Nice read -thanks for posting it. I wonder how he would answer MY question--"Chaim how do you feel your PLAN is progressing and when do you think the Red Sox will have a TRULY COMPETITIVE team again-not this .500 stuff??

His answer would likely be more about 2024 and beyond, but I really believe he thought and might still think he built a 2023 team that should make the playoffs.

If the rotation keeps going like this, we just might,

Good point, and this shows why some of the stats I used that show he is swinging at out of zone pitches less than his norm may not carry much weight.

Thanks for the deeper dive.

No, they're still important, for context. It's never going to be the same swinging at a fastball in the strike zone than it is a slider or a hammer in the strike zone. That's why tunneling and sequencing are so important. But if a pitcher knows you're going to swing, he's going to give you garbage both in and out of the strike zone.

Yes, that's why I said "don't carry as much weight," and not that the numbers I gave are unimportant.

And you know it’s not always linear. It’s not always easy. We’ve taken a couple haymakers. You know what? We’re probably going to take a couple more. This is baseball. It’s not supposed to be easy. But I want to be clear: We’re going to do this. It’s going to be awesome. And we are going to get there and just want to thank all you for your support and hope it’s a little clearer today.

Bloom needs to run for office. That is a politician's word salad , full of sound and fury signifying nothing. Credit to W.S.

JD has a higher wRC+, but it’s nice to see Turner’s numbers climb a little after this recent hot stretch.

It’s not surprising, as Turner occasionally plays the field…

He’d probably ask what your definition of competitive was…

I think Turner ends up over .830- maybe even .850.

I'm not so sure JD will drop off, like last year.

Being a LEGITAMATE WS contender--NOT a team struggling to play .500 ball and stay OUT of the cellar in the AL East 3 of his 4 years in Boston. Is this clear enough ?
Or, better yet, "What is the definition of is?"

Kind of vague. What’s a “legitimate World Series” contender mean to you in mid-June?

Finishing 4th or 5th every year is "not enough" for any Sox fan. Nobody is happy with it.

We finished last in 3 of 4 years sandwiched around the 2013 Boston Strong season, but we did wina ring and the future looked brighter, so I'm not sure fans were totally T'd off, but they weren't happy, then either.

We may be headed for 3 of 4 seasons again, but only sandwiched around strong run at the ALCS not a WS win, so of course, it's worse.

Some have hope the future looks brighter, but I don't think anyone thinks that's enough. The debate is about what to do about it, and for some, who to blame.

yet somehow people are still believing in Bloom but the number gets smaller by the day

Crazy as it seems, this team could still make the playoffs, and if they do, it will have a big impact on how Bloom is viewed.

The Sox are 35-35. Last year after 70 games, the Phillies were 36-34…

And what were the Sox after 70 games last year? I don't want to bring it up but who is the GM of the Phillies?? And they also have an owner who is not worried about trimming the payroll.

3.5 games has knocked all belief out of you?

The people who still think Bloom has a shot, may or may not be growing, but not giving up is certainly a viable position to hold.

Now, that begs the question: what if we squeak into the playoffs and get knocked off in round one or two?

Again, I'd say, nobody would be happy, but if the younger players are looking good, and the farm looks to be more improved than right now, maybe some will think Bloom deserves one more season. (Even this does not equate to "happiness.")

The last point actually works in Bloom's favor.

Not sure you understood my point.

My point is you can’t say the Sox are not legitimate contenders at 35-35 when a team with a nearly identical record played in the World Series a year ago…

There are so many examples of teams like the Phillies.

BTW, last year the Sox were 6 games into a 7 game win streak and were sitting at 41-31 at the 72 game mark. We then went 9-21 up to the trade deadline. It can go both ways.

The absence of Aaron Judge was no excuse for how poorly the Yankees played this weekend, especially on defense. They were only charged with three errors, but it sure looked like thrice as many, with lackadaisical play paling in contrast to the Red Sox' well-oiled juggernaut. The mediocre Sox are now just two behind in the loss column to the Yanks, who exactly a year ago were the greatest team in the history of 2022.

For those fans who posted last winter that this season would make or break Bloom, depending on whether Boston makes the playoffs: might as well wish and hope and pray the Sox get a wild card, just for entertainment purposes... because either way, Chaim Bloom is going nowhere soon. As Bello, Whitlock, Houck, Duran and Casas continue to progress, the '24 club is bound to improve over '23's .500ish assemblage...

"-- and you know what's coming!"
