New report suggests Mariners are among the favorites to sign OF Seiya Suzuki.

And the GM consensus right now is the Giants get him ahead of the Mariners.

Jan. 27: The consensus among general managers to whom Peter Gammons of The Athletic has spoken is that the Giants are perhaps the favorites to sign Suzuki (Twitter link). Again, it seems difficult to proclaim any concrete favorite when Suzuki has not yet traveled to the U.S. and is still planning multiple in-person meetings, but that bit of informed speculation is nevertheless of some note.

This is per MLB Trade Rumors. I hope the report from Yahoo Japan is more accurate but a west coast team like SF or Seattle makes sense. Ichiro loved Seattle.

It does seem like the majority of Japanese players do sign with teams on the West Coast originally…

Active:

Darvish - TX

Maeda - LAD

Ohtani - LAA

Tsutsugo - TBR

Akiyama - CIN

Sawamura - BOS

Retired (partial list):

Irabu - NYY

Ichirio - SEA

Matsui - NYY

Saito - LAD

Okajima - BOS

Matsuzaka - BOS

Igawa - NYY

Fukudome - CHC

Kuroda - LAD

Uehara - BAL

Tazawa - BOS

Iwakuma - SEA

Masahiro Tanaka - NYY

Kikuchi - SEA

Seems like the most likely destination for a Japanese player would be SEA, LAD, NY or BOS.

Seattle is also close to the North Coast, LA close enough to the South Coast... well, at least the N and S borders. These guys encompass the compass.

I often wonder if the MLB players who go to Japan are more likely to sign with Yomiuri or Chunichi .

Which one did Magnum PI sign with?

I see only 7 of 20 on the west coast.

Of course you left off Kasahiro Sasaki (Sea), Kenjhi Jojima (Sea), Shigetoshi Hasegawa (Anaheim), Hideo Nomo (LAD), Kaz Ishii (LAD).

But then you left out a bunch to play on non-west coast teams, too, like Kaz Matsui (Mets) and Nori Aoki (Brewers).

And when did Kikuchi retire?!?

If the Yomiuri Giants want you, the Yomiuri Giants get you. Why would anyone settle for Chunichi between those two teams. It’s like trying to choose between joining the cast of Saturday Night Live or teaming up with some guy named Dave who has some puppets and works the occasional kid’s birthday party…

I trust Yahoo Japan's rumor a lot more than Peter Gammons talking to anonymous GMs.

Where does the rumor of Yahoo Japan's aggregator rank in relation to the report from Nikkan Sports, the "Japanese sports publication that has been around since the ‘40s boasting a circulation of almost two million"?

Being around for since the 40s and having a circulation of over 2 million doesn't mean anything. Look at all the big city papers like the NY Times and Washington Post. I don't believe anything they write no matter how long they have been in existence and no matter what their circulation is.

Sorry, I was looking at a weird list. Kikuchi wasn't listed as "active" because he's a free agent. I didn't list every player, just ones I thought were notable. Nomo should have been first on the list, so I don't know what happened there.

Feel free to provide a complete list.

Gammons' rumor agrees with Wednesday's report from Japan's Nikkan Sports (which came AFTER the report that jacko posted about).

At least this rumor is news this week... even if it's just filed under Suzuki reportedly showing some interest in Boston.

It's not news, though. News implies "new."

We heard this rumor weeks ago.

This was reported and talked about several weeks ago.

I know we have very little to talk about, but why pretend this is something new?

Well, we didn't; news media outlets reported on it this week.

The only real news is top Red Sox minor league prospects are practicing together. If that's our spring training for awhile, at least we get to see the progress of some guys who may star in the hopefully-near future.

It was reported weeks ago, the Sox were the the "leaders" in signing him.

The Google translation of one paragraph from the Nikkan Sports report dated January 26:

From now on, I will go to the United States as soon as the lockout is released. It is expected that the 15 major teams will hold final negotiations, including a facility tour, in Arizona, where the campsite is located. According to several U.S. baseball players, Makoto Suzuki is expected to have 3-4 teams in the final round as a result of careful narrowing down after negotiations in the first round. At this point, the Mariners, Cubs, Giants, and Padres are expected to remain finalists, with the majority saying that the Red Sox and the Yankees, who were late in the first round, are inferior to those with camp facilities in Florida. is occupying.

I think we should argue grammar and spelling conventions instead. I'll start by noting the EGREGIOUS error above of representing the possessive of Gammons as Gammons' rather than Gammons's. (And people wonder why this world is going to hell).

Agreed. That is some serious egregiousness. (Love that word too.)

The Google translation of speculative analysis in the Nikkan Sports report dated January 26:

◆ Mariners Now off, Dipoto GM enthusiastically loved to say, "I can't think of an opening without Japanese players." Since the main axis, Seger third baseman, retired only last season, Suzuki is expected to be the center pole of the batting line, assuming the conversion of other players.

◆ Cubs: In the middle of last season, the main hitters such as Reso, Bryant, and Baez are being released one after another and are being rebuilt. The fixed position is not fixed in both the inner and outer fields, and it is essential to reinforce the score source, so Suzuki is the top priority target.

◆ Giants: Last season, he won the district championship, and although the player base is substantial, both mid-level and left wing lack power. The acquisition of Suzuki with all three beats is the foundation of the everlasting corps.

◆ Padres Right-wing Myers and all outfielders are above average, but Suzuki is superior in overall strength. Reinforcement is inevitable to become a regular playoff player.
