walk. From watching at least 90% of the Red Sox games the past few years, it certainly at least looked like too many batters weren't shortening up and trying to just slap a grounder to the right side to plate the run... especially with two strikes.

That seems to be one of our issues. I will say, not swinging at balls is a good strategy, so walking is not a bad thing.

Throwing slow junk to Masa is doing him a favor because that's what he saw a lot of when playing in Japan. What he didn't see much of in Japan was 95+mph fastballs. Those are the pitches he has to adjust to. Edited by SPLENDIDSPLINTER

Yeah, neither pitch was over 85 mph. It was slop. He was right to pull it and do some heavy lifting.

However, per Statcast, he has a Run Value of +5 vs 4 Seamers (480 SLG, 13.7 Whiff).

Interesting. I believe at this point that Masa will be a big positive in the SOX line-up going forward. At this time I'm actually more concerned about Casas' progress than I am about Masa.

Me, too.

We've gone too long with subpar 1Bmen.

Last year, they couldn't hit or field.

Yeah, I don't see anything in Casas I would call progress. He seems to me like a poor man's Michael Chavis

He does have an OBP of .368 in his last 9 games (38 PAs,) but that .111 BA (.148 SLG) over that time just ain't gonna cut it.

I'm not sure how much longer we can have such low production from the 1B slot.

If Duran keeps hitting, maybe we move Turner to 1B, Yoshiad to DH and go with Kike, Duran & Ref in CF-LF.

It's pretty early to give up on Casas.

Way too early, but is platooning him or sending him to AAA for a week or two "giving up on him?"

How long a leash does he get?

I like that he is walking more, recently, and it seems like the umps are squeezing the rookie, as they often do, but we do have other players hitting well, right now, and by benching Duran and Ref, are we giving up on them?

Wow. Not even equal to Chavis?!? And after only 170 PA…

You tell me, what's the right sample size?

Trade him for a s***** middle reliever, STAT!

He does look more SUSPECT than prospect at the moment. I could care less how many pitches he sees, or how many balls he fouls off, or how many walks he gets for that matter. Swing the damm bat, and hit the ball, and prove you were worth the hype of so many on here.

Chavis had 18 Hrs in his first season (382 PAs) with a .766 OPS.

He was at .858 with 10 HRs in his first 165 PAs.

A lot depends on who we have to replace him. Right now, a Duran/Ref platoon or even a Duran/Arroyo platoon with Kike sliding between CF and 2B looks to project better offense, but I'm not sure Casas deserves to be sent to AAA, right now. As I pointed out, his OBP has been very good over his last 9 games.

I might sit him vs LHPs for awhile, and think about sending him to AAA by mid May, if he's not showing signs of improving, and the replacements are hitting well.

He looked a lot more promising, last fall.

I am far, far, far from "giving up on him," but we need to win, and I don't think sending a rookie down for a week or two should damage his psyche. If it does, maybe he wasn't meant for the bigs, to begin with.

Much of the "hype" he got, here, was over his plate discipline and high OBP. He has not been helped by umps, who often are tougher on rookies, but he needs to adjust to that and start swinging at borderline pitches more often, but it's a thin line.

You must be thrilled to see Kike and Masa getting hot while you were away.

Always glad to see any Red Sox player get hot, and especially when both are on my fantasy team.
