While I understand his enthusiasm and confidence, does anyone think he makes his MLB debut for his hometown team?

He could make the MLB as a platoon bat. Aside from his reverse split last season, he mashed RHP pretty well in AAA for a few years. He just doesn't have a fit here with Casas in the pipeline. The Phillies don't have an exceptionally deep roster, especially for LHB. If MLB does add the DH, it may clear a little more wiggle room for a guy like Ockimey to fit in somewhere.

@josh_ock

Excited to announce that I’ve signed with the Philadelphia Phillies! Thrilled to have the opportunity to play for the organization of my hometown. Looking forward to this year

He was my "sleeper prospect" from years ago. He has nice platoonable splits.

The problem for Ockimey is he fits the same profile as a 100 other minor league free agents and Philly probably has a few equivalent and incomplete players in their own system that can challenge him for a platoon DH role. Sure he might make it, but I wouldn’t really be all that surprised if it was more of the same for him in Philly…

I wouldn't be surprised if he never makes it. I wouldn't be surprised if he was a role player for a few years. If his glove was better, he'd have a more clear path.

He's probably 50/50 on making an MLB appearance with the Phillies. That's better than what it was for the Sox.

Well, he was unable to make one in Boston when he was only blocked by a displaced third baseman with contact issues…

It made more sense for the Sox to stick it out with Dalbec and have him turn it around after his early season struggles. Seemed like that worked.

Probably also worth noting that if a new CBA ever actually gets done, Philly can make a fairly minor move that drastically reduces those odds for Ockimey, like grabbing Dan Vogelbach or Travis Shaw or Corey Dickerson…

Oh I’m on the very short list of Dalbec supporters, but you have to agree he had some serious stretches where he left the door open for Ockimey. And it’s not like Dalbec’s glove saved him…

Certainly true. Desperate Dave would rather claw to 3rd place than trot out a roster that will get a top pick.

Yes, he left the door open. Sox brass wanted to stick it out with him and it worked out.

And really, shouldn’t every GM act similarly? Tanking for a pick is a joke in MLB that ruins the game for an entire fan base.

Not to mention, most teams are not out of it at the beginning of the year except by choice. When you can put a projected .400 team on the field and the best on your division is a projected .600 team, the decision to stay in it can actually pay off…

It's what they "should" do. It's not what happens in reality.

If you're 20 games out at the deadline, sell everything not nailed down. If you trot out a AAAA roster on 4/1, go to the firing squad.

I get selling off pieces in July. I just don’t like watching the same teams “building” for a draft pick every March..

That’s the type of situation Ockimey may find himself in every year. It could be tougher in Philly, where Rhys Hoskins is a considerable obstacle at 1b, unlike Dalbec…

Hoskins and Bohm. Both are RHB. Both can play 1b. I don't think he's a starter. I think he could sneak onto that roster as a bench bat.

He might only sneak on due to an injury to Hoskins.

Hoskins has been very good. He's got a career .862 OPS (126 OPS+) and averages 37 HRs, 39 2B+3B per 700 PAs. He's a career .843 hitter vs RHPs. He's not a platoon player.

Bohm is a bit unproven and does not have much power for 1B (11 HRs and 26 2Bs per 608 PAs). In 417 PAs vs rHPs, he has a .677 OPS. Ockimey could be a platoon with him.

Astros are the worst organization in professional sports.

For every team that works the system successfully, how many never get there?

Even some of the success stories are short-lived. How many years did it take the Royals to build an elite farm system with, was it 9 players in the BA top 100? And how long was their run?

He might be able to eke in at some point this season if injuries pile up. Of course, he’ll need to be added to the 40 man roster first.

I just don’t this this situation is all that much different from what he had in Boston. So the same results shouldn’t be too surprising of an outcome

2 years.

If they would have paid their players, maybe it could have lasted longer.

86-76 in 2013

89-73 in 2014 (lost WS)

95-67 in 2015 (Champs)

81-81 in 2016

80-82 in 2017

They did add Cueto and Zobrist in 2015, who weren't cheap, at the time.

We really knew the length of their run, but the point is about how many tank years of rebuilding it took to get there. And how many more since to try and get back.

That’s a process many teams go through, and most peak with much less success…

At least we aren't Angels fans today.

@TJQuinnESPN

Harvey says he tried oxycodone in 2019. Got it from Tyler Skaggs. Didn't like how it felt.

Harvey says he shared Percocets with Skaggs. "He had asked me... if I had anything and I think I said I had" either Percocet or oxy at the time.

Harvey: Skaggs asked him for pills before a couple of road trips in June '19. Including one where he said he wanted oxy to feel "loosey goosey" before a start.

Harvey says in June 30 2019, the day the Angels flew to Texas, he found out last minute he wasn't going. Was upset to miss out and hid from other players. Says he discussed getting a blue oxy from Kay, Kay put it in his locker. Didn't take it that day. Next day He woke and heard about Skaggs. Before he heard cause of death, he threw out the blue pill, afraid something would happen to him.

Harvey says he used in clubhouse and dugout. Skaggs told him he crushed and snorted oxy on the toilet paper dispenser in the clubhouse bathroom.

Asking from complete ignorance here: athletes can perform WHILE ON downers or pain-killers? (I assume you can perform high on, say, weed [although personally, I don't trust myself to cross the street], and if old stories are right, on acid too [again, I wouldn't trust myself to pee on the wall]), but oxy? Really? Or are its effects different from garden-variety downers of years past?

I've heard that some people use certain strains of weed to concentrate. Maybe oxy was just used to be less stressed out? IDK. Was never my thing. When I was given a prescription for it, I just gave it away.

Very true.

The Rays have been an exception, without raising spending much for strong run years.

The Astros tanked to get very good, and their stretch is still in progress, but they started spending more.

@AdamRubinMedia

I’ll say this and then stop: The Mets told me a looong time ago, before anything like this was public, that they tried to help him, as did his agent. So they weren’t willfully blind to what was going on because they were getting performance.

Juan Soto turned down a 13-year, $350 million contract from the Washington Nationals before the lockout, according to this @Enrique_Rojas1 report. In the story, Soto confirms the offer.

He did that for the younger players... er, wait -- he's the younger player. So he's probably considering his family; they can't live on $350 mil...

... that would be all his countrymen, one big unhappy family -- the population of the Dominican Republic, approx. 11 million people, divided by $350 million dollars = almost $32 mil each. Over 13 years, that's less than $2 1/2 million per. What man, woman or child can possibly live on only $2.4 mil each per year?

Is that the new math?
