NOW there's no excuse. If they don't make a big freaking trade for legitimate starting pitchers who weren't cut by the Rays, then no fans should be buying Sox tickets.

Weeks before he can even start throwing again. Makes not resigning ERod look even worse now. Luckily we got Whacka, and Hill to bridge the gap till he gets back.

Stress fracture in the rib cage? Strange.

Depending on when the date of injury was, it’s usually a 6-8 week process before you can throw again. Stress fractures can be a bit tricky, as they’re mostly due to overuse rather than a specific traumatic injury. And as it’s core, it impedes the ability to do endurance training, which is critical for a pitcher. If this was suffered during a workout right before the lockout lifted then you’re looking at late April when he can pick up a ball again and probably late May before he’s able to pitch for the Sox as a starter. That’s assuming good healing and no relapses.

I imagine this opens a huge door for Houck or Whitlock….

I don't like the idea of making Whitlock a starter. He was dominant releiver and could go mutliple innings. Hes valuable there now with starters being pulled in the 5/6 inning. This has ruined a lot of careers in the past by moving a releiver into a starter.

Not much for free agency to fill this mega-void.

Time to call Dave Forst?

Brett Anderson

JA Happ

Archer

Boyd

Pineda

Greinke

Cueto

LeBlanc

Shoemaker

Davies

Duffy

Cahill

Urena

Smyly

Arrieta

Harvey

Folty

I don't see them going for Greinke.

Maybe Duffy?

The rest of that list is filled with injury concerns, performance concerns and legal concerns.

They're all in various stages of suckitude, or teams that are actually trying to improve -- and not just fill a roster -- will have already signed them.

Why are we discussing ways to just get by? Good, young pitchers are available... for those willing to give up something to get something.

Who aside from guys on the A's?

LOL.

I have Seabold about tied with Winckowski & Crawford. I like Bello more than any of these three, but he may not be ML ready by opening day.

If the pen needs were not so urgent, I'd have Whitlock and Houck ahead of those 4.

I'm not hoping we see Seabold, since it would mean injuries or sucking by a SP'er.

BTW, I'm still waiting for you to explain how he sucked at AAA, last year. He wasn't great, granted, but he was far from sucking.

Reds are selling, and I'd say Marlins have to be open to offers (for the reason Jeter walked).

It appears Bloom is holding onto his prospects very tightly.

It's hard to know if he made any serious offers for all the guys the A's have traded, already, but I've heard no rumors of offers.

Montas, Manaea and Trivino are still there. The A's also have 3 young catchers better than anyone on the Sox. We could maybe grab Andrus for 2B or Piscotty for the OF as salary dumps to lessen the return needed to grab Montas, Manaea, Trivino or a catcher, but I'm not hopeful we make a big trade.

BTW, I already answered that for you. You can scout all the boxscores you'd like, but when actual scouts are saying his velo is down 3-5 mph and that his stuff won't play at a higher level, I have to give preference to that. His actual pitching wasn't as good last year. His results were ok, but that won't amount to much up in BOS.

The Sox have come full circle from Chris "Freakin" Sale to Chris "Fragile" Sale . A pitcher whose power and leverage exceeds his musculoskeletal body's ability to withstand his stress inducing throwing motion.

Okay, I did recall that post, but was he really "horrible?"

Funny. I was just getting ready to post:

From Chris Freakin' Sale

to

Freakin' Chris Sale!

If you are bad enough that the guys on SoxProspects are openly stating their concern for his future, it must have been pretty bad.

He'll be able to rest during all those road trips to TOR when he gets left at home.

Might be quite a few injuries to pitchers in the coming days. . Guys trying to amp up too fast with the short spring training. Sale would be one to do just that. And he is not the most durable guy to begin with.

Casas, Duran and Lugo for Murphy, Manaea, and Andrus…

Casas isn’t going anywhere.

I agree, and what can Dalbec + Duran get us?

Montas and salary dumps like Piscotty and or Andrus?

More likely Manaea & Trivino & a role player.

Cora says Sox are still figuring out who will take Sale’s spot. Houck and Whitlock both being stretched, there are early off-days, so Sox still mapping out plans.

I don’t think Duran, or Downs for that matter are in big demand from other teams, or as highly rated as some on here have them.

Most publications actually rate Duran pretty high. It’s the fans who say “he didn’t set the world on fire in 107 plate appearances!!” who are down on him…

Houck should be a starting pitcher. There is too much of this " third time through the order" business. Not sure about Whitlock . Could he be the closer? Maybe.

The “third time through the order” business has the added benefit of reducing injuries. This is especially important for younger pitchers like Houck where the ability to pitch 150 to 180 IP against MLB hitters is in question…
