Groome gone to Padres.

Unexpected.

Hosmer, Max Ferguson, Corey Rosier and cash to Sox.

Any word on how good these two are?

Ferguson and Rosier are both extremely fast, but none of these prospects are seemingly anything to write home about.

Sox added Hosmer for a small amount of money, he's like best possible outcome Shaw, 4 months later.

No idea if he's got a good read on them.

Hosmer for most of his contract paid for and I mean 90% or better is a good move

The 2 prospects are to old for the level there at. Age 23 in A ball don’t cut it

Again if Hosmer can hit a little flip him in the off-season for another chip

I just read Franchy is going back to SD as the player to be blamed sooner. Reportedly, talksox will subsidize a hundred posts to help talkpads kickstart a new thread: Yoko... OH NO!

That’s been confirmed now. Included in the trade are Dalbec, Bradley, a bag of golf balls, and 100 TalkSox posts of the Padre’s choice.

I heard weight issues were a concern

His curve isn’t what it was prior to TJS. His velo on his FB never came back either.

Even SoxProspects, who are typically higher on everyone, were down on him this year. Only person who still like him was moon.

Sounds like more Jeter Downs to me. Runs fast....can't play. Better run fast to the bank to cash the checks kiddies.

Both are in their 1st full year of pro ball and both are in High A right now; we have no idea what they can be.

Odds are they won't amount to much, but that's true of most prospects.

I live in an area with a Class A team; one of the things I like to do at low level minor league games I attend is to figure out the one or two guys on each team who will someday get a cup of coffee in the majors. Not be a star, just get there for a brief time. That's the odds.

On the face of it, these moves seem like treading water. What's the plan?

Let's wait till we know for sure if there's more before anyone tries to answer that.

@JeffPassan

San Diego will be paying down a significant portion of the $44 million or so remaining on Eric Hosmer’s contract, per sources.

Not if Hosmer opts out of his contract which is highly likely

Hosmer has 3 years and $39 million left. Hard to say.

He was paid $20M per up until this option year. So if he options in, he options in at $7M per less than he was being paid.

$13M is closer to what he is actually worth as a player.

Basically the deal comes down to whether Jay Groome is good or not ... the Sox got a couple of prospects of some level of decent and the Padres basically threw in Hosmer (who is an average major league 1B) for free.

I am not hearing great reviews of the prospects that we received.

The Sox did load up on some outfield prospects, giving them, well, some outfield prospects…

What MLB players are worth is a moving target. I would guess he could make at least $17 in free agency. There are 15 players making about $17M this year. There are other players making more than $17 and lots making less. Players will move for as little as a few $100k more per year than they are being offered. Likely Hosmer reneged on the Nationals and decided to approve going to the Sox because of our big market reputation.

You might have been a little late on that call Eric.

Players will go for where they get paid - and then secondary factors (chance to win, nice place to live). Hosmer has not been a 2-win player since 2018. I think this is a good pickup in that the Red Sox had jack squat and now they have an above replacement level body even if he is not good.
